Malaysia win fourth medal in Doha

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia picked up their fourth medal at the Under-18 Asian Junior Championships in Doha after Kho Yek Zhen-Affan Azmi delivered a hard-fought bronze in the boys' doubles on Tuesday. The national team debutants combined for a 12-game total of 2,582 to place third behind a dominant Qatari one-two finish. Talal Al Marri-Masaed Al Muraikhi clinched the gold with 2,690, while Hassan Al Muraikhi-Abdulrahman Al Doseri followed close behind on 2,669. Although they missed out on the title, Yek Zhen-Affan made a strong impression to keep Malaysia's medal momentum going. Malaysia have now won medals in all four events contested thus far, with two golds and two bronzes in the bag. Qurratu'ain Izdihar Pozi has emerged as the standout performer, delivering two golds in the girls' singles and doubles (with Adelia Nur Syazalee), while Aqil Faizal contributed a bronze in the boys' singles. Malaysia will be gunning for more glory in the boys' and girls' team events starting Wednesday. There's also a strong chance of adding two more golds through the All-Events category, with Malaysians currently dominating both standings. In the boys' division, Sayed Abdullah and Wan Muhammad Ikram Wan Mazlan occupy the top two spots with 2,650 and 2,647 pinfalls respectively. In the girls', Qurratu'ain leads with 2,485 ahead of Adelia on 2,391 — putting the former in line for a remarkable third gold in Doha. Team manager Maradona Chok said: "It's been a solid run so far, and I'm proud of how our bowlers have stepped up in every event. "We've hit the podium each time, and that gives us great momentum heading into the team events — which are always seen as the ultimate titles. The players are motivated, and we'll be going all out to keep the medal streak going."
