Exco: Perak to set up temporary shelters for strays amid rising abandonment cases

IPOH, Aug 13 — The Perak government plans to establish temporary shelters for stray animals to address the issue of abandoned animal populations. State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching said the state is working closely with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to identify suitable locations for the purpose. 'These shelters will be run by NGOs with the state facilitating the process at minimal cost, while we look for adoption centres and other solutions. 'The shelters will provide a place to care for stray animals, especially those involved in complaints. We hope more parties will continue to work with us,' she said at a press conference after officiating the 2025 Perak Pawsitive Initiative for the Kinta district here today. Earlier, the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim, graced the event's opening ceremony and visited the exhibition booths at the Malaysian Red Crescent Hall in Ipoh. Also present were the wife of Perak Menteri Besar, Datin Seri Aezer Zubin, and Ipoh Timur member of parliament Howard Lee Chuan How. Sandrea said the initiative is necessary as the growing population of stray animals is often linked to owners who do not neuter their pets, leading to unplanned litters and eventually abandoned animals that disrupt public order. 'As of April this year, the 15 local authorities in the state received 1,421 dog-related complaints, which shows the seriousness of the problem. The state hopes this awareness campaign will continue to gain momentum,' she said. She said the state government has conducted a subsidised neutering campaign, public awareness programmes through the Friends of Pawsitive Initiative platform, as well as photography and art competitions, and pet adoption drives to address the issue. As of June 23, 2025, a total of 301 dogs and 254 cats have been neutered, and 498 local authority licences have been issued under the initiative. — Bernama

Perak sees sharp drop in dengue cases, one death reported this year, says state rep

IPOH, July 31 — The Perak Health Department (JKN) has recorded 1,213 dengue fever cases with one death as of July 26 for this year, says State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan. He said the figure showed a sharp decline compared to the same period last year, which saw 5,058 dengue cases and nine deaths. 'A 68-year-old local man died on June 23 in the Tasek Industrial Area in the Kinta district,' he told a press conference after the pre-launch of the cloud-based clinical management system (CCMS) at the Buntong Health Clinic here today. Meanwhile, Sivanesan said 16 health clinics in the state had been identified for CCMS implementation this year. He said these included the Buntong, Jelapang and Greentown health clinics in Kinta, as well as the Simpang and Taiping health clinics in the Larut, Matang and Selama district. Sivanesan said the necessary information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure to support the CCMS operations had been fully supplied to all 16 clinics this year. — Bernama

(Bernama pic) IPOH : A storm in Ipoh this evening left eight houses at Lebuh Rajawali in Kampung Dato' Ahmad Said Tambahan 2 damaged, although horrified residents were largely unharmed. At Jalan St John, the roof of a garage collapsed on five people taking shelter there during the incident around 5pm, leaving one victim with a broken arm. The Kinta civil defence force said the storm led to the roofs of several houses being blown off by strong gusts, with residents making distress calls to first-responders. The Perak fire and rescue department said the storm also toppled several trees, with one crashing on a vehicle near the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital. Two people were inside the vehicle but did not suffer any injuries.

Roll Over and Die anime adaptation announced

Roll Over and Die Anime Adaptation Announced Get ready for some dark fantasy action with a heavy dose of yuri — ROLL OVER AND DIE : I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword! is officially getting an anime adaptation! The news dropped today alongside the release of the manga's seventh volume in Japan, with GC Novels confirming that a TV anime is currently in production. To celebrate, commemorative illustrations from original light novel illustrator Kinta, manga artist Sunao Minakata, and new novel cover illustrator kodamazon were unveiled. Sadly, no staff, cast, or release date announcements yet — so we'll have to be patient for those juicy details. A dark take on the "Banished from the Hero Party" trope For those unfamiliar, ROLL OVER AND DIE is a dark yuri fantasy series that's not afraid to get grim. It was originally written by kiki and first started as a web novel on Shosetsuka ni Naro back in 2018. Micro Magazine later picked it up for physical publication under their GC Novels imprint. Seven Seas Entertainment currently handles the English release for both the light novels and the manga adaptation. The story follows Flum Apricot, a weak girl blessed with a seemingly useless power called "Reversal." After getting betrayed and sold into slavery, Flum discovers that her power is actually far more dangerous — and the brutal journey to survive begins. Expect intense violence, body horror, and a lot of struggle as Flum and her companion Milkit fight for a sliver of peace in a twisted RPG-like world. This isn't your usual overpowered main character setup either. Flum's battles are messy, brutal, and hard-won. Despite having a "special ability," she's not magically steamrolling her enemies — and that raw, desperate tone is what makes this series stand out. Managing expectations for the anime Since the Roll Over and Die light novel series hasn't had a new volume in about four years, many fans weren't even sure if it would get an adaptation at all. So this announcement definitely caught a lot of people by surprise! Realistically though, we're probably looking at a 1-cour adaptation that covers the first one or two light novel volumes (maybe two or three story arcs). With that limited runtime, expectations for full story coverage should stay low — but hopefully, it will still deliver the dark, gritty vibe that made the original work so special. Plus, this anime announcement could finally be the push needed to revive the series and maybe bring us that long-awaited Volume 5. Either way, it's a big win for fans of darker, more brutal fantasy stories who don't mind a little blood and heartbreak along with their romance.
