Smile in Strides: Goody's® Pain Relief Encourages Runners to Harness the Power of a Simple Smile to Reduce Pain and Boost Performance
A new white paper exploring the correlation between smiling and pain reduction inspired a marathon activation that put a pep in the runners' step TARRYTOWN, N.Y., April 8, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Goody's®, the fast acting, over-the-counter pain reliever in single-dose powder form, is helping marathon runners Get to Good™ when they need it most. Through the launch of a new white paper and the debut of an activation aimed to surprise marathon runners around the country, Goody's® is pairing its powerful pain relief with the simple act that anyone can do to aid in recovery: smile. Goody's® published "The Science of Smiling & Benefits to Pain Relief," a white paper on how the physical act of smiling can have a positive impact on pain relief in athletes to demonstrate that smiling is scientifically proven to reduce pain. The white paper reviews a body of research and scientific literature spanning more than 20 years that indicates the act of smiling might offer an unexpected boost during moments of physical pain and exhaustion. The connection is both psychological and physiological: smiling activates the release of feel-good neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins, all of which play a role in reducing the perception of pain. To bring the research to life, Goody's® created Smile 20, a surprise engagement for runners that lives at the notorious "mile 20" of a marathon race, the mile where the body's glycogen stores start to deplete and runners' endurance hits a wall1. Smile 20 made its debut on April 6 at the Knoxville Marathon. Runners were photographed as they approached the 20th milestone, only to turn a corner and see their faces displayed in real-time on a giant digital screen with an AI-powered smile filter stuck in a toothy, infectious grin. The surprise sight triggered real, contagious smiles that, in return, helped them push through the inevitable wall. Even the data smiled: pace tracking on Goody's® runners showed an increase in their speed after passing the activation. See images from the Smile 20 stunt at the Knoxville Marathon here. "We're all about helping people fight pain when they need it most, and no one needs it more than a marathoner," says Frank Paukowits, Vice President of Marketing at Prestige Consumer Healthcare. "Beyond pain relief during their recovery, we want to show up for this audience with science and creativity. Smile 20 is our way of helping these runners keep going despite the pain—and after the race, when next-level marathon soreness hits, Goody's® will be right there as part of their recovery regimen to get them back to good." Knoxville marathon finish line captain inspiring students to run
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — For any runner, the goal is to make it to the finish line. The victory is sweet and so are all of the little things that come with it. It takes a lot of coordination to make the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon a success. Volunteers are spread out en masse, tending to the races from start to finish. Among the dedicated volunteers is the finish line captain, who not only ensures that crossing the finish line is a memorable moment but also fosters a love of running in the next generation. Relay team aims to break Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon record set in 2007 'I coordinate all the different tasks that make the finish line possible for all the runners. It's more than just stepping across a line,' said Becca Russell. 'We have volunteers in place that present the medals, that are organizing the medals, people ready to give you water, medical people there to assist you if you need that. And we have a lot of volunteers that just provide directions after a runner has finished an event.' Russell has served as the marathon's finish line captain for more than a decade. 'I love the finish line. It's a thrill to be there. I've been there 15 times at the finish line for the Knoxville Marathon. Each year I just look forward to the day coming back on the calendar again. It's like a family reunion. The celebrations that are happening are with family and friends, the stories that I get little bits and pieces of while families are waiting for a runner to come in. And then I start watching and waiting for that runner also.' Making sure your heart is healthy for the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon When Russell's not volunteering at the races, she's training and inspiring the next generation of runners as a physical education teacher at Sarah Moore Greene Magnet Academy. 'Yes, she gave us motivation. And yes, she's a fun teacher too,' said fourth grade student Deh'zion Jones. Most runners remember what sparked their love of the sport. 'It just gives me chills to see them come across and celebrating a success, something that was difficult for them that we've worked on during PE to increase our endurance, and to be able to do that with their families and their siblings, and come right across the line, and I get to be the first high fives,' said Russell. Running helps Morristown man shed 150 pounds as he aims to finish second marathon They are building their endurance for the one mile Covenant Kids Run, completing their 26.2-mile journey. 'My mama did track when she was little, and I always wanted to take up after my mom. So when I run, it makes me feel like I'm in my mama's shoes,' said fourth grade student Kiara Pipkin. And who knows? She might get to see 'Ms. Russell' at the finish line of the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon one day. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Relay team aims to break Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon record set in 2007
