This is because a Beech King Air, which had been going to Belfast, had an in-flight emergency and diverted to Birmingham instead.
A statement posted on the airport's social media reads: "Following an aircraft incident, the runway is temporarily closed.
"We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause.
"We will keep passengers already at the airport informed and those due to travel later today are advised to check the status of their flight before coming to the airport.
"We will continue to issues updates when we can."
Several dozen flights were due to leave and arrive between now and 6pm.
It has not been reported how many people were aboard the plane which diverted, although King Airs usually carry at least two pilots.
