The Brain Prize: HM The King of Denmark presents prestigious prize to US and German scientists for seminal discoveries in brain cancer
Two pioneering scientists received The Brain Prize 2025 for their discoveries that open an entirely new way of thinking about and understanding brain cancers, and the potential strategies to treat them. COPENHAGEN, Denmark, May 29, 2025 /CNW/ -- HM King Frederik of Denmark presented neuroscientists, Professors Michelle Monje (USA) and Frank Winkler (Germany), with their Brain Prize medals and a diploma at a ceremony in Copenhagen Wednesday evening. The Brain Prize is the world's largest award for outstanding contributions to neuroscience worth EUR 1.3 million. During the ceremony, HM The King gave a speech praising the two prize recipients for their discoveries: "Your achievements in cancer neuroscience are truly extraordinary. You are an inspiration not only to your peers, but to generations of scientists yet to come. Thanks to your tireless efforts, there is hope that one day all types of brain cancer can be cured." Monje and Winkler have made transformative discoveries by showing that the everyday activity that takes place in the brain drives the development of cancers within it. Recent studies further show that the influence of the nervous system is not only limited to tumours in the brain, but also tumours throughout the body. These remarkable findings have laid the foundation for an entirely new field of research called 'Cancer Neuroscience' that represents a paradigm shift in the understanding of these cancers, and which offers vital new opportunities for treatment. New treatments are critical since cancers that arise in the brain, particularly the ones known as gliomas, are extraordinarily difficult to treat, and are the leading cause of brain tumour-related deaths in both children and adults. The Brain Prize has been awarded every year since 2011 by the Lundbeck Foundation. The celebration takes place in Copenhagen, and this year 360 invited guests attended. Guests of honor were the prize winners and their families, as well as patron of the prize, HM The King of Denmark. The Brain Prize 2025 is awarded to: and Frank Winkler, MD, Professor of Experimental Neuro-Oncology, Heidelberg University, Heidelberg University Hospital, Department of Neurology, and German Cancer Research Center for: Pioneering Cancer Neuroscience: disease-driving interactions between the brain and brain tumours. Queen Margrethe of Denmark, 85, Discharged After Being Hospitalized for a Cold
Queen Margrethe of Denmark was discharged from the hospital on May 10 after being admitted days before for observation after contracting a cold The 85-year-old former Queen of Denmark has returned to her residence at Fredensborg Palace, according to the Danish Royal House The Queen's most recent public appearance ahead of the hospitalization was a May 4 peace service at the Church of Our Lady in CopenhagenQueen Margrethe of Denmark was discharged from the hospital on the morning of Saturday, May 10, after being admitted days before as a precaution for a cold. The Danish Royal House announced the recovery of the former Queen of Denmark, 85, over the weekend. 'Her Majesty is well and is now back in her residence at Fredensborg Palace,' the court said in a statement. She was initially admitted for observation on Thursday, May 8. The former Queen's hospitalization forced her to cancel a scheduled outing on May 8, a visit to the Sankt Lukas Foundation's 125th anniversary celebration. Queen Margrethe's latest public appearance ahead of the hospitalization was at a May 4 peace service at the Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen to mark the 80th anniversary of Denmark's liberation. The Queen abdicated her position in January 2024 on the 52nd anniversary of her rise to the throne, becoming the first Danish royal to voluntarily do so in almost 900 years. Her eldest son, now known as King Frederik, acceded to the throne later that month, and his Australian-born wife became Queen Mary. Everything went well, thanks to the competent health personnel, who took care of me," she said in part then. "Inevitably, the operation gave cause to thoughts about the future – whether now would be an appropriate time to pass on the responsibility to the next generation. I have decided that now is the right time." In 2023, the Queen made history as Denmark's longest-reigning monarch after decades of service. Read the original article on People

Queen Mary of Denmark shows off elegant summer style as she steps out for evening at the Royal Danish Academy of Music
