Bold predictions for Penn State football in 2025

Penn State's hype for the 2025 season is unlike any we have seen in previous years under head coach James Franklin. After a run to the College Football Playoff semifinal, the 2025 squad returns a roster built for another deep playoff run, and perhaps laying claim to a long-awaited national title. The anticipation for the new college football season in Happy Valley is about as high as it has been in quite some time. The staff of Nittany Lions Wire is taking time this week to share our season predictions for Penn State football with our picks for offensive and defensive MVPs, big questions for the team, final record predictions, and our bold predictions. Our bold predictions for the season are where we get things started. Here are our bold predictions for Penn State football in 2025. Christopher Sheppard: Penn State will be the best road team in the Big Ten this year. Last year, the Nittany Lions were a sterling 5-0 away from home, including a tough conference win over the Badgers and a thriller against USC in the Coliseum. This year, they get all of their toughest opponents at Beaver Stadium, with Ohio State their toughest road test. In fact, their first road game is not until Week 5, when they visit a rebuilding UCLA team. I would not be shocked if the only road blemish is their Week 8 matchup against the defending national champions. Other than that potential hurdle, look for the Nittany Lions to roll on the road. Sam Woloson: 2025 Penn State defense statistically outperforms 2024 unit In Tom Allen's lone season as Penn State's defensive coordinator, the Nittany Lions ranked seventh in yards allowed per game and eighth in points allowed per game. That's quite good, but I think the defense will be even scarier under new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. Knowles' 4-2-5 scheme matches the team personnel perfectly, and his aggressive use of three safeties complements Penn State's secondary well. There's plenty of star power to work with, including DT Zane Durant, DE Dani Dennis-Sutton, LB Tony Rojas, and S Zakee Wheatley. With Knowles' championship experience, this could be a truly elite defense. Toluwani Akintunde: Penn State finally wins the Big Ten this year. Not just makes it to Indy but actually brings the trophy home. Drew Allar steps into full beast mode and delivers a Heisman-level season. Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen remind the country they're still the best 1-2 punch at running back. But the real x-factor is the defense under Jim Knowles. Dani Dennis-Sutton is going to be a problem off the edge, and I think freshman Daniel Jennings is going to surprise people and work his way into the rotation. Penn State pulls off a win at Oregon, beats Ohio State in Columbus, and flips the national narrative. Andrew Deal: Penn State defeats Ohio State in Columbus The Nittany Lions haven't defeated Ohio State in nine years. However, if there is a team to end the streak, it'd be the 2025 squad. Penn State returns most of its talent from last year's roster while adding more pieces to the team on the field. However, it's the addition to the coaching staff that will help the blue and white get over the hump. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles joined Penn State after building Ohio State's defense into one of the best units year in and year out. Knowles has already been useful to both quarterback Drew Allar and offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki while installing his defense. The talent on the defensive side of the ball, in addition to Knowles' defensive scheme, could be the difference maker against the Buckeyes when they face off later in the season. Kevin McGuire: Penn State gets a signature win at Ohio State The odds are Penn State is due for a win against Ohio State, and a win in Columbus is also bound to happen at some point. Other than the 2017 season, this may be Penn State's best chance to check those two items off the to-do list. On paper, Penn State appears to have a more well-rounded team going into this season, and Ohio State has a few more things to figure out going into its national title defense than Penn State does. But the fact that this game comes later in the year means Ohio State has plenty of time to figure things out before the Nittany Lions come into town. If it's not going to happen this year, I don't know when it will. This Penn State team is built to give Ohio State a stiff challenge, and no team has played Ohio State so consistently close over the last decade and come up so short on so many occasions as Penn State has. The Nittany Lions are due, and it happens this November. Coming up next in our week-long Penn State predictions roundtable: Biggest question for Penn State in 2025

He ran the lucrative 'Tommy' drugs line even from a police cell - then fled to the Caribbean

