Bear steals 3-gallon tub of ice cream from Lake Tahoe business
KINGS BEACH — A North Lake Tahoe ice cream shop got an unexpected visitor. The store owner captured video of the bear after helping itself to an entire tub of ice cream. Beth Moxley owns Tahoe Time Ice Cream in Kings Beach. She says she's seeing more bears now than ever before. She captured the aftermath of this latest encounter, which happened in April, on her cell phone. Moxley says it was snowing at the time and business was slow, so she took advantage of that and was doing a deep clean of the store. She went away for a moment, and that's when the bear, nicknamed Cinnamon, took the opportunity to sneak inside and steal a three-gallon tub of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. Cinnamon was only caught after going back for seconds. Moxley has lived in Tahoe for about 40 years and says bears are becoming more brazen and are less afraid of people. "It's like a huge influx of smaller bears. They're like teenagers running wild," she said. "They're fighting to survive, and a lot of them don't make it. So I think their hunger overrides their fear of humans." While Moxley says the bears haven't been aggressive, she's worried about the summer season, with more people being in the area. The Bear League of Tahoe says there has been an increase in encounters, which is why the organization is urging people to secure food and trash, keep doors and windows locked, and scare these animals off with loud noises.

Wildlife officers free bear cub tangled in Tahoe soccer net
( — The California Department of Fish and Wildlife received a call about a bear cub being tangled in a soccer net on Thursday morning. According to CDFW, the bear was tangled at a Kings Beach park at Lake Tahoe. When crews arrived at the scene, they found the cub stuck and was closely guarded by its protective mama bear. Daniel Serafini murder trial begins Monday in Auburn After some teamwork, crews were able to loosen the net and make sure the mom gave them a safe space they needed to work, stated CDFW. Wildlife officers and biologists were able to safely free the cub in just five minutes. 'The little one darted up a nearby tree, and after a quick reunion, both bears wandered peacefully back into the wild,' said CDFW. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Rapist storms out of court before sentencing
Just as proceedings were about to start in the Gqeberha high court on Wednesday morning, convicted rapist Moses Gqesha bizarrely stood up in the dock and walked back down the stairs to the holding cells. Moments earlier, as the judge entered the court to hear argument in mitigation and aggravation of sentence, a court orderly walked over to Gqesha to get him to sit upright. But Gqesha stood up, and with a dismissive gesture to the judge, he walked out. The court was then forced to adjourn as those seated in the public gallery erupted in disbelief. Gqesha was found guilty in March of raping Johannesburg businesswoman Andy Kawa multiple times in an all-night ordeal at Kings Beach in December 2010. This is a developing story. The Herald

Kings Beach's Minderon breaks SA record as pool champs wrap up in Gqeberha
Competing alongside younger athletes, Van Niekerk's time placed him among the top finishers in the Open division — a testament to his enduring speed and skill. The final team standings saw Clifton Lifesaving Club rise to the top of the leaderboard with 572 points, followed by Big Bay Lifesaving Club (360) and Kings Beach (317) in a strong showing from host and surf-based clubs. 'It's been an incredible few days in the pool. Bryce's performance, along with others like Barjo's, shows the incredible depth of talent developing in South African lifesaving,' said Craig van Rooyen, Director of Sport for Lifesaving South Africa. 'Records are falling, clubs are stepping up, and the future of this sport is in great hands.' Athletes competed across a full programme including obstacle swims, rescue medleys, manikin tows, and relays — testing both technical skill and physical endurance. Significantly, coastal clubs like Clifton, Big Bay, and Kings Beach continued to make their presence felt in pool competition, a space historically dominated by Gauteng-based teams. This shift highlights a new chapter in South African lifesaving, with clubs pushing for excellence in both surf and pool disciplines. With pool events concluded, focus now shifts fully to Kings Beach, where the Junior and Senior Surf Championships will bring the championships to an exciting close. — Lifesaving SA
