Video: What you missed at the Durban July — Ezokhetho's chicken-feet chic, luxury cars and Mzansi celebs
As the horses thundered down the track at the Hollywoodbets Durban July, it wasn't just the race that had hearts racing; it was the fashion. This year, Johannesburg-based label Ezokhetho, helmed by the visionary Mpumi Dhlamini, reminded the country why local fashion deserves a place on the global stage. Drawing deep inspiration from the golden age of Sophiatown, Ezokhetho's pieces told stories far beyond fabric. With bold prints, structured silhouettes, and the now-iconic chicken feet motif, the label turned heads and sparked conversations. 'You are your billboard,' says Mpumi. 'Your clothing speaks before you do.' Reimagining Sophiatown Founded in 2017 and headquartered in Victoria Yards, Ezokhetho was born from a desire to honour the spirit of Sophiatown, an era where fashion was a form of protest, and style was a stand. Dhlamini's label revives that spirit for a new generation of wearers who see clothes not just as garments but as vessels of meaning. 'The table' is Ezokhetho's philosophy: a place where everyone is invited to be seen, heard, and styled. It's fashion with a cause, authentic, confrontational, and unapologetically South African. This year's theme, 'Marvelling at the Marvels of Mzansi,' dovetails perfectly with Ezokhetho's ethos. Mpumi's tips for race-day dressing or any other fashion-focused event are not just about standing out, but standing firm in your identity: Prints as memory: From classic florals to striking geometrics, Ezokhetho's prints archive lived experiences. Silhouettes with purpose: Think strong tailoring and deliberate shapes that speak of dignity and presence. Symbols that spark dialogue: The chicken feet motif, a uniquely local and nostalgic reference, appears on everything from streetwear to formal wear. Ageless style: 'Style has no expiry date,' says Mpumi. Whether worn by a Gen Z trendsetter or a stylish elder, Ezokhetho pieces radiate a timeless edge. A legacy on the runway More than just a fashion house, Ezokhetho utilises its runway moments to highlight pressing social issues, such as gender-based violence, poverty, and inequality. Garments feature handwritten notes, illustrations, and messages that demand attention. 'We're not just here for applause,' says Dhlamini. 'We want people to reflect.' OMODA Fashion Show – a high fashion show by the renowned South African fashion house Khosi Nkosi which will showcase their interpretation of 'Marvels of Mzansi. Wear the story For Mpumi Dhlamini, fashion is not just about the fit or the flair; it's about the feeling. 'Dress up, yes. But ask yourself, what story are you telling?' Mpumi asks.

Marvels of Mzansi under starters orders
Luyolo Madlala and Bronwyn Zulu, both wearing Kathrin Kidger outfits with Gladatorian, who is running at 16/1. Gladatorian is trained by Stuart Ferrie and will be ridden by Sean Veale in the Hollywoodbets Durban July on today. Kidger will exhibit as part of the Durban July Invited Designer Showcase. Image: Candiese Lenferna | Race Coast | Gameplan Media Anita Nkonki, Se-Anne Rall and Xolile Mthembu As the anticipation builds for the Hollywoodbets Durban July, this year's affair is expected to showcase a blend of tradition, innovation, and unmissable fashion flair under the theme "Marvels of Mzansi", cementing its status as a highlight on Africa's social calendar. Greyville Racecourse is set to welcome approximately 45 000 people, promising both glamour and economic vitality for the City. Hotel occupancies are estimated at 80%. 'The direct spend is estimated at R278 million, with a total of R700 million contribution to the eThekwini GDP and a total number of 4 000 jobs to be created,' said eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba. This year marks the 128th running of the race, and the event is poised to dazzle both on the turf and in the fashion stakes. Eight of Eighteen is the favourite to take top honours tomorrow. All eyes will be on the three-year-old colt, trained by Justin Snaith and ridden by champion jockey Richard Fourie, as he heads into the R5 million race on the back of some impressive results. Eight of Eighteen, who comes in at 14/10 to win, came out tops at the prestigious Cape Town