Education and Training official pleads guilty to child abuse material possession

An official with Kildare and Wicklow Education and Training Board has pleaded guilty to possession of child abuse material. Bernard Morley, 49, of Coolnakilly, Glenealy, Co Wicklow, was listed to go on trial before Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court this week in relation to a charge for the possession of child pornography. However, the accused's counsel, Ronan Kennedy SC, said his client could be arraigned during a sitting of the court on Tuesday when Mr Morley's name was called out. Mr Morley, who works in the further education division of Kildare and Wicklow ETB, pleaded guilty to a single charge of possession of child abuse material contrary to Section 6 (1) of the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act 1998. The court heard the offence related to the possession of one video and three images on dates between January 22, 2023 and April 23, 2023. Mr Kennedy said he wished to obtain a number of reports for his client in advance of a sentencing date. Judge Patrick Quinn remanded the accused on continuing bail to October 8 when a date for a sentencing hearing will be fixed. Eligible Wicklow voters to be given opportunity to register at local events

Through the collaboration of community leaders, groups, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders, the voter registration drive hopes to drastically improve voter registration in Wicklow. National Voter Registration Day takes place on Wednesday, April 30, with Wicklow events in Arklow, Blessington and Baltinglass, running from 10am to 1pm. The Arklow venue is the AFETC Centre, Fernhill Plaza, run by the Kildare and Wicklow Education and Training Board. The venue for Blessington is Blessington Further Education Centre, while Baltinglass Library will also host an event. The primary goals of this campaign are to ensure that everyone who is eligible to vote is registered to vote, and to inform under-represented groups, disadvantaged communities, and young people of their right to vote and how to register, and to promote the importance of active citizenship and participating in the democratic process. Speaking ahead of National Voter Registration Day, leadership officer at the National Women's Council Liliana Fernandez said: 'Although things are slowly improving there is still a lack of knowledge about voter rights among many people in Ireland and Wicklow. This has an impact on civic engagement and representation in Irish politics. "This year we are continuing to collaborate with the Electoral Commission (An Coimisiún Toghcháin), local authorities, PPN's, civil society organisations and community leaders across the country to inform minorities and young people of their political rights, educate them on the roles of the President of Ireland, TD's and local councillors, the functions of our political institutions, and how to register to vote.' Every election cycle, many people find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, do not update their registration, or are not aware of how to register to vote. Policy and communications manager at the Irish Council for International Students (ICOS) Brian Hearne said: 'We are engaging with a wide range of groups and organisations, and gathering support around Wicklow for this year's National Voter Registration Day. "We're working to get every eligible voter registered, especially young people and underrepresented groups who are often unaware of their rights at the ballot box. For example, many migrants who have been recently naturalised, need to be aware of updating their citizenship status at to be able to vote in the upcoming presidential election. "Also, other migrants who do not have Irish citizenship are unaware that they can vote in local elections. We recognise marginalised communities' rights to participate in political life in Ireland. We aim to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities. "By increasing engagement in the democratic processes and voter registration, we can ensure that every eligible voter has the opportunity and is motivated to vote.' To date, the initiative has connected with more than 60 organisations, spreading awareness of National Voter Registration Day among diverse communities and all public representatives. Wicklow residents can also visit the NVRD website to verify their eligibility to vote, check the register, and learn more about their voting rights.
