Final Fantasy fans have been saying character's name wrong for over two decades

Final Fantasy fans have been left baffled after realising they've been saying one of the main characters' names incorrectly for over two decades Final Fantasy is one of the most successful video game franchises in history, boasting a staggering 16 numbered entries in the main series along with a plethora of spin-off games, films, anime, manga, and novels. Predominantly an anthology series, each main game presents a unique plot and centres on a distinct cast of characters, though several recurring elements maintain a connection between the Square Enix franchise entries. ‌ Given the sheer number of characters to remember, it's hardly surprising that even the most devoted fans have difficulty with some of them. Indeed, there's one character in particular that some Final Fantasy enthusiasts are only now realising they've been mispronouncing since his game was launched - more than two decades ago. ‌ Final Fantasy X, released in 2001, follows the protagonist Tidus as he embarks on an adventure with a summoner named Yuna and her guardians Wakka, Auron, Luna, Kimahri, and Rikku. ‌ However, at the beginning of the game, players can rename Tidus to any name they choose, meaning his default name is never spoken aloud by other characters. And now, 24 years after the release of Final Fantasy X, fans are just discovering they've been pronouncing it incorrectly. A TikTok video posted by a Final Fantasy enthusiast has revealed that Tidus' name should be pronounced "Tee-dus", despite countless fans spending over twenty years calling him "Tide-us". The content creator explained this stems from the original Japanese name meaning "sun", which clarifies why the character wields the Sun Sigil within the game. The fan said: "Did you know that the name of the lead protagonist in Final Fantasy X is pronounced 'Tee-dus'? In Katakana, it's pronounced 'Tee-da', which is Okinawan for sun. That's why he has the Sun Sigil. Because his name is Sun." However, it appears the clarification isn't quite so straightforward. The character appears in the Kingdom Hearts series, where other characters speak his name aloud, and they pronounce it in two contrasting ways. ‌ One viewer highlighted: "In Kingdom Hearts, Wakka pronounces it 'Tee-dus'. But in Kingdom Hearts II, Selphie pronounces it 'Tie-dus'." Another viewer alleged that in a video examining the 2013 remaster of Final Fantasy X, the game's creators confirmed they "never settled on an English pronunciation" of the name. Others declared they would simply refuse to stop calling him "Tide-us", as water plays such a prominent role in his narrative, connecting to the "tide" concept. ‌ They also maintain the alternative pronunciation simply "sounds better". One wrote: "I'll be deep in my cold grave before I recognise Teedus." Another stated: "I know this is true, but I choose to deny it, and no one can make me change." The discussion surrounding the correct pronunciation of Tidus' name has been reignited amidst whispers of a potential Final Fantasy X remake, following the triumph of the Final Fantasy VII remake. Although Square Enix has not officially announced a remake, speculation suggests that the game could be launched next year to mark the 25th anniversary of the original release.

Happy Birthday, Donald Duck: The feisty duck's quirky journey into our hearts

Screengrabs from The Wise Little Hen (l), and Orphan's Benefit (r) Donald first appears on June 9, 1934 in The Wise Little Hen His iconic voice comes from Clarence Nash's buccal technique He starred in more Disney shorts than any other character On a humid summer day on June 9, 1934, a new kind of animated star waddled into view. Six years after Mickey Mouse's debut, it was the turn of Donald Duck. He first met his audience in The Wise Little Hen where he annoys a hen by faking a stomach ache to dodge work. That cheeky first glimpse set him on a path to become one of Disney's most unforgettable characters. Donald's first TV appearance is just seven minutes long, but his unique personality shines through. His appearance, supporting the hen, alongside Peter Pig, nearly steals the show with his iconic squawk and feigned laziness. The message is clear: work hard or castor oil awaits! A ROGUE WITH A UNIQUE VOICE Donald Duck was created by Walt Disney as a foil to Mickey Mouse -- someone with a bit more edge. While Mickey was cheerful and composed, Walt wanted a character who could get frustrated, throw tantrums, and express more human flaws. What makes Donald so compelling isn't just his sailor suit or his temper -- it's how he sounds. Clarence 'Ducky' Nash lent his unique, near-incomprehensible voice, the kind that blended irritation and charm in equal measure. Nash used buccal speech (creating sounds using cheek movements), and Walt Disney instantly knew: 'That's our talking duck.' That voice stayed Donald's signature for decades. Donald's sailor outfit and fiery temper were designed to set him apart, making him more unpredictable and comically relatable to audiences. After Clarence Nash passed away, American animator and voice actor Tony Anselmo took over as the official voice of Donald Duck from 1985. Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link cancelled, but there's a silver lining for fans

