Elite U.S. Army parachuting team performs at Kirtland AFB for 2025 Air Fiesta

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Thousands of visitors crowded Kirtland Air Force Base Saturday to get a glimpse of one of the city's biggest aerial shows- Kirtland's 2025 Air Fiesta. It's been several years since the base has hosted the event, and guests were eager to see its comeback. 'For us on the base, it means a lot for the community of Albuquerque to participate and come out and kind of see all these types of demonstrations,' said Ruben Garibay, Public Affairs Specialist for Kirtland Public Affairs Office. Kirtland Air Fiesta and more Lots of practice and preparation went into this year's event, but there is one event that always draws a crowd- the U.S. Army's Golden Knights. 'What made me want to be a demonstrator is I went on a couple of shows, and just seeing the excitement they bring to the crowd, and just how much they inspire people,' said Shelby Guarnieri, a demonstrator for the Golden Knights. The Golden Knights are an elite parachute team and were one of many aerial teams to show off their skills this weekend. 'It's exhilarating and nerve-wracking all at the same time,' Guarnieri said. 'You are just constantly running through the maneuver in your head.' Shelby said she's served in the military for 13 years and spent time working in communications. However, after seeing what the Golden Knight could do, she decided to become a demonstrator. 'I wanted to do something in my army career that pushed me to do more than my comfort zone, and this definitely did that for me,' Guarnieri added. The team warmed up by running mock drills on the ground before suiting up and making the dive. And though this was her first year being a demonstrator, she's looking future jumps.'I try to get better every time,' Guarnieri said. 'It's awesome to be out here and represent the team in New Mexico.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Pilots practice ahead of Kirtland Air Force Base's Air Fiesta this weekend

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Precision in the sky. That's the goal this weekend at Kirtland Air Force Base, as their popular Air Fiesta returns after a long hiatus. Story continues below Crime: Albuquerque business owner faces murder charge for shooting fleeing shoplifter News: Las Vegas deputy charged with aggravated battery and robbery Business: A downtown Albuquerque shoe shine parlor is still serving patrons after nearly a century Events: What's happening around New Mexico May 30-June 5? Kirtland Air Fiesta and more After six years, Kirtland Air Force Base's Air Fiesta is back, and on Friday, they were out practicing for this weekend's event. 'You want to make sure that you've got your tactics down pat. You want to make sure that you know your routine is tight because this is the first air show in six years. You don't want to go out there and disappoint. We want everything to be perfect. We want precision out there,' said Chief of Media at the Kirtland Air Force Base Public Affairs Office, Robert Smith. Base officials said this weekend's event was two years in the making, and although the fiesta hasn't happened in six years, they hope, after this year, to make it every two to three years: a chance for the general public to see the Air Force in action. 'Not everybody gets to see these things on a day-to-day basis,' said Smith. From cargo planes to vintage planes, visitors can get an up-close look at powerful aircraft on the ground and in the sky. Smith added, 'For those of us on Kirtland, you see some of the cargo aircraft, but we don't see these fighter aircraft every day.' With demonstrations of how the planes refuel mid-air and some big performances too, including the U.S. Army's parachute team, the Golden Knights. The event is free to the public. Gates open at 8 a.m. and the event runs until 5 p.m. Visitors are asked to go to one of the park and ride locations, including the Isleta Amphitheater and Gateway Center on Gibson. 'All you do is park there, we get you here, have a great time, and then we'll bus you right back,' said Smith. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Kirtland Air Fiesta and more 'The Teacher Loan Repayment Program is a vital investment in our educators and their future. By alleviating the burden of student loan debt, we are showing our teachers that we value their dedication to New Mexico's students and communities,' said Public Education Secretary Mariana D. Priority is given to teachers in high-need positions, including those with endorsements and actively teaching in these areas: Bilingual education Early childhood education Special education Science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) Career technical education (CTE) In a low-performing school serving economically disadvantaged populations Awards from the program can be renewed for additional two-year cycles if the recipient continues fulfilling their teaching commitment. Teachers benefiting from the federal program can simultaneously benefit from this one as well. Higher Education Secretary Stephanie M. Rodriguez had this to say about the program. 'The state's Teacher Loan Repayment Program works to alleviate the financial burden of student loan debt, allowing teachers to focus on what is most important – educating our children,' said Rodriguez. 'New Mexico is committed to helping educators by providing them with the support and respect they deserve as they teach the next generation of New Mexicans.' Here are some guidelines provided by the department for gathering a well water sample: 'Let the water run for two to three minutes before collecting the sample Fill a clean glass or plastic container without any odors with at least a quart or liter of yourwell water If the home has a whole-house filtration system, collect the water at the well head beforeany filtration or softener systems, if possible Fill the container with water as close to the time of testing as possible' Residents are also asked to bring basic information about the well such as 'well depth, depth to water, well casing material (such as steel or PVC), well latitude and longitude, and distance from the well to the nearest septic tank or leach field system.' If someone can't attend the event, a family member or neighbor can drop the sample off as long as it has the owner's name, phone number, address and well information attached. Man accused of firing gun outside an Albuquerque pub is headed to trial

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – An Albuquerque man accused of firing a gun outside of a bar and threatening staff is now set to go to trial. Brandon Hovey appeared in court Friday morning and had his trial set to begin in June. Kirtland Air Fiesta and more Police say Hovey was in the Quarter Celtic Pub on Juan Tabo and Indian School in November 2024. Hovey is accused of being aggressive and inappropriate with a waitress. Surveillance video showed Hovey getting up from his table and walking toward a waitress who can be seen backing away from Hovey. Eventually, the video showed him sitting down but a few minutes later the manager brought him his food and asked Hovey to leave. Police say Hovey took out a gun from his friend's car and used it to hit the manager in the stomach. Hovey then shot four rounds into the air before running away. Hovey was later arrested a block away walking along Juan Tabo. The state was pushing Hovey to plea guilty to aggravated battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, both with a firearm enhancement, amongst other charges. Under that proposed plea deal, he would have been facing anywhere from 12 and a half to 20 years behind bars. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
