World's best: Riyadh hospital completes 10 kidney transplants in 48 hours
RIYADH: The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre this week set a world record by performing 10 kidney exchange transplants in just 48 hours. The achievement coincided with World Organ Donation Day, which falls on Aug. 13 and aims to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation. Dr. Ehab Abufarhaneh, deputy executive director of the hospital's Organ Transplant Center of Excellence, told Arab News: 'KFSHRC performed the kidney exchange transplants over two consecutive days setting a global record. This happened with a great team led by Dr. Khaled Almashary and Ali of the department of kidney and pancreas transplant. 'This initiative opens a door for many patients who have no suitable donor.' The KFSHRC said the record was for the highest number of such procedures conducted within a two-day span at a single center. 'This milestone reinforces the hospital's position as a global leader in organ transplantation. It also reflects its high clinical readiness, the seamless coordination of its multidisciplinary medical teams and the advanced systems for managing donor-recipient matching, alongside its extensive experience in executing complex transplant procedures,' it said. Paired kidney transplantation is an innovative approach where two or more incompatible donor-recipient pairs swap kidneys to achieve compatible transplants. The process significantly improves compatibility rates and offers hope to patients who face challenges in finding a suitable match within their families. Last year, the KFSHRC celebrated another milestone with the completion of its 500th transplant since the program was launched in 2011. Since the creation of its organ transplantation program in 1981, it has successfully performed more then 5,000 kidney transplants, placing it among an elite group of global transplant centers. Last year it conducted 80 pediatric kidney transplants, more than any other facility in the world for the period. By leveraging its skilled workforce, advanced technologies and the integration of research and clinical programs, the KFSHRC aims to deliver world-class treatment while enhancing the Kingdom's position as a leader in organ transplantation. In 2023 and 2024 it ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa region and 15th globally on the list of the world's top 250 academic medical centers and was last year recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in the Kingdom and the Middle East by Brand Finance rankings. It also ranked among the world's 250 best hospitals in 2024 and was included in Newsweek magazine's list of best smart hospitals for 2025.

On World Organ Donation Day KFSHRC announces 10 kidney exchange transplants completed in 48 hours
Riyadh: King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) successfully performed 10 kidney exchange transplants over two consecutive days, setting a global record for the highest number of such procedures conducted within a two-day span at a single center, coinciding with World Organ Donation Day on August 13. This milestone reinforces KFSHRC's position as a global leader in organ transplantation. This accomplishment reflects the hospital's high clinical readiness, the seamless coordination of its multidisciplinary medical teams, and its advanced systems for managing donor-recipient matching, alongside its extensive experience in executing complex transplant procedures. All of these factors enable KFSHRC to carry out this type of exchange transplantation with precision and within an exceptionally short timeframe. Paired kidney transplantation is an innovative approach that matches donor–patient pairs for mutual exchange. In this system, each donor gives a kidney to a patient with whom they have no direct relation, while their own relative receives a kidney from another donor. The process significantly improves compatibility rates and offers new hope to patients who face challenges in finding a suitable match within their families. Last year, KFSHRC celebrated a major milestone by completing more than 500 paired kidney transplants since the program was launched in 2011. Since launching its organ transplantation program in 1981, the hospital has successfully performed over 5,000 kidney transplants, placing it among an elite group of global transplant centers. In 2024, the hospital conducted 80 pediatric kidney transplants, the highest annual volume reported worldwide. This makes KFSHRC's pediatric kidney transplant program the largest of its kind compared to leading centers in the United States and Europe. This remarkable achievement underscores KFSHRC's commitment to its vision of being the provider of choice for specialized healthcare. By leveraging its skilled workforce, advanced technologies, and the integration of research and clinical programs, the hospital aims to deliver world-class treatment experiences both locally and globally, while enhancing the Kingdom's position as a leader in organ transplantation. KFSHRC has been ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa and 15th globally in the list of the world's top 250 Academic Medical Centers for the second consecutive year and has been recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in the Kingdom and the Middle East, according to the 2024 Brand Finance rankings. Additionally, in the same year, it was ranked among the world's best 250 hospitals and included in the World's Best Smart Hospitals list for 2025 by Newsweek magazine. Rising Infertility, Medical Advances, Government Supports and Societal Shifts Driving Growth