A fugitive who fled to the Caribbean on the day he was to be sentenced for running the notorious 'Tommy' drugs line is behind bars after being extradited back to the UK. Nicholas Knowles, 32, from Ashton-under-Lyne, was the boss of the crime gang which ran the drugs line from 2013, supplying cocaine and heroin across Bury and beyond. At its height, the line was receiving a thousand texts and calls each week. Knowles, of Bowness Road, denied conspiracy to supply heroin and cocaine, but he was founding guilty following a four-week trial at Bolton Crown Court in 2018. READ MORE: Two Brit gangsters shot dead outside Costa del Sol bar READ MORE: Human remains discovered with cordon in place on street While on bail, he faked illness to avoid going to court for his sentencing hearing and then fled the country. He was handed a 13-and-a-half-year prison sentence in his absence. But today (June 2, 2025) Greater Manchester Police confirmed that, following an international manhunt, Knowles was captured in the Caribbean and extradited back the UK to face justice. He is now behind bars after being handed a further 34 weeks behind bars for his escape. Detectives shut down the drugs line by May 2015, a police operation ending in the four other gang members being sentenced after admitting being concerned in the supply of class A drugs. Knowles was said to be the boss, making key decisions and controlling the day to day running of the gang since its inception in September 2013. But his crimes began to unravel after he and another gang member were stopped in their car by police in January 2014. Officers seized £420 in cash and five mobile phones from the Knowles' pal. One of the devices contained a SIM card with a number for the Tommy line. A week later, police raided the address of a known drug user where cops found Knowles' associate as well as 32 wraps of cocaine and 60 wraps of heroin with a mobile phone and £230 cash. A debtors' 'tick list' was also found in the battery compartment of the phone. The following month, police stopped a car on Coronation Street in Radcliffe and, following a chase, officers uncovered cocaine, heroin, cash, another phone linked to the Tommy line and another 'tick list'. Among the photos on the device were incriminating pictures of Knowles, topless selfies. The Tommy line was available for business every day of the week and in one week alone, in April 2014, it received a thousand texts and calls, according to GMP. By June 2014 police arrested Knowles on suspicion of a 'domestic related offence' which resulted in him being recalled to prison for a previous crime. But when he was arrested he concealed a small mobile phone and, even while he was in custody at a police station cell awaiting transfer back to jail, Knowles continued to run the Tommy line business, right under the noses of cops. Messages uncovered from this phone later showed he was attempting to get associates to hide 'criminal funds' as he knew cops were onto him, according to GMP. He also sent a string of text messages to another Tommy line holder so the business could continue while he was in jail. Even while behind bars at Salford's Forest Bank prison, Knowles was able to keep in touch with his second in command, said the force. One text from Knowles said: 'If you get nicked and you have got that phone you're f***ed.' Knowles was released from prison in August 2014 and the Tommy drugs line 'came to life' again but with a new handset, according to GMP. Knowles was arrested again in a BMW along with another gang member following an 80mph police chase in September 2014. Drugs had been discarded during the pursuit but later recovered by a police dog. Another phone was examined and analysis revealed it was the fourth Tommy line. Other gang members pleaded guilty and were sentenced at Bolton Crown Court in December 2016 and January 2017. Following the bringing to justice of the gang's leader Knowles, Detective Inspector Ian Toole, said: 'We are pleased to report that Knowles has been in court to face justice at last after attempting to run away from the justice system, and has now been sentenced.'His actions and the actions of the crime group blighted our local community and exploited vulnerable people further afield.'On the day of his sentencing in 2014, he pretended to be ill and using this as an opportunity to flee the country which started an international manhunt to locate him.'No matter how much time has passed, we won't give up on finding you. We were assisted using our partner agencies to drag him back to the UK to face justice.'If you are a criminal that has fled the UK to live in another country and thinks they can enjoy a life of luxury, you can't, we will find you and bring you back to face justice. It is only a matter of time before there will be a knock at your door and you will be dragged back here to face justice.'

Three dead, one missing as thousands evacuated from flood zone

Knowles' daughter said in a statement that her father had urged SES crews to rescue a family with young children nearby and died before they returned. 'He passed as a hero, sending help away to save others,' his daughter said. 'We all couldn't be prouder of you, Dad. We love you.' Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he was 'devastated' to hear of deaths in floodwaters, saying the thoughts of all Australians were with the victims' families. Police have said they hold 'grave fears' for a 49-year-old reported to have walked into floodwaters. Severe rainfall of up to 300mm was expected in some areas, adding to the risk of flash floods, with about 9500 properties inundated. 'Unfortunately, the community will have to brace for more bad news,' NSW Premier Chris Minns said on Thursday afternoon. 'This is going to be a difficult few days and we're not out of the woods yet.' The NSW SES had 149 flood warnings and 37 evacuation warnings in place on Thursday night but some residents said they were not alerted before the floods became dangerous. James Larking and Kerri-Ann Gimbert said it took one day to lose their home of 14 years in Pampoolah, east of Taree. As the floodwaters rose on their property, the couple swam, neck-deep, to get their animals to dry land. 'We've lost everything, but we're alive, we're safe, that's the main thing,' Larking, 54, said. In past floods, the couple received warning alerts on their phones. This time, they received nothing. 'It just seems like we're forgotten out here,' Gimbert said Taree, where the Manning River has risen to a level never recorded before, experienced one-third of its annual average rainfall in the past two days and remained extensively flooded. Surinder Singh, a resident of nearby Wingham, was in Sydney when he found out his home had been destroyed by unprecedented flooding, after being deemed uninsurable two years ago. 'I've lost everything,' Singh said. 'I do have some friends and neighbours who aren't there [anymore], but told me that the house was completely covered.' In Kempsey, a levee protecting the town's central business district from the Macleay River was breached early on Thursday. Evacuation orders were in place for the town's central and eastern areas. 'We haven't had any loss of power or telecommunications, but people [are] running out of food and medicine, that is something we're worried about,' said Kempsey Mayor Kinne Ring. Evacuation warnings were issued to people in lower-lying parts of Port Macquarie, Nambucca Heads, Macksville, Bellingen and Wauchope. In the Hunter region, people were being evacuated from parts of Dungog and Paterson. The NSW SES said its teams had made more than 600 flood rescues. The heaviest rainfall was expected in Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Taree, Woolgoolga, Sawtell and Dorrigo. Simon Basile, 58, was taking his dogs for their daily walk on One Mile Beach near Forster when his friend spotted a dead cow in the surf about 300 metres from the shore. 'You could tell [it was dead], it was just bobbing in the ocean on the way in, the waves were pushing it in,' he said. Basile took a photo of the cow's tag to post on Facebook, hoping its owner would see the post. 'A lot of the farmers don't know what stock they have and what's been lost,' he said. Others replied that they had seen dead cows wash up on Tuncurry Beach and Back Beach. Heavy rainfall is expected to ease off on the Mid North Coast on Friday, but severe weather will start sweeping across the southern Hunter, Blue Mountains and the Southern Highlands, the Bureau of Meteorology's Steve Bernasconi said. Loading Bernasconi warned record-breaking river levels could peak again over coming days even as rain eases across flood affected areas. About 2500 emergency services personnel, including 2200 SES workers, are operating in the flooded regions equipped with more than 500 trucks, boats and helicopters. 'We are throwing every single thing we've got at this incident,' said Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib. Access to disaster funding has been activated at the state and federal levels. Supermarkets in evacuated towns remained closed while others operated with limited supplies, with the premier thanking customers for not resorting to panic buying. 'It means that we don't have helicopters having to fly in food as often as normal, and they can be focusing on flood repair efforts,' Minns said.
