Limerick homeowners attempt to cash in amid ‘record-breaking' Ryder Cup demand

Brian Higgins, accommodation manager for Accommodation For The Event, a Kildare-based booking tool, said: 'Some bookings began remarkably early, with the first home for the 2027 event reserved as far back as September 2022. 'That was a fully detached home about 25 minutes from the venue,' said Mr Higgins. Accommodation For The Event has been operating for over a decade, supporting Ryder Cup tournaments globally, including the upcoming 2025 event in New York. 'We pretty much dominate space internationally,' said Mr Higgins. 'Even pro golfers contact the office and Matt Fitzpatrick's company was on to us looking to book a property.' Some high-end homes have been listed at striking rates. One property in Clarina has been listed for €85,000. Still, the platform takes a measured approach to pricing oversight. 'If a property is uploaded above market value, we reach out to the homeowner and ask why,' said Mr Higgins. 'But we can't dictate the price. It's their home and they might include extras like airport transfers or food.' For the Clarina property, the large 5-bed home can sleep over 10 people. Included in the price is a large outdoor sitting area and transport to and from Adare Manor. According to Mr Higgins, listings undergo a review process within 24 hours, and homeowners must pay a registration fee, currently priced at €395, to activate their listing. ADVERTISEMENT 'There's a lot of work that goes into the security,' he explained. 'Payments are linked to credit or debit cards, and we verify every listing with a call.' The no-commission platform offers protections for both parties, including spam-filtered inquiry forms. 'The whole process is designed to protect the families and website users,' Mr Higgins added. Security is expected to tighten tremendously around Adare for the event. 'At the K Club Ryder Cup, people within a two-mile radius needed photo ID just to access their homes,' he recalled. Homes are for rent in Tipperary, Clare, Galway, and further afield.

Acornhoek City FC nurtures young talent

LIMPOPO – Acornhoek City Football Club, a new soccer development team, officially began training three months ago with the goal of grooming young, skilled players. Though founded in July last year, the team, also known as Majita Ya Style, started training in March under the leadership of Sipho Dzimba, founder and chairman of SD Mabaya FC. The club currently has 47 players across three age groups: u/13, u/15, and u/17. Training sessions are held at the Acornhoek Police Station sports field. On Saturday, May 24, all three teams travelled to Shatale near Bushbuckridge to play friendly matches against Mandela Warriors Football Club, part of their ongoing development programme that includes both intensive training and competitive play. Dzimba said that although he is also building players for his Kildare-based SD Mabaya FC, Acornhoek City will operate as an independent club. 'Our goal is to identify and develop talented youth from this region and give them exposure to professional opportunities, including scouts from major teams,' he said. 'We're grateful for the support from parents so far. It's been a busy and promising start.' He emphasised the need for local community and business support to ensure the club's growth and sustainability. 'It's inspiring to see boys as young as nine eager to showcase their talent,' Dzimba said. 'But to succeed, we urgently need gear, jerseys, cones, soccer balls, water bottles, and boots. We welcome any donations, sponsorships, or partnerships.' Dzimba's other team, SD Mabaya FC, competes in the Ximhungwe County League hosted by the Bushbuckridge Local Football Association. Nestlé backs Barretstown in €100,000 three-year deal

International food group Nestlé has teamed up with Barretstown – the organisation providing camps and programmes for seriously ill children and their families – in a programme that aims to raise more than €100,000 over the next three years. Apart from raising funds, Nestlé, which employs more than 700 people in Ireland, intends to be involved in 'strategic supports', such as volunteering, mentoring and supplying product to help reduce the Kildare-based charity's costs. Barretstown was established by actor Paul Newman in 1994. Photograph: Frank Miller/The Irish Times Barretstown chief executive Dee Ahearn said it was the charity's ambition to ensure any child with a serious illness has the opportunity to participate in its programmes. 'Partnerships with organisations like Nestlé Ireland will play a hugely important role in supporting Barretstown to achieve this objective,' she said. Established in 1994 by actor Paul Newman, Barretstown is Ireland's largest and longest-established provider of therapeutic camps and programmes catering for the needs of children and young adolescents diagnosed with cancer or other serious illnesses. It works with more than 25,000 children and families every year and aims to have provided services to more than 250,000 children by the end of the decade. 'We are proud to have been chosen as Nestlé Ireland's staff charity and to have an opportunity to work closely with the largest food and beverage company in the world,' Ms Ahearn said. Nestlé Ireland staff nominate and vote every few years for a charity on which to focus its support. Its community engagement programme has contributed more than €8.5 million to charitable causes in Ireland over the past two decades as well as providing business support and mentoring programmes. Nestlé Ireland country manager Kieran Conroy said that partnering with Barretstown was an opportunity for Nestlé to bring its community work to life in a tangible way to benefit both Barretstown and the team at Nestlé. 'It's an exciting three-year partnership and we are so proud to be involved with an organisation which is making an incredible difference to the lives of seriously ill children and families every day,' he said. 'We look forward to working closely with Barretstown and playing a role, building awareness of its life-changing work.'

Usually released in the autumn, the always revelatory and expertly shot documentary series continues to chronicle the untold aspects of some of sport's darkest stories. With three all-new films releasing weekly across May 6, 13, and 20, this new series kicks off with an anatomy of former Washington Wizards teammates Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton. Their collective claim to fame is jarring the world of basketball by drawing guns on each other in their NBA locker room in 2009. Through raw first-hand accounts, Arenas and Crittenton unpack the events that had a life-altering impact on both men, which ultimately led Crittenton down a dark and tragic path.