The Saudi Arabia IVF market is projected to grow from $306.59 million in 2024 to $522.39 million by 2033, driven by a 6.10% CAGR. Factors like rising infertility rates, delayed parenthood, technological advancements, and supportive government initiatives contribute to this growth. The market segments into procedure types, instruments, and end-users. Notable players include FUJIFILM Holdings and Merck & Co. Despite growth, challenges like high treatment costs and cultural sensitivities persist. Recent advancements, such as the discovery by King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre, underscore ongoing innovations in the field. Saudi Arabian IVF Market Dublin, July 25, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The "Saudi Arabia IVF Market Outlook 2025-2033" report has been added to Arabia IVF Market is expected to reach US$ 522.39 million by 2033 from US$ 306.59 million in 2024, with a CAGR of 6.10% from 2025 to 2033 Increasing infertility rates, increased awareness, delayed parenthood, reproductive technology improvements, supportive government policies, increased medical tourism, higher disposable incomes, higher healthcare investments, improved healthcare infrastructure, and shifting cultural perceptions towards fertility treatments are some of the drivers of the Saudi Arabian IVF market. When it is difficult to conceive naturally, couples or individuals may have the medical procedure of in vitro fertilization (IVF) done to help conceive. To create an embryo, an egg and a sperm are joined outside the body in a laboratory. After fertilization, the resulting embryo is monitored before it is inserted into the woman's uterus in hopes of potential implantation and pregnancy. IVF is often employed to treat infertility caused by issues such as male infertility, blocked fallopian tubes, or unexplained infertility. To enhance the chances of a healthy pregnancy, the treatment may additionally include genetic testing, hormone therapy, egg harvesting, and freezing IVF market in Saudi Arabia is growing considerably owing to a variety of converging factors. Stress, lifestyle changes, and the rising age of first-time mothers are significant reasons for the high rates of infertility. Second, due to shifting social values and greater awareness of IVF options, there is greater societal acceptance of assisted reproduction. Treatment is becoming more appealing with greater success rates introduced by advances in technology such as genetic screening, freezing embryos, and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Market access is also supplemented by government initiatives, including subsidies and supportive healthcare legislation. In addition, Saudi Arabia's attempts to boost its medical tourism sector and enhance its health infrastructure cement its position as a regional hub for advanced reproductive Drivers for the Saudi Arabia IVF Market Delayed ParenthoodDelayed parenthood is one of the key drivers fueling the Saudi Arabian IVF market's growth. The first-time parents' average age keeps rising because more individuals and couples tend to prioritize their education, careers, and financial stability before having children. Delaying childbearing naturally reduces fertility, rendering IVF and other reproductive technologies more essential. This trend is being driven by changing social norms and greater acceptance of working women in Saudi Arabia. Lower reproduction rates are further linked to lifestyle and delayed marriages. Infertility treatments are increasingly being sought after with delayed motherhood gaining pace. IVF offers an effective solution, driving market growth as more people seek effective, scientifically validated solutions to age-related AdvancementsThe Saudi Arabian IVF industry is growing largely because of technological advancements. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), and embryo vitrification are some of the advanced reproductive technologies that have increased IVF success rates significantly and made them more reliable and accessible. Couples who are facing problems with infertility are increasingly interested in these advances. To further expand its presence in the region, Burjeel Holdings PLC, a leading provider of super-specialty healthcare services, made plans in September 2024 to introduce IVF services in Saudi Arabia. Their Trust Fertility Clinic at Burjeel Medical City (BMC) will integrate with gynecology, fetal medicine, and pediatric subspecialties and IVF. BMC provides women with a seamless, superior reproductive experience from conception through birth in one, cutting-edge facility by offering full mother and baby care through specialized NICU and PICU SupportThe growth of the IVF market in Saudi Arabia is largely attributed to government support, which aligns with the Saudi Vision 2030 objectives of