Met in January, and again at the SplashOut Cape Derby a month later. And for good measure, the young colt was also victorious in the Daily News 2000 in Durban. Oriental Charm, the winner from last year, is expected to give Eight of Eighteen a run for his money, coming in at 6/1, while Immediate Edge is in with a shout at 7/1. In an update, See It Again has been scratched and has been replaced by reserve Litigation. Designers, both professional and amateur, are eager to showcase their talents. The fashion component will feature three official elements: the Durban Fashion Fair Rising Stars, the Durban July Invited Designers Showcase, and the 10 finalists from the Durban July Young Designer competition. Fashion enthusiasts will have the chance to showcase their own attire. Ticket holders can enter categories such as classic race wear for men and women, best dressed couple, and the standout race day hat or fascinator. Cutting-edge automotive manufacturer Omoda has joined the celebration. It is expanding its South African presence with an all-new SUV model called the C7. It's set to be revealed at this year's race, as part of a collaboration with acclaimed fashion house Khosi Nkosi. The new vehicle will be adorned in an artistic wrap created specifically for the event. Punters attending the July will want to pack a little something warm as temperatures are expected between 13°C and 22°C. But the good news is there will be no rain. South African Weather Service forecaster, Wiseman Dlamini, said Saturday's weather is expected to be fine with a light westerly to north-westerly in the morning. "Otherwise it will be a light to moderate easterly to north-easterly wind from late afternoon," Dlamini said.

Omoda C7 here soon: SA details released ahead of glamorous Durban July reveal with Khosi Nkosi
The Omoda C7 will launch in South Africa imminently. Image: Supplied Omoda is expanding its South African presence with an all-new SUV model called the C7. It's set to be revealed at this year's Hollywoodbets Durban July, as part of a collaboration with acclaimed fashion house Khosi Nkosi. The new vehicle will be adorned in an artistic wrap created specifically for the event. The Chinese brand has also revealed some of the local details about its new C7 ahead of the official launch. The Khosi Nkosi collaboration introduces a new creative direction for 2025, called Ndlovukazi. Image: Supplied As its name implies, the newcomer will slot between the popular Omoda C5 and luxurious Omoda C9, and although local pricing has not been announced as yet, it is likely to be priced from around R500,000 upwards, given that the C5 X stretches up to R465,900 and the C9 starts at R785,900. Omoda has confirmed that two engines will be offered locally, with the familiar 1.6-litre turbopetrol engine serving as the entry-level option, with outputs of 145kW and 290Nm. Customers will also be able to opt for an 'SHS' plug-in hybrid model, which pairs a 1.5-litre turbopetrol engine with an electric motor for combined outputs of 255kW and 525Nm. Thanks to an 18.4 kWh battery pack, the C7 SHS boasts an all-electric range of up to 105km between charges, according to claims, and a combined range of 1,200km. When connected to a 40kW fast charger, the battery can be replenished from 30% to 80% in just 20 minutes, Omoda says. The C7 SHS will be fitted with 20-inch alloy wheels, while both models will feature LED headlights, a Sony sound system, leather upholstery, with heating and power-adjustment upfront, as well as 12 advanced driver assistance features. This year's Khosi Nkosi collaboration introduces a new creative direction called Ndlovukazi, which draws inspiration from Nongquawuse, the young Xhosa prophetess whose life and legacy have long been misrepresented. 'The Omoda X Khosi Nkosi collaboration is the perfect platform to reflect on the rich tapestry of our history,' said Khosi Nkosi. 'Our power lies in honouring our cultural heritage and drawing strength from our roots. With Ndlovukazi symbolising the evolution of Nkosazane, this collaboration is a celebration of identity and a reminder of where true strength comes from. 'A queen needed to be a princess first, so she could be empowered with wisdom and the strength to rule with grace,' added Nkosi. IOL Motoring
