Learn about the magic of vermicast and nurturing your garden
HONOLULU (KHON2) — Jessica Higashi from the Oahu Master Gardener Program School and Mindy Jaffe, Operations Manager at the Magoon Wormery, joined Brittni Friedlander on Wake Up 2Day to share the sustainable and helpful details of vermicast for gardening. Traffic closures planned for King Kamehameha Day Parade 'Freshly harvested food from your own garden is more nutritious and tastier than fruit prematurely harvested and imported. Gardeners gain a sense of satisfaction from being self-sufficient and sharing produce with neighbors builds a great sense of community. If Hawaii residents come upon hard times economically or due to natural disaster, people be prepared to take care of themselves. You'll know what goes into your food, like organic fertilizers, pesticides, etc. if you grow it yourself!'Mindy shared what she specifically does to be sustainable through worms or 'worming', 'Vermicast is the end-product of worms digesting organic material. Instead of throwing away food items such as banana peels or pineapple rinds, you can feed them to the worms and compost. You can learn to make it on your own at the Second Saturday at the Garden event on June 14 at the Learn to Worm workshop given by Mindy Jaffe. Register on Eventbrite.' To speak with a master gardener, visit 'Master Gardeners' in-person at the Kapiolani Community College Farmers Market Plant Doctor table on the last Saturday of every month (first tent near the entrance), or walk-in to Urban Garden Center classroom on Wednesdays 9 – noon.