enhancing the quality and availability of healthcare. The government has entrusted the licensing and regulation of fertility clinics to the Ministry of Health, ensuring that the requirements of safety and effectiveness are fulfilled. To reduce economic burdens and provide better access to care, the government also offers funded help for IVF procedures to qualified individuals. The IVF sector has been further encouraged through massive investments in health infrastructure, including the development of advanced fertility centers. These programs combined create a friendly environment for individuals in need of fertility treatments, which stimulates market growth and positions Saudi Arabia as a front runner in the field for reproductive in the Saudi Arabia IVF Market Cultural and Religious SensitivitiesThe Saudi Arabian IVF market faces considerable obstacles due to cultural and religious sensitivity. In a culture steeped in Islamic customs, several forms of assisted reproduction, such surrogacy or third-party gamete donation, are typically forbidden by Islamic law. Compared to other nations, these limitations restrict the variety of IVF therapies that are available. Furthermore, frank conversations regarding infertility may be discouraged by conservative social norms, which could cause stigma and emotional hardship, particularly for women. Access to care is further diminished when people are reluctant to seek treatment out of fear of criticism or social pressure. Campaigns for culturally sensitive education and awareness are necessary to overcome these Treatment CostsIn the Saudi Arabian IVF industry, high treatment costs are a significant obstacle that prevents many couples from accessing fertility services. Because of the sophisticated equipment, skilled personnel, and numerous treatment cycles that are frequently necessary for success, IVF procedures can be costly. Although there is some government assistance, it is not very extensive, and many private insurance policies do not cover infertility treatments. Consequently, families with lower and intermediate incomes might find it difficult to pay for care, which could cause treatment to be postponed or stopped. These financial constraints highlight the need for more comprehensive insurance coverage and reasonably priced treatment options because they not only limit access but also heighten emotional stress. Saudi Arabia's 'Sleeping Prince': What happened to Prince Al Waleed bin Khaled
After spending nearly two decades in a deep coma, young Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Khalid bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was declared dead by the Royal Court on Saturday, bringing a poignant close to a long-standing story of hope and endurance. A tragic accident in 2005 made the life of the 36-year-old prince's in limbo, and thus earned him the title of 'Sleeping Prince' for the 20 years he spent lying on the bed at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh. Over the years, any movement observed in the Prince's body made headlines, as many held onto hope for a miraculous recovery despite medical reports indicating otherwise. Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. Here's what we know about the late Prince's life: Early life Born in April 1990 in Riyadh, Prince Alwaleed was the eldest son of Prince Khalid bin Talal bin Abdulaziz, a member of the Saudi royal family and brother of renowned Saudi businessman Prince Alwaleed bin Talal and Princess Rima bint Talal. At the age of 15, Prince Alwaleed was involved in a car accident during his military studies, which caused a brain haemorrhage that put him into a coma from which he never regained consciousness, despite intensive medical efforts that included interventions by specialised teams from outside Saudi Arabia. No further details on the accident could be independently verified by Khaleej Times as of the time of publishing the article. Intensive efforts in the hope of any improvement in his case, including a visit by an international medical team composed of three American doctors and a Spanish one, went all in vain, according to Skynews Arabia. In 2019, Prince Alwaleed's aunt, Princess Rima, posted a video showing him moving his head saying, "The Protector, the Powerful, the Merciful, the Compassionate… Alwaleed bin Khalid moves his head from side to side. Praise and thanks be to God." Clinging to hope Prince Alwaleed's father never lost hope in his son's recovery despite everything and was quoted as saying that the prince's life could have just ended in the accident itself and that God is capable of curing him. On every occasion, the grieving father would go to his son's bed to pray and recite the Quran, wishing upon a miracle. اخÙذÙ اÙأعزاء ØÙظÙÙ اÙÙÙ Ø£ÙÙئÙÙ بÙÙاسبة ØÙÙÙ عÙد اÙأضØÙ اÙÙبارÙ سائÙاÙ اÙÙÙÙÙ عز ÙجÙ Ø£Ù ÙذÙبÙ ÙÙا Ù ÙÙÙÙ صاÙØ Ø§ÙأعÙاÙ ÙØ£Ù ÙعÙدÙ عÙÙÙا Ù عÙÙÙÙ باÙØ®Ùر ÙاÙÙÙÙ ÙاÙبرÙاذ Ù ÙÙ عاÙ ÙØ£ÙذÙ ÙÙ أذÙ اÙصØØ© ÙاÙعاÙÙØ© ÙأدعÙ اÙÙÙ عز ÙجÙ Ø£Ù ÙØ´ÙÙ ابÙÙ ÙØبÙبÙ اÙذاÙÙ عÙÙ ÙÙÙبÙا اÙÙÙÙدâ¦ — خاÙد بÙ Ø·ÙاÙ بÙ عبد اÙعزÙز ( أبÙ اÙÙÙÙد ) (@allah_cure_dede) June 5, 2025 Funeral prayers for Prince Alwaleed will be held on Sunday (July 20) after the Asr prayer at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh.
