Newsboy's ITV selections for Newmarket and Goodwood plus tips from Friday's other meetings
Newsboy is backing Silver Knot, to win the Betfred Jockey Stakes at Newmarket and he expects Cosmos Year to prevail in the King Charles II Stakes, both live on ITV
SILVER KNOTT is fancied to make a winning return from his travels to lift the Group 2 Betfred Jockey Club Stakes (4.05) at Newmarket on Friday. The son of Lope De Vega was a smart two-year-old in Britain for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin in 2022, with victories at Group 3 level in the Solario Stakes at Sandown Park and Newmarket's Autumn Stakes. After running down the field behind Chaldean in the 2000 Guineas the following May, Silver Knott continued his career in America, running with credit in defeat in Graded company during the remainder of the year.
But my selection began 2024 with three successes at Grade 2 level, scoring at Keeneland in April, Belmont At The Big A the following month and at Saratoga in July. William Buick's partner made his return to action at Meydan at the beginning of March and lifted the Group 2 Dubai City Of Gold Stakes by a cosy two lengths from Passion And Glory. Silver Knott escapes a penalty for that performance and should follow up.
After impressive scores at Sandown and Kempton, COSMIC YEAR looks good in the Listed TrustATrader King Charles II Stakes (2.20). Harry Charlton and Juddmonte elected to swerve the 2,000 Guineas with the son of Kingman and Passage Of Time - the latter own Classic favourite Field Of Gold - but Group company surely awaits in the short term. An unlucky defeat at last month's Craven fixture makes FIFTY NIFTY hard to get away from in the Betfred "Nifty 50" Handicap (3.30), while DANTE'S LAD has plenty going for him in the Betfred "The Classic Bookmaker" Handicap (2.55). At Goodwood, SCENIC and Saffie Osborne rate a powerful combination in the Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Daisy Warwick Fillies' Stakes (3.10). The Ed Walker-saddled mare proved herself at this level when coming home in front at York's Ebor Festival last August and her ability to go well fresh is another plus. He won over course and distance as a three-year-old and top weight SHAGRAAN appeals in the Racehorse Ownership From £25 At Handicap (2.35). Also capable of giving his rivals weight and a beating is WALEEFY in the Elston Supports UK Financial Advisers Handicap (3.45).
