NCAA transfer portal: Why James Franklin, Penn State football want a new linebacker now
STATE COLLEGE — Coach James Franklin has issued an advertisement for linebackers. The Penn State football head coach wasted little time after the Saturday Blue-White Game in stumping for all-talented, available linebackers to seek employment with his Nittany Lions, preferably through the NCAA transfer portal. Advertisement While the Lions may rely more heavily on using just two linebackers at a time this coming season under new coordinator Jim Knowles, they still have depth concerns. They lost middle linebacker leader Kobe King to the NFL. They also lost promising redshirt freshman Ta'Mere Robinson, who recently transferred to USC. They are thin in numbers, even more so with experience. They return starting material in Tony Rojas and captain Dom DeLuca and a bunch of unproven backups. When asked about his young linebackers after the Blue-White Game, Franklin praised two, Anthony Speca, who didn't come off the field Saturday, and Kari Jackson. Then he launched into his plea for more help there. "So if there's a linebacker out there who wants to come and be a part of our program and play for LBU, the most historic linebacker program in the history of college football, there's an opportunity here, to join the room and compete. Advertisement "We will look at that. I think we've got enough in the room, but to get through an entire season, if we get some injuries, it could get challenging. So we're going to look in the portal to see if we can find a solution." Penn State, meanwhile, landed its only transfer addition of this spring portal period a few hours before the Blue-White Game in senior receiver Trebor Pena. While the transfer portal closed to new entrants 14 hours before the Blue-White Game, teams like Penn State can still recruit players who have already entered. Also, players who have earned their undergraduate degrees can transfer at any time. The top transfer portal linebackers still available include Amare Campbell (from North Carolina), Andrew Simpson (Boise State) and Shay Taylor (Ohio University). Penn State linebacker Kobe King drafted by Minnesota Vikings in Round 6 of NFL Draft
Penn State linebacker Kobe King is looking to continue the Linebacker U legacy at the next level after having his name called in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Minnesota Vikings selected King with a sixth-round draft pick on the final day of the draft, using the 201st overall pick to select the Penn State standout. King took some time to become the steady contributor he had become with the Nittany Lions defense the past couple of seasons. King started 11 games for Penn State in 2023 and was named a team captain for the 2024 season, where he started all 16 games played by Penn State on its College Football Playoff run. King ended the 2024 season with 97 tackles with three sacks. He was named a second-team All-Big Ten player and declared for the 2025 NFL draft following the conclusion of the season. Advertisement King's twin brother, Kalen King, was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL draft. Now the two brothers, who played high school and college football together, will be division rivals in the NFC North. That should make for some interesting family gatherings! King is the fifth Penn State player to be selected in the NFL draft. He joins first-round draft picks edge rusher Abdul Carter (no. 3, New York Giants) and tight end Tyler Warren (no. 14, Indianapolis Colts). Fellow safety Kevin Winston Jr. was a third-round pick of the Tennessee Titans. Safety Jaylen Reed was picked up by the Houston Texans earlier in the sixth round. The lack of participation in the combine is not expected to harm Carter's overall draft stock, but it will be disappointing not to see him put up numbers against the rest of the field. Kobe King's time to shine Abdul Carter may not be participating in the workout portion of the draft, but Penn State linebacker Kobe King will hit the field in hopes of boosting his draft stock. King arrives at the combine viewed by some draft analysts as a mid-round type of player. The combine will be a chance to try convincing scouts he is worthy of a Day 2 pick.
