Young models connect beyond the runway

Over 40 young models, both local and non-local, gathered at the Mall of Africa for an elegant picnic organised by four local modelling agencies. This event, held on August 9 to commemorate National Women's Day, was spearheaded by Face of Rabie Ridge, Mr and Miss Rovers, Mr and Miss Exceptional RSA, and Zingami Modeling Academy. Models from Midrand, Soweto, Rabie Ridge, and across Johannesburg answered the call to connect beyond the runway. Read more: Rabie Ridge model struts toward her dreams The picnic featured dynamic activities, including relay races and hot-and-cold games, specifically designed to promote camaraderie, teamwork, and spirited competition. These activities served as a vital platform for participants to share their experiences, the challenges they've conquered, and the milestones that motivate them to keep striving for success. Sanele Khuzwayo, founder of Face of Rabie Ridge, asserted the event's effectiveness in forging connections among models from diverse backgrounds. 'This event was crucial for all participants. We aimed to instil the importance of honouring every woman in their lives – not just through respect, but through active celebration. 'Given the disturbing rate of gender-based violence impacting South African women, hosting this picnic on Women's Day was a huge tribute to izimbokondo [women].' The founders of these agencies are committed to organising more events that highlight the importance of community and connection among models, reinforcing that their journey is about much more than just modelling. 'Building strong bonds is imperative,' said Khuzwayo, 'and initiatives like these will continue to pave the way for unity and empowerment within the modelling industry.' Heartbroken family mourns e-hailing driver killed just days after buying his first car

A young e-hailing driver, Siyanda Mvelase, 27, was shot and burned at Maponya Mall on Wednesday. Image: Facebook/COJ The aunt of Siyanda Mthokozisi Mvelase, 27, an e-hailing driver shot and burned at Maponya Mall on Wednesday night, says the family is heartbroken, as he had only bought his car two weeks ago and started working as an Uber driver just two days before he was killed. Zanele Khuzwayo told the media on Thursday in the area that Mvelase had only just begun his work as an Uber driver, two days before his death. 'He was the son of my eldest sister and an only child,' Khuzwayo said. 'He was born in 1998. After finishing matric, he moved to Johannesburg to look for work. I used to help him now and then, but he always tried to stand on his own. Eventually, he moved back home to KwaZulu-Natal.' Mvelase returned to Johannesburg recently to pursue better opportunities, according to his aunt. 'A few months ago, he told me, 'Auntie, I'm coming back to Joburg, and I'm going to get an Uber car,'' she recalled. 'He was so excited. He finally got the car two weeks ago and started working this past Monday. Then boom, by Wednesday night - we got the news.' Khuzwayo said the family was in shock. 'He wanted to make a living and take care of his mother, who is sickly. He had so many plans, and they were all cut short.' Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Mvelase was killed on Wednesday evening, August 13, when unknown gunmen attacked e-hailing drivers outside Maponya Mall. Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said one vehicle was seen stopping at the entrance when four men approached and opened fire on the driver before setting the car alight. 'Another vehicle nearby was also shot at, but the driver managed to flee. That vehicle was also torched,' Nevhuhulwi said. A passerby and the second driver sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to the hospital. A case of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and arson has been opened for investigation. The South African Police Service (SAPS) and Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) were deployed to the scene, with police saying the violence is suspected to be linked to ongoing tensions in the taxi industry. IOL News previously reported that the township of Pimville came to a standstill on Thursday as angry residents vowed to shut down Maponya Mall for seven days. The protest was in response to the attack on e-hailing drivers. In retaliation, one minibus taxi was burned by community members. The violent clash follows months of rising tensions between traditional taxi operators and e-hailing services, which have increasingly become flashpoints in South African public transport disputes. Meanwhile, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mmamoloko Kubayi expressed outrage over the attack, describing it as both a criminal act and a violation of democratic values. 'The lives of innocent people were put in danger when bullets flew around Maponya Mall,' said Kubayi. 'This is not only a matter of criminality but an affront to our constitutional rights. As a daughter of Soweto, I stand in solidarity with the community.' Kubayi also called for swift justice and a coordinated government response through the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster. In addition, the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) urged the government to expedite the implementation of amended National Land Transport Act (NLTA) regulations. SANTACO spokesperson Rebecca Phala said the delay in enforcing the new regulations has created a 'regulatory vacuum', leading to an unchecked influx of unlicensed e-hailing operators. 'This unregulated environment is fuelling safety risks, including hijackings, abductions, and violent crimes linked to the sector,' said Phala. 'SANTACO cannot remain silent. The government must act swiftly to enforce the revised NLTA regulations to ensure the safety of all commuters and operators.' IOL News