Queen Mary of Denmark was the image of effortless elegance as she stepped out for an evening at the Royal Danish Academy of Music tonight. The wife of King Frederik X, 53, showed off her summer style in an all-white ensemble topped with a dusky pink blazer, perfect for the sun. She donned a sophisticated vest, cinched at the waist with a belt, and high waisted culottes for the outing. Adding a pop of colour with her accessories, the mother-of-four carried a pastel leather clutch and painted her nails a crimson red. Elsewhere, she added a fun flair with snake-print high heels. Mary wore her chestnut tresses in relaxed waves, opting for a glowy yet glam make-up look. The Academy, initially founded by composer Niels W Gade in 1867, is 'the eldest professional institution of musical education in Denmark and the largest with focus on classical music, with approximately 400 students'. Queen Mary is a 'Protector' of the institution. The Queen beamed and shook hands with attendees as she we was welcomed to the venue in Frederiksberg. It comes as earlier this week, Mary and Frederik beamed in the sun as they made the annual move into their summer residence at Fredensborg Castle. The couple, who usually stay in Amalienborg, Copenhagen, were all smiles as they took in the sunny weather and were welcomed by wellwishers as well as a brass ensemble. Frederik, 56, and his wife Mary were both delighted as they received a warm welcome to the palace's Chancellery House. The Queen was effortlessly elegant in navy trousers and a breezy blue button-down, teamed with a light white coat. She wore her hair down and opted for a smokey eye make-up look for the occasion. Elsewhere Frederik donned taupe chinos with a pastel blouse, topped with a checkered blazer. The couple appeared to bring their Border Collie, Coco, along, and looked to be in high spirits as they made their arrival. Mary held onto a bouquet of flowers as she and her husband both greeted members of the public, and enjoyed chatting. She donned a sophisticated vest, cinched at the waist with a belt, and high waisted culottes for the outing Taking to social media, the King and Queen wrote: 'When spring soon turns into summer, and the trees around Fredensborg Castle turn green again, the Royal Family will traditionally move their residence to the Chancellery House.' Fredensborg was built as a 'country seat' for Frederik IV and initially used in 1722, before being rebuilt and expanded. Now, it is often the setting for 'important events' for the family, such as weddings, anniversaries and birthdays. It's been an exciting few weeks for the Danish royals, who last month celebrated Princess Isabella's 18th birthday. The eldest daughter of Mary and Frederik enjoyed multiple events in honour of her celebrations, also posed for official photographs at Knight's Hall of Frederick VIII's Palace in Amalienborg. Isabella put on a dashing display in a vibrant orange ballgown, which was adorned with the Order of the Elephant and a miniature portrait of her father. The 18-year-old, who opted for a glowing makeup look, added a pair of turquoise and diamond earrings and a matching tiara. The caption read: '18 years ago today Her Royal Highness Princess Isabella was born.' 'The birthday itself is marked with the publication of the Princess's first official gala portraits. 'The princess is photographed in the Knight's Hall of Frederick VIII's Palace in Amalienborg, and on the portraits Her Royal Highness wears the Order of the Elephant with a star chest... and a miniature Order portrait of her father, His Majesty the King.' One day before Isabella's birthday, the Danish Royal Family shared a scrapbook of adorable intimate family pictures. To mark her milestone birthday, the proud parents posted an array of childhood snaps of Isabella and her family throughout various stages of her life. The royal family's Instagram caption read: 'Little glimpses from childhood to 18 years old. 'On the occasion of Her Royal Highness Princess Isabella's 18th birthday on Monday, Their Majesties the King and Queen share here a selection of memories.' These included an adorable snap of Queen Margrethe - who abdicated the Danish throne in January last year - holding her newborn granddaughter shortly after she was born. The former monarch was seen smiling as she looked down at Isabella while cradling her in her arms. Another sweet black and white image also showed a young Isabella smiling as she clutched onto her mother's back. A second endearing photograph showed older sister Isabella touching Mary's baby bump when she was pregnant with twins Josephine and Vincent in 2010. The couple also chose a picture of Isabella - who is called Bella for short in some of the scrapbook captions - and her late grandfather, Prince Henrik of Denmark, who passed away in 2018. The monochrome image showed the Princess wrapping her arms around Henrik, giving him a huge hug. The extensive post also included snaps of Isabella with her Australian Scottish grandparents on Mary's side. Mary's parents are Scottish, but they emigrated to Hobart, Tasmania, where she was born in 1972. Her mother, Henrietta Clark Donaldson, sadly passed in 1997 following complications from a heart surgery when Mary was just 25 years old. Her father, John Dalgleish Donaldson, remarried a British crime writer Susan Horwood, who writes under the name Susan Moody. Elsewhere, another picture showed a young Isabella swimming and spending quality time with her father, King Frederik. Other images showed Isabella from when was around five years old on family trips in Tisvilde, a seaside town in Denmark, and her feeding a horse - along with more recent snaps of her with the family border collie, Grace. Princess Isabella is expected to enjoy a private birthday celebration with family and loved ones to mark the occasion today. From this year onwards, Princess Isabella will also have her birthday added into the rotation of annual flag days, which are the official dates when the national flag is traditionally flown. In addition to celebrating at the lavish Royal Theatre's Old Stage in Copenhagen last Tuesday, Isabella also had an earlier party on April 11, which, according to Hello, cost a staggering £32,542.

