Wolf scare back in Bahraich, two-year-old boy mauled to death
A two-year-old boy was mauled to death by an animal at Gadamar Kala village of Mahasi subdivision in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district in the early hours of Tuesday, bringing back a sense of scare in the area which reeled under dozens of wolf attacks last year, officials said. While the child's family and local residents claimed that a wolf attacked the child, forest officials said they would confirm the type of animal involved in the incident only after receiving a DNA report from the Wildlife Institute of India's forensic laboratory in Dehradun. Khushboo, the mother of the victim, Ayush, told reporters that she saw the wolf taking away her son. 'Last night, as we lay in the verandah of our house, wolves came and took away my child. I saw the wolf. We tried to chase it, but in vain. In the morning, Ayush's body was found in a sugarcane field,' she said. The incident comes nearly 10 months after a pack of wolves terrorised 35 villages of Mahasi, killing eight people, mostly children, and injuring at least 18. 'We have sent a sample of a chewed body part to the laboratory in Dehradun for testing,' said Bahraich Divisional Forest Officer Ajeet Kumar Singh. Forest department officials rushed to the spot after receiving information that an animal, claimed to be a wolf, entered a house at Gadamar Kala and took away a baby. The child's body was later found a short distance from the house, with his limbs partially eaten. The forest department deployed a drone to survey the area and claimed to spotted two jackals in the vicinity. The animals' pug marks were also found, they said. 'The picture will become clear after we receive the laboratory report,' said Singh. Seven teams were formed to track and capture the animal involved in the attack, officials said. Forest officials are using thermal camera drones and other methods, and have also launched an awareness campaign to educate locals on safety precautions. The residents, however, expressed anger over the forest department's reluctance to confirm the involvement of a wolf and a 'lack of urgency in capturing the animal'. 'This is the third incident in the past two months involving a wolf attack. In two of these cases — including the one early this morning — infants have died. In the third incident, family members woke up in time and managed to prevent the attack. Forest officials are not taking the matter seriously and are trying to dismiss it by hinting, without any evidence, that a jackal was involved,' said Sureshwar Singh, BJP MLA from Mahasi. Locals claim that the presence of a jackal in the area is unlikely. 'If the forest department does not take the matter seriously and catch the animal, the situation could become as bad as it was last year,' said the MLA. Last year, during a two-month-long 'Operation Bhediya', the forest department captured six wolves believed to be responsible for the deaths of eight people. Initially, officials had blamed a jackal, but later, based on drone footage and images captured using thermal cameras, it was confirmed that wolves were behind the attacks. Also, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had in September 2024 conducted an aerial survey of the area and met families of those who lost their lives in the wolf attacks. — PTI inputs

Syndicate using fake death certificates toget insurance claims busted in Prayagraj
Prayagraj: An alert from a life insurance company has blown the lid off an audacious fraud under which miscreants were allegedly attempting to swindle over ₹34 lakh through impersonation and use of forged death certificates in Prayagraj's Karchhana area. According to the FIR, filed on the basis of a complaint by Rahul Banerjee, chief manager, Reliance Nippon Life Insurance, the syndicate, active since April 2023, specializes in obtaining life insurance policies using fake identities and documents. Their modus operandi involved insuring individuals, sometimes through impersonation, and then filing death claims to pocket the hefty sums. While the red flags were raised during the stringent claim verification process, the investigators' suspicions were particularly aroused in the case of one Khushboo Vishwakarma, in whose name two policies were issued – one for ₹13,12,480 on April 25, 2023, and another for a death claim amount of ₹21,58,894 on Feb 5, 2024. The nominee in both was her husband, Ajay Kumar Vishwakarma. Barely months after the policies were issued, a death claim for Khushboo was filed on June 28, 2024, stating she had passed away on June 1, 2024. However, the insurance company's mandatory investigation for early death claims unearthed a shocking impersonation. The probe revealed that the photograph submitted with the policy application was not of Khushboo, but of a relative, Satya Devi, who is alive and was allegedly part of the conspiracy. Khushboo had passed away in 2022. The FIR implicates the insurance company's sales manager, Ankur Kumar Srivastava, who had processed these policies. Srivastava reportedly told investigators he was introduced to a key accused, Vijay Vishwakarma, by his former branch manager, Vijay Upadhyay, through Rakesh Pandey. Vijay Vishwakarma is accused of supplying the forged documents. The net widened as the investigation revealed two more suspicious policies for Ajit Kumar Vishwakarma and Sonam Vishwakarma, processed through the same network. A death claim of ₹6,43,998 for Ajit Kumar Vishwakarma's policy, submitted on Dec 20, 2024, is also under the scanner. The crucial documents for these policies were allegedly exchanged via WhatsApp between Vijay Vishwakarma and sales manager Ankur Kumar Srivastava. Police were also informed that commissions from all policies arranged by Vijay Vishwakarma were transferred into the bank account of Neelam Vishwakarma, an acquaintance whom Ankur Srivastava allegedly made a marketing executive at Vijay's behest. The police have registered a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including 319(2) (cheating by personation), 318(4) (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 338 (forgery for cheating), 336(3) (using forged document as genuine), and 340(2) (criminal conspiracy). Sub-inspector Vinay Kumar Yadav has been tasked with the investigation. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Brother's Day wishes , messages and quotes !

What To Do During Defence Mock Drills? Disha Patani's Sister Shares Quick Crash Course
Last Updated: In the video that Khushboo shared, she revealed how people should act during hostile attacks, air raids or blackout raids. As tensions escalate between India and Pakistan, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered to conduct mock drills at 244 districts across the country on Wednesday, May 7. Ahead of the same, actress Disha Patani's sister, Khushboo, has shared a quick crash course for people, explaining the dos and don'ts during such drills. Khushboo is a former Lieutenant in the Indian Army who hails from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. In the video that Khushboo shared, she revealed how people should act during hostile attacks, air raids or blackout raids. She mentioned that it is very important to learn certain tactics to protect oneself during attacks from the enemy country. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Major Khushboo Patani(KP) (@khushboo_patani) What To Do After Listening To Air Raid Sirens? Khushboo Patani began her video by explaining how one should act upon hearing the air raid sirens. She mentioned that one must act immediately upon hearing such sirens and try to find a spot which can act like a bunker. She mentioned that people who are at their homes during such air raids must hide themselves on the ground floor or in basements. She also stated that underground parking places should be used during such times because they act as a bunker. However, if you are outdoor when air sirens are used, one must evacuate buildings and look for open places or ground. She also suggested that people should lie on the ground to get minimum impact of the air waves at such a time. What Are Blackout Drills? How Should One Act? Disha Patani's sister also explained that in blackout drills, people must switch off all lights in their houses and cover their windows. She mentioned that such blackout drills were also used during the 1965 Indo-Pakistan war. Khushboo also suggested that people keep small torches during such blackout raids. She mentioned that even though cell phone flashlights can also be used, they only drain the battery of the mobile phone. How Should One Evacuate? Khushboo further mentioned that people should evacuate their homes only when authorities ask them to do so. However, she shared that one must prepare oneself for the same. She asked everyone to keep a small bag ready in which they should keep all their essentials, including a water bottle, cash, debit/credit cards, food items, important documents, first aid kits and battery bank, among other things. Khushboo also shared that children should be advised to listen to elders and urged everyone to stay together during this time. First Published:
