Seymour School District unveils brand new propane bus fleet, reducing cost and environmental harm

SEYMOUR, Wis. (WFRV) – School may still be out for the summer, but when Seymour School District students return to classrooms on September 2, they'll take a new ride to campus. 'We implemented propane into our fleet here in Seymour,' Kobussen Buses Owner Dan Kobussen said. U.S. Chemical Safety Board: Company in Wisconsin hasn't implemented 9 safety suggestions 8 years after fatal explosion A fleet of 21 new buses lined the lots as the 77-passenger vehicles, contracted with Kobussen Buses, run entirely on clean-operating propane autogas, which Kobussen said will benefit not only the riders and drivers, but the community as a whole. 'It's greener, it's quieter and it saves fuel,' Kobussen said. 'It's a better product all the way around.' Not only does it help the environment, but the buses, created by Blue Bird, also benefit the school district as a whole, cutting costs. 'Propane is less expensive than gasoline or diesel,' Alternative Fuels Manager Steve Whaley said. 'They can leak and contaminate soil and water. Propane can't, it immediately evaporates if it leaves the vessel.' The drivers and riders benefit greatly, especially in a Wisconsin winter, as bus driver Mike Cottrell said the mornings will quickly warm up. 'The propane heats up a little quicker, so you're not as cold seven to eight miles down the road,'Cottrell said. Kobussen said he hopes it's just the beginning of propane buses and wants to implement it at school districts statewide. Heavy rain raises concerns over potential dam failure in Wisconsin 'We are pushing towards more propane; we feel it is a better product,' Kobussen said. 'It's better than diesel by far; we are going down this path as much as possible.' Click here to learn more. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Seymour Community School District Unveils First Propane School Buses

SEYMOUR, Wis.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Seymour Community School District students will board new buses this upcoming 2025/2026 school year. At a ribbon-cutting ceremony today, the district unveiled a fleet of 20 Blue Bird Vision Propane school buses, contracted through Kobussen Buses, that will run entirely on clean-operating propane autogas. 'We are thrilled to introduce these new propane-powered buses to our district for the first time,' said Kellie Bohn, district administrator of Seymour Community School District. 'This type of alternatively fueled bus reflects our commitment to providing safe, reliable and environmentally friendly transportation for our students while also being mindful of our community's future.' Each of the new 2025 Blue Bird Vision Propane 77-passenger school buses comes equipped with a 7.3L V8 Ford engine and ROUSH CleanTech propane fuel system. Ford's 335-horsepower 7.3L engine is compact, powerful and easy to maintain. This bus retains equivalent horsepower, torque, and warranty coverage as its gas and diesel counterparts. 'Blue Bird is proud to see Seymour Community School District, through its partnership with Kobussen Buses, transition to ultra-low emission propane buses,' said Steve Whaley, alternative fuels manager for Blue Bird Corporation. 'These vehicles deliver exceptional performance while significantly reducing emissions, creating a healthier environment for students and the community.' Purchased from Blue Bird's authorized dealer, Wisconsin Bus Sales, the buses will be fueled at a recently installed propane station located at Kobussen's Seymour facility. Country Visions Cooperative will serve as the fuel provider for the first five years. For the 2025-26 school year, Kobussen has a locked-in rate of $1.20 per gallon of propane. 'Today's event marked our commitment to Seymour Community School District as well as other Wisconsin school districts to provide reliable and safe school bus transportation that also reduces harmful emissions from our air,' said Dan Kobussen, owner of Kobussen Bus. Near-zero emission propane vehicles reduce smog-producing emissions, eliminate particulate matter and lower nitrogen oxides by 95% compared with diesel. 'Propane autogas is a proven solution for school districts looking to lower their carbon footprint without compromising on performance or reliability,' said Todd Mouw, executive vice president of ROUSH CleanTech. 'We're excited to see Seymour Community School District, spearheaded by Kobussen Bus, lead the way in adopting this cleaner, cost-effective technology in Wisconsin.' Bus driver saves choking student in Adams-Friendship School District

A quick-thinking bus driver saved the life of a student in central Wisconsin earlier this month. According to a Facebook post from the Adams-Friendship Area School District, bus driver Jamie Smoczyk performed the Heimlich maneuver on a female student on the bus who began choking on an object lodged in her throat on a Jan. 10 afternoon bus route. The girl's brother alerted Smoczyk, who safely pulled the bus to the side of the road and asked the student if she was choking. "I quickly grabbed her out of the seat, threw her over my knee and pounded on the back of her," Smoczyk told WSAW-TV. "And then, she still wasn't responding to that. So, then I Heimliched her. "I was more concerned that I hurt her in that process, but she was chewing on a bracelet, and the beads and the little S-clip that goes to it got lodged in her throat." After ensuring the student was breathing again, the school district said Smoczyk comforted the student by sitting the child on her lap and reassuring her while the student's brother stroked his sister's hair to help calm her. Once the situation was under control, Smoczyk notified the Kobussen Buses dispatcher and spoke with the child's mother at her bus stop. The Kobussen dispatcher also contacted the child's father. "Jamie's quick thinking, training, and care, combined with the support of her young passengers, embody the spirit of the Adams-Friendship community," the school district said. "We take pride in wrapping services and support around our students, from drivers to teachers to assistants. Each plays an essential role in creating a safe and nurturing environment."
