Philippine music icon Hajji Alejandro dies aged 70
Filipino music legend Hajji Alejandro has died at the age of 70, his family confirmed Tuesday, April 22.
Alejandro, known as the original 'Kilabot ng Kolehiyala' in the early 1970s', passed away after a battle with stage 4 colon cancer. His partner, Alynna Velasquez, had publicly shared news of his illness in an interview last March.
'It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Dad and Son, Angelito 'Hajji' T. Alejandro,' the Alejandro family said in a statement. The family also requested privacy as they mourn his loss.
Alejandro was known for his smooth voice, charm, and timeless stage presence. His signature song, Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika, became an anthem for Filipino musical pride and remains one of the most celebrated OPM classics.
He was born on December 26, 1954, in Alaminos, Pangasinan. He rose to fame as a member of the influential Circus Band, alongside other future music greats like Basil Valdez, Tillie Moreno, and Jacqui Magno. He later launched a successful solo career that cemented his legacy in Philippine entertainment.
In December 2024, he celebrated his 70th birthday. His daughter, singer Rachel Alejandro, paid tribute to him on Instagram, calling him a man blessed with 'youthful good looks,' 'abundant talent,' and 'lasting good health.'
