Brooklyn woman shot in buttocks from stray bullet on way to market: ‘Right now, I'm in pain'
It could have been worse, but for a Brooklyn woman struck by a stray bullet while on her way out to shop for groceries, it was bad enough. 'I heard the shot and felt it,' said Vivette Morris, 65, who was shot in the buttocks on July 13 as she pushed a shopping cart outside her home in East Flatbush. 'I thank God it didn't hit me in the head and kill me.' Morris, who lives in the Flatbush Gardens housing complex, was on her way to a Nostrand Ave. meat market to pick up something for Sunday dinner when shots suddenly rang out around 10 a.m. near Foster and Brooklyn Aves. Cops said the shooter fled in a black BMW east on Foster Ave. No arrests have been made. The victim was an unintended target, police said. Cops recovered 10 shell casings from the scene as they investigated the shooting. 'I heard multiple shots, and I was trying to get out of the way — and when I got hit I still heard shots firing,' Morris said. 'There were kids in the courtyard. The kids don't know what's going on. The government has to look into it.' Medics rushed Morris from the scene to Kings County Hospital. Doctors there told her the bullet cracked a bone and she will need to use a walker to get around. Doctors haven't taken out the bullet and are expecting it to eventually come out on its own, Morris said. 'God was covering that lady,' said a neighbor who came to Morris' aid after the shooting. 'She had a shopping cart. She was going to the store, just going on about her business, and then that happens.' 'I went over there to help her,' the neighbor said. 'It seemed like the bullet ricocheted off her. She was crying and me and this other man tried helping her up. I told her she's going to be fine, there's no blood. But I can't imagine the mental pain that woman was in.' That same day in Queens, a frightened mother woke up to find that a stray bullet had whizzed through her Jamaica home. The 68-year-old woman said the shot, meant for somebody else, shattered the first-floor window of the two-family house where she lives with her son. 'I'm scared, and I'm worried,' said the mom, who noted that her son was up and about around 2 a.m. when the bullet penetrated the window and a couple walls. 'It's very bizarre,' she said. 'It could have been a direct hit to my son. My son may not have been alive today. I don't know, I don't have any enemies. I don't know where this would come from.' After the bullet came through the window, it traveled about 20 feet and pierced two walls. 'I saw a hole going through my wall,' she said. 'Between the wall in my place and bedroom there is a staircase that goes upstairs. I went upstairs to see what was there, then I saw the exit part of the hole and another entrance of the hole going into the bedroom.' 'When my son — he goes to bed late — was in the kitchen at the time, he said he heard two bangs,' she said. 'He did duck down. He said when he heard the shots that it was close and it drew his attention but he didn't look through the window to see what was there.' Nearly 24 hours earlier, Dwayne Belfield was fatally shot in the chest near Liverpool St. near Glassboro Ave. in South Jamaica. Video obtained by ABC Channel 7 Eyewitness News showed a dark-colored BMW slow down at the intersection as the killer unleashes a hail of bullets from the back seat before the luxury car speeds off. Belfield ran several feet before collapsing on the sidewalk about 8:15 a.m. July 12. It was unclear if that slaying is connected to the Brooklyn stray-bullet shooting, but both shooters escaped in a dark-colored BMW. On April 29, 17-year-old Coney Island teen Tamari Carmona was fatally shot in the head at the Flatbush Gardens complex and died a week later. In that tragic death, three men dressed in black confronted Carmona and one of them pulled out a pistol and opened fire, striking Carmona in the head before all three ran off toward New York Ave. 'He was pretty much brain-dead the whole time,' Tamari's cousin Kaliyah Serrano, 21, said after his death. 'We all spoke to him, told him how much we loved him, told him that he's a fighter, that he could fight this. We prayed for him.' The stray bullet shooting happened days after the NYPD announced that New York City had recorded its fewest number of shooting victims in three decades — and the second-lowest murder rate — in the first half of 2025.

