King of Spain honours two men for work promoting historical links with Ireland

Two men have received awards from King Felipe VI of Spain for their promotion of historical ties between Spain and Ireland . Author and historian Michael Barry was awarded the Order of Civil Merit for his books on Spanish history. The book contains much new material about the tragedy that befell the Armada off the Irish coast. The next one is due to take place there on the weekend on September 26th and 27th. Thousands turned out on the streets of Valladolid to attend the mock funeral of Red Hugh O'Donnell, who was buried in the Spanish city in 1602 The awards were presented by the Spanish ambassador to Ireland, Ion de la Riva, at the ceremony in the ambassadorial residence on Tuesday. Mr de la Riva said Spain was the first country to sign a treaty with the Irish. In 1529, the Treaty of Dingle signed between King Charles V of Spain and the Earl of Desmond gave Irish people citizenship throughout the Habsburg Empire which ruled Spain and much of Europe at the time.

QNA Seville His Highness the Amir of the State of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met with HM King Felipe VI of Spain, on the sidelines of a dinner banquette held in honour of the heads of state and government participating in the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4), organised by the United Nations in Seville, at the Royal Palace in Seville on Sunday. At the outset of the meeting, HM King of Spain welcomed HH the Amir, expressing his gratitude for accepting the invitation. He affirmed that this reflects the great interest Qatar places in supporting development, pointing to the Fourth World Summit for Social Development, which Qatar will host in 2025. He expressed his aspiration to strengthen relations in light of the agreements and memoranda of cooperation signed between the two countries, and the importance of supporting joint bilateral investments through small and medium-sized enterprises. The king of Spain also reiterated his country's solidarity with Qatar and its strong condemnation of the Iranian attack on Al-Udeid Air Base, praising HH the Amir's role in facilitating a ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel. For his part, HH the Amir stressed Qatar's keenness to consolidate relations between the two countries and push them toward a more advanced level across all areas of existing cooperation, particularly in the cultural, educational, and security fields, in a manner that serves the common interests of the two friendly countries. The meeting addressed the main topics on the conference agenda, particularly ways to activate international cooperation to support and finance development. The meeting also discussed ways to strengthen the close bilateral relations between the two countries, as well as the latest regional and international developments of common interest. The meeting was attended by a number of members of the official delegation accompanying HH the Amir, and by a number of senior officials from the Spanish side.

LONDON: Qatari emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, met King Felipe VI of Spain in Seville on the sidelines of a UN-organized international investment conference. The 4th International Conference on Financing for Development began on Monday and will continue until July 3, bringing together global leaders to discuss urgent reforms necessary for financing sustainable development. King Felipe expressed his desire to strengthen relations and support joint investments through small and medium-sized enterprises following the recent economic agreements between Qatar and Spain. He also reiterated Spain's solidarity with Qatar and condemned the Iranian attack on Al-Udeid Air Base last week, praising Doha's role in facilitating a ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel. Sheikh Tamim emphasized Qatar's commitment to enhancing cooperation with Spain across cultural, educational and security fields to serve the common interests of both countries, the Qatar News Agency reported.

The banquet was attended by Secretary-General of the United Nations HE Antonio Guterres and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Spain HE Pedro Sanchez. The banquet was also attended by a number of members of the official delegation accompanying HH the Amir, and a number of members of the official delegations.

In a post on his official X platform, HH the Amir said, "I met King Felipe VI, along with several heads of state and government, at the official dinner for the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville, where we exchanged views on the global financing framework for sustainable development to achieve its goals of building a more sustainable, secure, and prosperous future for all the peoples of the world."