Danish and Swedish royals to meet on Öresund Bridge
The Danish and Swedish royal couples are to meet on the Öresund Bridge, which connects the two countries between Copenhagen and Malmö, to mark the 25th anniversary of the bridge's opening. Advertisement King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark will meet King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden on the Öresund Bridge on July 1st this year to celebrate the completion and opening of the bridge in 2000. 'It is a pride and honour for us to bid the royal couples of Denmark and Sweden welcome to the anniversary celebrations of the Öresund Bridge,' CEO of bridge operator Øresundsbron Linus Eriksson said in a press statement. 'We look forward to celebrating this milestone and looking back at the years in which our countries have been joined,' he said. The Öresund Bridge opened in 2000 and is now used daily by thousands of travellers and commuters. Consisting of a bridge, a tunnel and the artificial island Peberholm, the connection has a total length of 15.9 kilometres. The royals from the two countries are set to meet on the Swedish side of the bridge on July 1st, before driving in convoy across the connection, stopping at Peberholm in the middle of the Öresund Strait. Advertisement The event recalls the inauguration of the bridge on July 1st, 2000, when the then-regents of both countries also met on Peberholm. In August 1999, when the final part of the structure was completed, the then-Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria met on the suspension bridge. The Öresund Bridge connection is a vital element of growing regional ties between Denmark and Sweden and particularly the Copenhagen and Skåne regions.

These 2 Royals Nearly Passed for Locals in Surprisingly Candid Photographs
Queen Mary and King Frederik of Denmark were so unrecognizable during their latest trip that they nearly passed as locals. The royal couple recently embarked on a state visit to Finland, where they did everything from meeting with officials to skiing with the Finnish president, Alexander Stubb, and his wife, Suzanne Innes-Stubb. They even visited a local restaurant and enjoyed live music, all of which was captured on camera. In the first photo, Queen Mary and King Frederik are nearly unrecognizable in head-to-toe-winter gear as they pose in front of a reindeer. It's followed by footage of the couple riding in a sleigh, along with a candid video from the restaurant. The translated caption read, 'The state visit to Finland starts tomorrow, but already today we have enjoyed the magical Finnish landscape in Saariselkä in Lapland.' It continued, 'Together with the Presidential couple, we have experienced the Finnish nature as it should be with cross-country skis under our feet. We look forward to starting the official visit tomorrow and getting up close to some of what Finland has to offer in the coming days.' As I previously mentioned, Queen Mary and King Frederik went on a skiing excursion with the Finnish president and documented the outing on social media. The translated caption read, 'Their Majesties the King and Queen visited Inari in Finnish Lapland together with the Finnish Presidential couple today. The official part of the state visit begins tomorrow, Tuesday, in Helsinki.' It continued, 'On Wednesday, the program includes a visit to Aalto University, a seminar on the green transition and a visit to the Coastal Brigade in Upinniemi. The visit will further strengthen the strong relations between Finland and Denmark.' These photos are priceless. Want all the latest entertainment news sent right to your inbox? Subscribe here.