Brooklyn daughter after mother is struck by stray bullet: "I do feel unsafe here"
A 65-year-old woman was hit by a stray bullet while walking to the store in broad daylight in Brooklyn. Police are still looking for the shooter. "I had a chance to see her. She's doing OK, she's pulling through," the victim's daughter told CBS News New York. She spoke through her door, too frightened to show her face. She said her mother was walking to get groceries just after 10 a.m. Sunday near Brooklyn Avenue and Foster Avenue when she was shot. "She was going to the store, and she said she just felt her leg give way. She realized she got shot. She started screaming she got shot," the woman's daughter said. "They don't want to paralyze her" The woman was rushed to Kings County Hospital. Her daughter said she was awake, but that the bullet was lodged near her hip. "Close to the hip. That's why they can't remove the bullet. They don't want to paralyze her," she said. Witnesses told CBS News New York the gunman was standing in front of a community center and fired down the street. He took off in a black BMW, police sources said. "She said she didn't see because her back was turned. She didn't see anything," the woman's daughter said. Ten shell casings were found at the scene. Police sources said they're still searching for the suspect, who was dressed in a light blue sweatshirt. As the woman recovers, her daughter said she's scared to even step outside. "I do feel unsafe here, because there's always shooting," she said. BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, Brooklyn (PIX11) — The NYPD is investigating a shooting that happened at a NYCHA building in Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon. The incident happened around 4:45 p.m. at the Brevoort Houses at 1831 Fulton Street. More Local News A 16-year-old was shot in the stomach inside the building, according to the NYPD. The victim was taken to Kings County Hospital in stable condition. The NYPD has not released any information about the suspect. Investigations are ongoing. Pregnant woman, 32, mowed down by hit-and-run driver after late-night fender bender in NYC: police
A 32-year-old pregnant woman was struck and dragged to her death by an SUV after getting into a late-night Brooklyn fender bender with the hit-and-run driver — who remains on the loose, police said Sunday. The tragic motorist, identified by police as Tiffany Cifuni, allegedly got out of her 2021 Toyota 4Runner to check for damage after a minor collision with a 2016 Chevy Trax at Van Buren Street and Marcus Garvey Boulevard shortly before midnight Saturday, according to police. That's when cops said the driver of the Trax gunned it and struck Cifuni from behind, dragging her before speeding away against traffic on Lafayette Avenue, a one-way street, an NYPD spokesperson said. But the driver's rampage wasn't done — police said the Chevy struck a parked Volkswagen SUV while trying to get away, and then slammed into a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 38-year-old woman behind the wheel. The crazed driver then got out and fled on foot, leaving behind the Chevy, which had temporary plates. Police responded to the scene following a 911 call and found Cifuni, of Long Island, unresponsive. She was taken to Kings County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said. Her heartbroken in-laws told ABC7 that Cifuni was in her first trimester of pregnancy and had shared the news with them that she and her husband James were expecting their first child just two weeks ago. The mom-to-be was coming home from the Beyoncé concert at MetLife Stadium when she was killed, according to the outlet. The driver of the Grand Cherokee was not seriously injured in that crash. The driver of the Chevy Trax remains on the loose, according to police. Additional reporting by Larry Celona.

Woman in Brooklyn fender-bender fatally run down by other driver after getting out of car
A woman who got out of her car after getting into a fender-bender in Brooklyn was fatally mowed down by the other driver — who then sped off against traffic on a one-way street before crashing into two parked cars, police said Sunday. The mayhem began when the 32-year-old victim's car was struck by a Chevy Trax driver near Van Buren St. and Marcus Garvey Blvd. in Bedford-Stuyvesant about 11:55 p.m. Saturday, cops said. When the victim got out of her car and approached the SUV, its driver barreled into her then turned onto Lafayette Ave., heading the wrong way down a one-way street to get away, cops said. The driver then crashed into two parked vehicles, bailed out and ran off, abandoning the SUV, which has temporary paper license plates. Medics rushed the victim to Kings County Hospital but she could not be saved. Her name was not immediately released. The driver who struck her has not been caught.