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon is just a few days away. Runners are getting their final training in including those running the four person relay. Since 2007, a course record of 2:55:00 has stood for the marathon relay. Lauren Roth, Katie Baksa, Eliza Dickenson and Liz Whelply are hoping to break that record during this year's race. Knoxville's relay is not spilt into equal lengths; first leg is 6.8 miles, the second is 6.1, third leg is 7.0 miles, and the final leg is 6.3 miles. Running helps Morristown man shed 150 pounds as he aims to finish second marathon 'I think the first goal is to have fun,' said Roth. Dickenson added, 'And to wear Bound. We are going to be representing team Bound, so cheering on our friend here. If we can run hard, piece it together, it would be nice.' 'We've been texting each other over the last month or so, saying 'Ok, are you getting your workouts in are we ready?' We know what pace we need to hit to get the course record but it's going to be hard,' said Baksa. The team will be wearing matching running sets made by Baksa's company Bound. 'That's one of my favorite things about my running friends and the running community as a whole. It's just a very positive, supportive group of people,' Dickenson said. 'It kind of makes you believe in yourself and makes you want to go after crazy goals or try crazy things and start stuff like a running apparel company, which is so amazing. Being able to support her in this way is exciting and fun.' Where to cheer on runners during the 2025 Knoxville Marathon The group has previously run 100 mile races in relay form, most recently in the Florida keys. They said this marathon course will be a lot easier for them. 'Oh yeah, that was also in Key West, very hot. This is just one leg versus like eight or nine,' they said. Come race day you'll be able to tell them apart from the rest of the runners. The group likes to wear matching colors and outfits. 'We like to match to, so that's kind of fun. We're going to get our nails done, all the same color, we'll wear all the same colors,' Dickenson explained. 'We like to say, 'look fast, feel fast, be fast,' our nails and our outfit will help.' What's the fastest Knoxville Marathon time ever recorded? The record pace is right around a 6:33 mile. The group hoping they can put it all together and take home a new record. Running helps Morristown man shed 150 pounds as he aims to finish second marathon
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — When the gun sounds on April 6, thousands of marathon goers will begin their quest to complete the 26.2-mile course that makes up the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon. For the men and women competing, each one brings with them a story of how they got to this point. This includes Morristown runner Wil Nelson. The 48-year-old will be competing in his second consecutive Knoxville Marathon. A huge accomplishment, considering just five years ago, he could barely run a mile. Making sure your heart is healthy for the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon 'I was 325 pounds at my biggest,' Nelson told 6 News. 'I was having breathing problems. I had sleep apnea at that point. And I knew that my life would be shortened if I didn't do something.' That's when Nelson says he knew he had to change his mindset. Part of that change, according to his trainer, was getting off the couch and running. A task that at first was easier said than done. 'You know, when I got to a 45-minute mile, I thought I had really arrived. I had really done something. And then a 30-minute mile I was on cloud nine,' says Nelson. But that was in 2020. Now, five years later, Nelson is running and competing in everything. From 5K's, half and full marathons, trail races and Ultra competitions, there appears to be nothing this now 168-pound sportsman can't conquer. 'You hit a mental block, a mental wall, and you have to find your own way to get past that and push past that to achieve what you want to achieve and go as far as you want to go,' said Nelson. 'It's a discipline. You really have to be self-disciplined to be a runner or to maintain anything. It takes discipline.' Where to cheer on runners during the 2025 Knoxville Marathon It's that discipline that has led Nelson to take part in his second Knoxville marathon this year. An event he admits he wasn't quite ready for a year ago. 'I really didn't prepare a whole lot for it,' Nelson confesses. 'I got to mile 20, which was right around Summit Hill, and I thought I may have made a mistake. I wanted to completely stop at that point.' To his credit, he didn't stop. He completed his first road marathon in a time of just over four hours and 33 minutes. 'It was about the experience last year. This year, we'll take it a little more seriously. I'm still going to have fun and enjoy it, but I have a personal goal in mind going into it, and so as long as I achieve that goal, I will feel accomplished.' How to watch the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon A big statement coming from a man who has already accomplished a lot in a relatively short amount of time. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
