MLB insiders say Yankees–Red Sox deadline deal is a real possibility

MLB insiders say Yankees–Red Sox deadline deal is a real possibility originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Alex Bregman in pinstripes? It still sounds far-fetched. It probably is a long shot, but insiders are buzzing about the Boston Red Sox using the third baseman as a trade chip. Advertisement And the Yankees were named as the perfect landing spot. According to ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan, Bregman is the most impactful player who could be dealt at this year's deadline. They only give it a 10 percent chance, but hey, they are saying there's a chance. Bregman's name is also starting to surface more often among league insiders as Boston's most likely trade chip. Bregman was slashing .299/.385/.553 before landing on the injured list with a quad strain. He's still owed the bulk of a 3-year, $120 million deal—but that includes opt-outs after 2025 and 2026. That makes him both expensive and flexible, which could appeal to a contender looking for short-term impact without a long-term commitment. Advertisement For the Yankees, the fit is clear. Third base remains a revolving door. Bregman brings postseason experience, right-handed power, and a playoff mindset. He knows what October feels like, and he can still hit. Boston Red Sox third base Alex Bregman (2) walks on the field in the first inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Heitman-Imagn Images Of course, there's history here. Yankees–Red Sox trades are rare, but not unheard of. Boston would have to be willing to deal inside the division, and New York would need to part with real pieces to make it happen. Bregman isn't exactly beloved in the Bronx because of his ties to the Houston Astros' cheating scandal, but he isn't exactly treated like Jose Altuve either. The Yankees kicked the tires on Bregman last winter but weren't interested in a long-term deal. The opt-outs in his contract could be attractive. Advertisement Another connected insider, Jim Bowden, suggested the Yankees would revisit a deal with Bregman this winter if he opted out. It's a long shot. But the Yankees are in a win-now window, and Bregman fits the kind of profile they've chased before—productive, proven, and playoff-tested. If Boston continues to struggle, Brian Cashman should be calling. Trade Idea Lands Cubs Answer at Third Base

Trade Idea Lands Cubs Answer at Third Base originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs' offense has been stellar in 2025, ranking No. 2 in MLB, averaging 5.37 runs per game. The only weakness in the Cubs' lineup has been the production from third base. Advertisement Chicago have tried a few different options, but none have been able to provide consistent success. Rookie third baseman Matt Shaw has received the bulk of the work at third base. Shaw was one of the Cubs' top infield prospects coming into the season, and Chicago hoped he could grow into the future at the position. However, in 48 games and 160 at-bats, Shaw has struggled, hitting just .219 with a .313 SLG, and just a couple of home runs and nine RBI. The young third baseman struggled mightily out of the gate and was sent back down to Triple-A. When he rejoined the major league club, he had a stretch where he got hot, but he has not been able to sustain it. The Cubs' other options at third base have come from a combination of Vidal Brujan, Jon Berti, Nicky Lopez, and Gage Workman, who have combined to hit less than .160 and seven RBI in total. Advertisement ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan put together a list of trade candidates that has Arizona Diamondbacks' third baseman Eugenio Suarez as a potential answer for the Cubs at third base. Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez (28) hits a two run home run against the Toronto Blue Jays in the second inning at Rogers Hamilton - Imagn Images Suarez is 34 years old and in the final year of his contract, so he would be a likely trade piece for the Diamondbacks at the deadline if they decide to sell. Although Arizona has been against becoming sellers all season, their wave of injuries has nearly forced them to consider all options. The Diamondbacks' third baseman is having a very strong season, hitting .251 with an .892 OPS. Suarez has hit 25 home runs on the season and leads the National League with 67 RBI. The 12-year veteran currently holds a 142 OPS+ this season, which, if it continues, would set a new career-high. Advertisement Suarez did leave the Diamondbacks' game against the Chicago White Sox on Monday after being hit by a pitch on his left hand. However, his initial X-rays came back negative, and it's been labeled as a left-hand contusion. With Suarez in the final year of his contract, the Cubs would likely be acquiring the third baseman solely for a World Series run in 2025. However, the Cubs already rank No. 2 in runs scored, and adding an elite hitter to the one weak spot in the lineup could lift the Cubs to where they need to be. Cubs Predicted to Replace Dansby Swanson With Young Star

Cubs Predicted to Replace Dansby Swanson With Young Star originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs are nearing a first-place record in all of baseball, but with the 2025 MLB Draft less than a month away, conversations are being held about which positions the organization wants to upgrade. Advertisement Dansby Swanson is a former Gold Glove winner in 2023 with the Cubs and 2022 with the Atlanta Braves, but he has struggled at the plate for going on three straight seasons. According to ESPN's Kiley McDaniel, the 31-year-old could be getting replaced in the near future. That is because McDaniel has predicted the Cubs to take a new shortstop at No. 17 overall in the draft. From the University of Arkansas, Wehiwa Aloy is 22nd-ranked prospect in the draft, and McDaniel's 14th-ranked prospect. He has had just five errors across 205 total chances, making him one of the best college shortstops in the draft. Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson (7) throws his helmet after striking out during the ninth inning of against the San Diego Padres at Petco Poroy-Imagn Images "Aloy could go a half-dozen picks higher or even a bit lower than this, as the college bats in this tier are seemingly in a different order for every team," McDaniel said. Advertisement Aloy turned 21 this winter, which makes him almost exactly 10 years younger than Swanson, who also has a February birthday. He is actually playing in the College World Series and has been one of Arkansas' few offensive bright spots. The young star is hitting .352 at Arkansas this season, with a monster 21 home runs and 68 RBIs across 306 plate appearances. It is hard to predict exactly how well Aloy's game will translate to the MLB level, but Swanson's declining average and career-low on-base percentage could motivate the Cubs to make this selection. However, Swanson has still hit 13 homers in Chicago's 73 games, and is on pace to approach a career high of 27. His job is safe for now, but if Aloy is the pick, things could get interesting in 2026 or 2027.
