Kids play kitchens recalled for strangulation risk after toddler death

A 2-year-old child died in 2023 after his shirt got caught on one of the kitchen sets, the recall notice said. Nearly 200,000 kids play kitchens have been recalled for a strangulation hazard after a child died while playing with one. On July 31, Backyard Kids issued a recall of about 192,000 KidKraft Farm to Table Model Play Kitchens, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. According to the recall notice, the play kitchens include hooks used to hold toy kitchen accessories that could catch on children's clothing, posing a strangulation risk that could cause injury or death. In February 2023, a 23-month-old child in Oregon who was climbing on the back of the play kitchen asphyxiated after his shirt got caught on one of the hooks. He was unable to rescue himself and died from strangulation and asphyxia, according to the notice. The companies said they have not received any other reports of the hooks injuring a child or catching their clothing. Which kids kitchen sets have been recalled? The sets being recalled are the KidKraft Farm to Table Model Play Kitchens, which can be identified by the model number 53411. The model number is on a sticker on the back of the product, according to the recall notice. The play kitchens were sold online by Kidkraft, Amazon and Walmart from 2018 to July 2025 for between $120 and $270, according to the notice. What to do if your kids kitchen set has been recalled Consumers who have one of the recalled play kitchens should immediately stop using the set and remove the original hooks, the recall notice said. Backyard Kids is providing free replacement hooks for consumers who have been affected by the recall. Consumers can contact Backyard Kids for the replacement hooks on KidKraft's website, by calling 1-800-882-0234 or via email at recall@ KidKraft has hook removal instructions on its website. Why is Backyard Kids, not KidKraft, issuing the recall? KidKraft, which is a separate kid's toy company from Backyard Kids, originally manufactured the sets. However, KidKraft filed for bankruptcy in 2024 and cannot conduct the recall, it said on its website. Backyard Kids purchased the remaining sets from KidKraft after it filed for bankruptcy and sold some units to customers, which is why it is issuing the recall.
