Sibu Chinese leaders' association's 20th anniversary, 11th committee installation set for June 8

SIBU (May 31): The Sibu Division Chinese Community Leaders Association will celebrate its 20th Anniversary and the installation of its 11th Committee with a banquet on June 8 at 7pm at Kingwood Hotel. Its president, Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau, at a press conference yesterday, announced that Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian will be the guest of honour for the evening. He said the association has extended invitations to all government departments it collaborates with in fulfilling its responsibilities to the community., as well as all Sibu elected representatives. 'We anticipate having approximately 90 tables. We are still waiting for confirmation from some of the guests invited to the celebration. 'We hope that this celebration, in a way, serves to honour those who founded the association and to acknowledge their contributions. 'Additionally, it should serve as motivation for current leaders to aim for improved, more effective performance or contributions to benefit our community,' Lau said. He said that one of the goals is to foster stronger ties between community leaders and the association with the public. To enhance accessibility, Lau noted that the association has launched both a Facebook page and a website, allowing the public to easily identify and reach out to their respective community leaders. 'In the past, we received feedback from individuals who were unaware of the local community leaders in their areas. Therefore, I believe it should now be quite easy to reach out to the community leaders in the area. 'This celebration also serves as a means to promote awareness on what the Chinese community leaders are doing,' he said. He added that a short video will be screened during the celebration to showcase the association's journey and achievements, alongside various stage performances. The event, originally scheduled for last year, was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. Lau also addressed a minor issue encountered during the association's recent Annual General Meeting (AGM), where some individuals were inadvertently excluded from joining the new committee. 'It's unfortunate, and we are hopeful and optimistic that community leaders will continue to be as active and cooperative as they have been in the past. 'Our collective goal is to serve the community to the best of our abilities. We trust that any differences that may arise can be resolved. People shouldn't take it personally. 'And, you know, we need everyone, all community leaders, to collaborate, for the good of the community and the people in our society. 'As you know, community leaders act as a bridge between the government and the people. We'd like to see that we are able to perform this role effectively. So, it requires the cooperation of all the community leaders, to work together. 'Even though we have different political beliefs, different ideologies, we should not let that affect our unity and cooperation,' he said. Earlier, Lau mentioned that the association also works closely with both the District and Resident Offices on events requiring its support.

Inaugural Malaysia Deaf Summit 2025 to take place in Sibu this September

SIBU (May 9): Malaysia is set to host its first-ever Malaysia Deaf Summit 2025 at Kingwood Hotel here from Sept 26 to 28, under the theme 'Inclusive Futures: Advancing Access and Equity for Deaf Communities'. The event is organised by the Deaf Advocacy and Wellbeing National Organisation (DAWN) and hosted by the Sarawak Deaf Community Services Association, with support from Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak). Deputy Minister for Women, Children and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Mohamad Razi Sitam said the summit marks a significant milestone for Malaysia's deaf community. 'Since the founding of the Federation School for the Deaf in 1954, the deaf community in Malaysia has proven time and time again that they can achieve incredible things despite facing numerous obstacles,' he told a press conference here yesterday. However, he acknowledged that the deaf community continues to face exclusion, largely due to societal misconceptions rather than lack of ability. 'While the Persons with Disabilities Act 2008 is a crucial step towards inclusion, it is clear that more needs to be done. 'Many challenges persist, particularly the lack of consistent access to interpreting services across healthcare, legal, and education sectors, as well as difficulties with literacy in both Malay and English,' he stressed. He added that the inaccessibility of legal information further prevents the individuals from fully understanding and exercising their rights under Malaysian law. To promote inclusivity, Mohamad Razi said the ministry had introduced Malaysian Sign Language learning to children under the SeDidik initiative. 'As part of building an inclusive society, our ministry through the Sarawak Social Welfare Department has assisted 14,675 persons with disabilities through monthly assistance, with 3,445 of them able to work in different sectors.' The upcoming summit is expected to gather between 300 and 400 participants, with research papers to be presented over two days. Topics include 'Employment Creation Solutions for Deaf People'; 'Promoting Sign Language Rights and Strengthening Deaf Community in Indonesia'; 'Basis of Linguistics and Legal Transformation of Filipino Sign Language'; and 'Sign Language Interpreting Services in Thailand: Roles, Challenges, and Development Pathways for Deaf and Hearing Interpreters'. Additionally, Mohamad Razi also expressed his appreciation to BESarawak for their strong support in making the summit a reality. 'Their contributions have played a pivotal role in providing essential resources, expertise, and a collaborative spirit that have greatly enriched our efforts.' He added that the government is committed to ensuring that every Malaysian, regardless of their abilities, can live with dignity and have equal access to opportunities. 'The deaf community has already demonstrated their resilience, and it is now time for the rest of society to meet them halfway. We must work together to remove barriers and create a future where they can fully participate and thrive,' he said. inaugural Malaysia Deaf Summit 2025 Sibu

SIBU (April 26): Bilateral relations between Malaysia and Bhutan are set to reach new heights with the launch of the inaugural direct chartered flight between Sibu and Bhutan, scheduled to begin on Aug 25. The official signing ceremony for the agreement was held today at Kingwood Hotel, organised by Sak Soon Travel Agencies Sdn Bhd, the main driver behind the initiative. The non-stop service will utilise an Airbus A319 or an equivalent aircraft with a seating capacity of 126 passengers, operating round-trip flights between Sibu Airport (SBW) and Paro Airport (PBH) in Bhutan. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Sak Soon Travel and Bhutan Airline, represented by managing director Thomas Tan and general manager Ugyen Tenzin, respectively. Tourism Malaysia Deputy Director General (Promotion II) Samuel Lee, witnessed the signing on behalf of the Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) Minister Dato Sri Tiong King Sing. Reading Tiong's speech at the event, Lee highlighted the significance of the route in building a cultural and economic bridge between Malaysia and Bhutan. 'This collaboration clearly shows the commitment of both countries to strengthening the tourism sector, expanding trade opportunities, and fostering closer people-to-people relations,' the speech stated. Tiong said the new route would not only provide better travel options but also allow Bhutanese tourists to explore the cultural richness and natural beauty of Sarawak, while giving Malaysians an opportunity to experience Bhutan's spiritual heritage. He also noted that the initiative supports the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign, which targets 53.3 million tourist arrivals. In his remarks, Tan expressed confidence that the launch of the route would further strengthen ties between the two countries. 'This direct charter flight is not just a new route, as it is a bridge connecting two communities eager to learn from and grow with each other. 'With the expected increase in tourist traffic and business opportunities, we are confident that this partnership will bring long-term benefits to the people of Sibu and Malaysia's tourism industry as a whole,' he said. Also present at the event were Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng and Bhutan Tourism marketing chief officer Karma Wangdi. Bhutan direct flights lead memorandum of understanding tourism
