Marvel star's forgotten sci-fi movie that's a cross between Aliens and The Terminator
Fans think it's underrated and needs to be seen by more people
A Marvel star's forgotten sci-fi movie is said to be a cross between Aliens and The Terminator.
Vanessa Kirby is currently impressing audiences with her turn as Sue Storm, otherwise known as The Invisible Woman. She is one of the heroes that can be seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's latest release The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
However, fans of Kirby's work are encouraged to seek out one of her lesser known titles. That is the British sci-fi action Kill Command, which was originally released back in 2016, just before Kirby was introduced in Netflix series The Crown or the Fast and Furious movie franchise.
According to its synopsis, a training mission on a remote island turns into a nightmare for cyborg Katherine Mills and a squad of marines when they are mysteriously attacked by drones.
It's a perfect time for fans of Kirby's turn in the Fantastic Four to check out one of her earlier works. There are more than one way to stream the title, as it is available on Prime Video, Disney Plus and is currently streaming free on Tubi.
The film was written and directed by Steven Gomez who also works as a visual effects supervisor on several other titles. No surprise then that the CGI of the film is praised by many fans despite the projects low budget.
Something that critics noticed too as it earned a respectable 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One reviewer stated: "Steven Gomez' feature debut, Kill Command, is a stunning piece of eye candy for those who like their cinematic technology to bite back."
Another penned: "Steven Gomez's sci-fi thriller comes on like the ultimate James Cameron homage and fortunately, the retro vibe extends to the storytelling, which is a brisk and well-judged balance."
While some fans agree that the story isn't completely standout original, they still believe it is an entertaining watch. One, sharing their thoughts online said: "Brilliant film, utterly unoriginal but utterly convincing, it plays out like a cross between Aliens, The Terminator, Doom and The Lion King."
Many who have come across it were surprised they hadn't heard of it before, especially considering Kirby's rise to prominence so soon after. One person wondered: "How the hell had I not heard of this movie?! Such a great military sci-fi film. Standard rogue AI idea but really well done. Some really great actors and dialogue that is way better than your average sci-fi. It's basically Predator but with AI robot soldiers instead of an alien but that's totally fine with me! A great way to spend a couple of hours. Thoroughly recommended."
Someone else added: "This is an underrated movie, with a talented cast of British and Danish actors, all playing Americans. In the cast, Vanessa Kirby is the biggest name in the movie. An interesting story about using A.I as a weapon and it's going wrong. The special effects are good, and the story is interesting, so watch it."
Sharing a similar sentiment, one person commented: "Surprisingly good movie, considering it was made at such a low budget. Started watching it simply to pass time, ended up holding my breath until the last scene.. Don't go looking for originality, just watch it for fantastic actions and CGI."
Meanwhile someone else stated: "If you liked Terminator or Predator, you will enjoy this movie as well. Does not feel like a low budget movie - very well done. Great ending. "
Kill Command is streaming on Tubi, Prime Video and Disney Plus.