Gold for netball coach

The South Coast region has once again excelled in sports, netball in particular. Nkule Khuzwayo (29), who recently attended the Winter National School Sport Championship at Howard College, Durban as a coach for Team KZN returned with a gold medal. These games are for players from schools with special needs only. Khuzwayo's team competed in the deaf category. Also, four out of the 12 players were from St Martin de Porres School. It was the first time she coached the team, she was only hired in June, and had a few weeks of preparation before the big tournament in mid-July. Khuzwayo who was born and bred in Mawuleni Village near Port Shepstone said winning the championship will go a long way in boosting her career. She said it was not easy to train before the major event, as they had to train in Durban on the weekends. She said all 11 districts transported players from their jurisdictions, and sometimes the schools did as well. Team KZN's first match was against Team North West which they demolished 13-1. In a duel against Team Mpumalanga, they won 12-1, before their last group match against Team Free State which they won 16-1. 'The next day we had to cross and played Team Western Cape in the semi-final, which we won 6-5. We went to the final and faced Team Gauteng, we won by 6-5. It was sweet to win over Team Gauteng because almost every year Team Gauteng and Team Western Cape become winners,' she remarked. 'I must say I would have preferred to face Team Eastern Cape or even Team Mpumalanga in the final rather than Team Gauteng, but Team Mpumalanga could not beat Team Gauteng when we crossed after group matches.' Life sentence for hitman in brutal murder of ANC councillor Zakhele Khuzwayo

The Ntuzuma Regional Court has sentenced Phathisakhe Ngiba to life imprisonment for the murder of ANC councillor Zakhele Khuzwayo Image: File The Ntuzuma Regional Court has sentenced a hitman, Phathisakhe Thuthukani Ngiba, to life imprisonment for the brutal murder Zakhele Khuzwayo. Khuzwayo was killed in 2022 while seated in his car, conversing with a friend. He was the ANC ward 11 councillor under the KwaMaphumulo Local Municipality. Ngiba was also sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for possession of an unlawful firearm and two years for possession of unlawful ammunition. Sentences were ordered to run concurrently. Additionally, Ngiba was declared unfit to possess a firearm. According to the State in 2022, the KwaMaphumulo municipality was run by the IFP in coalition with EFF and the Independent Alliance. After realising that the coalition was not safe, the IFP was desperate to stay in power and keep control of the municipality. 'The IFP approached the ANC councillors and convinced them to resign in exchange for money to start businesses. The IFP did this with the aim of having a by-election and gaining more votes. The ANC councillors, including Khuzwayo, refused,' the State said. Video Player is loading. On September 15, 2022 Khuzwayo was gunned down. Evidence led by the State senior prosecutor advocate Elvis Gcweka revealed that the fingerprints of Ngiba were found in Khuzwayo's car. Cellphone data also placed Ngiba at the crime scene during the time of the killing. The court also learned that Ngiba used a Silver VW Polo Sedan as a getaway vehicle. In a victim impact statement, Peaceful Thuleleni Khuzwayo, the wife of Khuzwayo, said the death of her husband brought unimaginable pain for her and their children. She said she lived in fear as she did not know who killed him, and the Khuzwayo family accused her of the murder. Slain ANC councillor Zakhele Khuzwayo Image: FACEBOOK 'People were pointing fingers at me. There was a feud between my husband's family and me. It was a hurtful ordeal, but I had to swallow that and be strong for my children as they were still young and needed my support,' she said. Peaceful added that the quality of life improved in her family when Khuzwayo got a permanent job at the iLembe municipality, but that was short-lived as he was killed. She described Khuzwayo as a loving and responsible father. 'We lived happily and peacefully,' she said. She said after his death, she had to go and look for a job, but indicated that she was still not coping with losing her husband, who was their pillar of strength and protector. 'I have been trying to be strong. Fear is part of my life, and some days I cannot sleep,' she added. The elder brother of Khuzwayo, Sifiso Khuzwayo, said the family was happy with the sentence, but they wished for investigations to continue, so that other people could be prosecuted. 'We still want to know what happened because that man (Ngiba) was not alone in this,' he said. Ngiba is also charged with the murders of Siyabonga Mkhize, an ANC ward candidate in Ward 101 in Durban, and Mzukisi Nyanga, who was an ANC activist. Both Nyanga and Mkhize were shot and killed in 2021. Their murder trial is set to resume at the Durban High Court in November.
