(Photo by Konosuke Urata) RIHO NAGAO TOKYO -- Japanese government efforts to promote nuclear energy are expected to continue even after the ruling coalition's loss of its majority in the upper house election Sunday, with a number of opposition parties expressing support for restarting reactors or building new ones. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's Liberal Democratic Party and coalition partner Komeito favor restarting nuclear power plants whose safety has been confirmed. The LDP has also promoted the replacement of existing plants with safer next-generation plants.

(Photo by Konosuke Urata) SHINNOSUKE NAGATOMI TOKYO -- Japan's Air Self-Defense Force is participating in a major training exercise conducted by the U.S. Air Force around Japan, in what observers say is a show of unity intended to boost deterrence against China. Resolute Force Pacific (REFORPAC), running until Aug. 4, will take place in multiple locations in the Pacific including Hawaii, Guam, Japan and international airspace, according to U.S. Pacific Air Forces.

(Photo by Konosuke Urata) RIKA KIMURA and SHINNOSUKE NAGATOMI TOKYO -- Chronic equipment problems and a parts shortage prevent a fleet of Japanese patrol aircraft from operating at optimum capacity, a report released Friday by an independent national agency shows. The P-1 produced by Kawasaki Heavy Industries entered service in 2013, and 35 units were stationed across three bases as of September 2024. The aircraft can operate for long hours to monitor foreign warships and submarines in Japan's surrounding waters.
