Fires in Kawartha Lakes, Ont., have been contained
Officials say that the two active fires in Kawartha Lakes have now been contained. The Burnt River area fire and the Kirkfield area fire have been contained, now classified as being held, and are unlikely to spread under the current or forecasted weather conditions, the Ministry of Natural Resources said in the city's daily fire update. Hot and dry weather conditions resulted in four significant fires in the area in the past week, straining firefighting resources. In the statement, senior fire officials thanked fire crews for their efforts. "The scope of effort and dedication … has been immense," they said in the statement. The total fire ban across Kawartha Lake is still in effect. Kawartha Lakes Mayor Doug Elmslie said the fires continue to need significant resources. "Our fire service and partners have made tremendous progress under very challenging conditions, and I want to thank them for their dedicated efforts," Elmslie said in a statement Friday. "We all have a role to play in keeping our community safe," Elmslie said, urging residents to "please stay vigilant, follow the fire ban, and practice fire safety so we can build on the success achieved so far." The city is continuing to urge people to avoid fire areas and said closures remain in effect on County Road 49 between County Road 121 and Bury's Green, as well as along Prospect Road from 1304 north to 1375. If residents spot any smoke, the city says they're still being asked to call 705-324-2191 instead of 911.

Fire crews continue to battle Kawartha Lakes, Ont. fires
Fire officials say crews have not been able to contain the wildfire in the Kirkfield area of Kawartha Lakes, Ont. as hot weather persists, with no rain in area overnight. The Ministry of Natural Resources has been assisting the municipality with the roughly 33.5-hectare fire that has been burning out of control since it began on Monday, the city said Thursday in a news release. Dry and hot weather conditions led to four significant fires in the area in the past week. The fire in Burnt River is still active, but it's now classified as being held, officials say. In a statement, Kawartha Lakes Fire Service Chief Jeff Bignell thanked crews that have been fighting the fire that began last Saturday. "We sincerely thank all Firefighters, FireRangers, flight crews, emergency responders, Public Works and support staff for your assistance over the past several days. It has been a challenging operation, and we continue to work to suppress within the 27 hectare boundary," Bignell said. Additionally, a third fire in the Head Lake area, which is 4.5 hectares in size, has been classified as under control, the city said. The city is urging people to avoid the fire areas and said road closures remain in effect on County Road 49 between County Road 121 and Bury's Green, as well as along Prospect Road from 1304 north to 1375. If residents spot any smoke, they're asked to call 705-324-2191 instead of 911, the release said. The total fire ban across Kawartha Lake is still in effect.

In Kawartha Lakes, Ont., around 60 hectares of land are still burning
A total fire ban across Kawartha Lake is still in effect as two fires, in Burnt River and the Kirkfield area, continue to burn, the city said Wednesday in a news release. The fire in Burnt River, which began Aug. 9, is 27 hectares in size, while the Kirkfield fire began Monday and has decreased slightly from Tuesday afternoon to roughly 33.5 hectares in size, the release says. There are no significant changes to the two active fires, said Evan Lizotte, a fire information officer with the Ministry of Natural Resources during a news conference Wednesday. Firefighting resources in the area have been strained by four significant fires in the area in the past week. "The [Kirkfield] fire is still not under control," said Lizotte. "The [Burnt River] fire has been tied in, meaning … the fire's perimeter has been secured." Recent cooler temperatures and cloud cover are expected to help firefighters make progress, the city release says. It says evacuation is still not necessary, however road closures remain in effect on County Road 49 between County Road 121 and Bury's Green, as well as along Prospect Road from 1304 north to 1375.
