Chorney-Booth: Kondattam is a pan-Indian dream come true
Article content While many Asian restaurants in Calgary are opting to go more regional these days, Thangavel and Senniappan decided to make Kondattam a pan-Indian affair or, as Sennaippan likes to say, 'from Kashmir to Kanyakumari' or 'K to K,' referencing a popular north-to-south Indian road trip route. The menu is quite large — though, Sennaippan notes, significantly more curated than a typical curry house menu — with selections representing the best of Indian cuisine. You've got snacks like pani puri ($10) balls stuffed with potatoes and green peas; a fried squid appetizer with house masala ($18); ultra-crisp dosas ($10) with plenty of filling options; and five flavours of naan ($3 to $7). Article content Everything on the menu is prepared with great skill and care, but there are some must-try standouts. While Senniappan did put the obligatory butter chicken on the menu, he's pleased that the most popular curry has been the fragrant Kondattam signature curry, made with a blend of 16 spices from the Karaikudi region of Tamil Nadu. The tandoor section of the menu also has some interesting choices, including fresh Atlantic salmon cooked in the charcoal tandoor ($24) and an Alberta sirloin steak ($26) prepared in the tandoor and served in a tomato butter curry. Article content Article content Thangavel and Senniappan aimed high, bringing their dream and spices from halfway around the world. Already almost constantly full of customers, it's turning out to be a dream come true for Calgarians, too. Article content Kondattam is located at 1006 1st St. S.E. in the Upten Apartments building. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner and can be reached at 403-453-0078 or through Article content In other food news, knowing where our food comes from is important, which is why agri-tourism is so popular. ‘Thudarum' box office collections day 11: Mohanlal's film mints Rs 160 crores worldwide
(Picture Courtesy: Faceboo Mohanlal's gripping survival drama 'Thudarum', directed by Tharun Moorthy, has stormed the global box office , raking in over Rs 160 crore worldwide within just 11 days of its theatrical release. Mohanlal regains his throne The film marks the first collaboration between the Malayalam superstar and the 'Operation Java' director, and its massive commercial success has reaffirmed Mohanlal's box office supremacy. Thudarum | Song - Kondattam According to the Sacnilk website, 'Thudarum' has collected Rs 74.9 crore in India net collections and Rs 82 crore gross domestically. Overseas, the film has contributed an impressive Rs 78 crore, highlighting its strong reception among the Malayali diaspora. Maintaining collections over week The Malayalam version alone has contributed Rs 73.49 crore to the domestic net, with consistent earnings across weekdays and weekends. On Day 11, the film collected Rs 4.4 crore (early estimates), following a strong Day 10 tally of Rs 7.35 crore. The movie had a magnificent start, opening with Rs 8.45 crore on Day 1 and peaking on Day 2 with Rs 10.2 crore. Although the Telugu version's contribution remains modest at Rs 1.41 crore over 10 days, it still represents a notable reach for a Malayalam film in a non-native market. ETimes review for the film 'Thudarum' has been widely praised for its intense storytelling, emotional depth, and Mohanlal's powerhouse performance. The film's realistic tone, coupled with Tharun Moorthy's meticulous direction, has connected well with critics and viewers alike. Our official ETimes review reads, 'Jakes Bejoy's music elevates the scenes, making a real impact in the storytelling. Shaji Kumar's cinematography is excellent and it is perfectly coordinated with the edits by Shafeeque VB and Nishadh Yusuf. Their collective work lay the ground for the mood of the film. Tharun, whose last film Saudi Vellakka won a National Awards, could have done better to have created a more subtle story; this very much has an '80s-'90s feel. For Mohanlal fans, his raw magnetism might be exciting, but with its loud and overwritten scenes, the acting lacks nuance all around.'
