The Transformative ‘Tollbooth'
Looking for a book in my study recently, another caught my eye: 'The Phantom Tollbooth,' Norton Juster's children's novel. The classic, illustrated by equally gifted cartoonist Jules Feiffer, achieved the impossible for preadolescent me. Through master-class wordplay and drawings, it made learning cool.
Milo, a bored boy, is transported through a magic tollbooth to Lands Beyond and a divided Kingdom of Wisdom, which can be restored to harmony only by the return of banished princess-sisters Reason and Rhyme. He accomplishes the rescue.