Kingdom Hearts fans are witnessing one door closing and another opening up — literally. Square Enix has announced that Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link, the mobile spin-off title that was being developed for Android and iOS, has been cancelled. The company made the announcement in a statement shared on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday explaining its decision to cancel the game, which was set in Master Xehanort's hometown of Scala ad Caelum between the events of Kingdom Hearts Union Cross and Kingdom Hearts Dark Road. Square Enix said it would be hard to serve up a Kingdom Hearts live-service game that fans would enjoy for a long time despite its best efforts to fine-tune its development and hold multiple closed beta tests, causing the game to be delayed more than once. The release of Missing Link was last delayed to the end of 2024, but that has since passed. Recommended Videos The statement reads in part, 'We have made the decision to cancel the development of Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link. We wish to convey our heartfelt apologies to everyone who has been looking forward to the start of service. Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by lots of players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development.' An important announcement regarding KINGDOM HEARTS Missing-Link. — Official KINGDOM HEARTS Missing-Link (@KHMLink_NA) May 14, 2025 The rest of the statement reveals a silver lining that Kingdom Hearts 4 is still in development. The sequel to Kingdom Hearts 3, which would kickstart The Lost Master Arc, was announced alongside Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link during the franchise's 20th Anniversary event in Japan on April 10, 2022. However, Square Enix only released the announcement trailer, which finds Sora taking on a real-world form (sort of) in a city inspired by modern-day Tokyo, and went radio silent on updates for the game for the last three years. Kingdom Hearts 4 has yet to receive a release date.

Square Enix cancels Kingdom Hearts mobile game

Square Enix has announced that it is cancelling the mobile spinoff Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link. In a statement on the game's website, Square Enix apologized to fans who were anticipating the game. The announcement also mentioned that Square was still hard at work on Kingdom Hearts IV perhaps to allay fears that this cancellation might indicate problems for other games in the sprawling Disney video game series. Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link was announced in 2022 alongside Kingdom Hearts IV. It was billed as a mobile action game that made use of GPS technology to give players the ability to 'travel the world without stepping outside,' according to one trailer. However, apparently that goal was a bit too lofty as Square Enix wrote, 'We determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development.' Square Enix's statement provided insight as to the reason for a game's cancellation – something most game studios do not often offer. And while making any game is a miracle, making a successful live-service game is like asking for lightning to strike the head of a pin in a forest. After all, how many live-service games (some of them even made by Square Enix itself) were released only to die shortly thereafter while the concurrent player counts for Fortnite, Roblox, and Call of Duty remain largely unmoved. So it's a rare and refreshing bit of honesty, especially in an industry as opaque as game development, that Square Enix was willing to name the reason for cancelling Missing-Link and I hope more studios follow suit in the future. But it's not all bad news for Square Enix. As reported by Gematsu, Square has also started a new partnership with the Tokyo Broadcasting System Television. Known as TBS, it's a Japanese TV and media company which produced Takeshi's Castle – an internationally popular physical competition show known in the US as Most Extreme Elimination Challenge or MXC. TBS started its own games division in 2023 and with Square Enix, the two companies will work on a new gaming property.
