Philippine music icon Hajji Alejandro dies aged 70
Filipino music legend Hajji Alejandro has died at the age of 70, his family confirmed Tuesday, April 22.
Alejandro, known as the original 'Kilabot ng Kolehiyala' in the early 1970s', passed away after a battle with stage 4 colon cancer. His partner, Alynna Velasquez, had publicly shared news of his illness in an interview last March.
'It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Dad and Son, Angelito 'Hajji' T. Alejandro,' the Alejandro family said in a statement. The family also requested privacy as they mourn his loss.
Alejandro was known for his smooth voice, charm, and timeless stage presence. His signature song, Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika, became an anthem for Filipino musical pride and remains one of the most celebrated OPM classics.
He was born on December 26, 1954, in Alaminos, Pangasinan. He rose to fame as a member of the influential Circus Band, alongside other future music greats like Basil Valdez, Tillie Moreno, and Jacqui Magno. He later launched a successful solo career that cemented his legacy in Philippine entertainment.
In December 2024, he celebrated his 70th birthday. His daughter, singer Rachel Alejandro, paid tribute to him on Instagram, calling him a man blessed with 'youthful good looks,' 'abundant talent,' and 'lasting good health.'

There's a super cool new pop-up at the Louvre Abu Dhabi
Culture fans, this one's for you – and it's not just about the art. Louvre Abu Dhabi is playing host to a flavour-packed Filipino pop-up that promises to be as creative on the plate as the masterpieces lining the museum's walls. Kooya Filipino Eatery is stepping into the spotlight this summer for a culinary collaboration with the museum's café. Taking over for two weekends only – June 13-14 and 27-28 – from 6pm to 11pm, the Kooya x Museum Café pop-up brings the spirit of the Philippines to the capital with dishes that are deep-rooted in heritage and full of soul. At the helm is Chef JP Anglo, the celebrated chef behind Kooya and Sarsa in the Philippines. Known for reimagining classic Filipino comfort food, Chef JP is bringing a menu that hits all the right nostalgic notes, with a fresh twist. Starters include bulalo empanadas, crispy okoy fritters and golden-fried lumpia Shanghai. Mains dive deeper into tradition – think adobo fried chicken, slow-cooked beef belly caldereta, kare kare peanut stew and gising gising (that's veggies in coconut cream and fish roe, in case you didn't know). There's even a squid-ink version of palabok noodles for something a little different. Leave room for dessert – the halo halo here is a layered love letter to Filipino sweets, packed with yam, ice cream, shaved ice and a whopping 16 toppings. Plus, Silvanas make an appearance – those moreish buttercream sandwich cookies that melt in your mouth. Thirsty? The drinks menu doesn't disappoint either. Expect mixed drinks and mocktails inspired by the landscapes and flavours of the Philippines – including a basil cooler, pomelo and lemongrass iced tea with a hit of kaffir lime. Mark your calendars, book your table and come hungry – this is one museum night that feeds the senses in every way. June 13-14, 27-28, 6pm-11pm. Louvre Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island. Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi celebrates Independence Day with flag-raising, community fiesta
The Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi marked the country's 127th Independence Day with a flag-raising ceremony and a community Fiesta. Led by H.E. Alfonso Ferdinand Ver, Philippine Ambassador to the UAE, the event brought together Filipinos from various schools, community groups, and organizations. Guests enjoyed traditional Filipino street food like taho (sweet tofu snack), sorbetes (Filipino ice cream), and other local favorites, aiming to highlight Filipino culture and unity abroad. In his Independence Day message, Ambassador Ver emphasized the importance of reflecting on the theme 'Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan' (Freedom, Future, History), honoring the sacrifices of Filipino heroes, celebrating the country's hard-earned freedoms, and recognizing the collective duty to build a better future. 'This year's celebration is particularly significant as we highlight the growing and strategic partnership between the Philippines and the United Arab Emirates,' the ambassador said. 'Anchored in mutual respect and reinforced by the presence of nearly a million Filipinos in the UAE, our bilateral relations have expanded into a forward-looking cooperation and collaboration in new and previously untapped fields,' he added. He emphasized the growing relationship between the two nations, strengthened by the official visit of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to the UAE in November 2024, and the several agreements signed to boost cooperation in trade, energy, culture, digital innovation, environment, public safety, and government services. Ambassador Ver also noted the UAE's strength in digital technologies and how this matches the Philippines' goals for growth. He lauded OFWs, especially those working in IT, engineering, and creative industries, as well as entrepreneurs, for contributing to the UAE's progress and carrying the Filipino spirit of excellence. 'This year, the UAE celebrates the Year of Community. We take great pride in the integral role that the Filipino community plays in this country's success and in enriching the UAE's social and economic fabric,' Ambassador Ver said. 'As we look toward the future, let us celebrate not only the freedom we cherish, but also the strong and evolving partnership we share with the UAE — a relationship that continues to grow in breadth, depth, innovation, shared purpose, and mutual benefit,' he added.
