Japanese Farm Minister Visits Rice Field in South Korea

PAJU, South Korea (Jiji Press) — Japanese agriculture minister Shinjiro Koizumi visited a rice field in a suburb of Seoul on Sunday to inspect the local rice farming situation. During the inspection in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, Koizumi received explanations from a rice farmer on market price trends and measures to combat high temperatures and pests. Speaking to reporters, Koizumi said that the doubling of rice prices in Japan in a year, coupled with the rapid increase in rice imports from overseas, including from South Korea, 'has led to anxiety among Japanese farmers.' The minister emphasized that he would work to stabilize the Japanese rice market through the release of government-stockpiled rice and the policy shift toward increasing rice production in Japan. Exports of South Korean rice to Japan have increased sharply, reaching a record 416 tons in January-June this year, which is 26 times the highest full-year total logged in 2012, according to Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corp. This is because South Korean rice, even with tariffs, can now be sold at around the same prices as Japanese rice. Koizumi is on a three-day visit to South Korea through Monday to attend a food security ministerial meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Incheon, near Seoul. On the sidelines of the APEC meeting, Koizumi held talks with senior U.S. government officials, in which the two sides agreed to proceed with preparations for U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins' visit to Japan and Koizumi's visit to the United States.

S. Korea's exports of dried seaweed hit record high in Q1

South Korea's exports of dried seaweed products, known as "gim" in Korean, reached an all-time high in the first quarter, driven by growing global demand for the food, data showed Monday. Outbound shipments of gim reached $281 million in the first three months of the year, up 21.1 percent from a year earlier, according to the data compiled by the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corp. The figure is the highest for any first quarter. The volume of gim exports increased 7.5 percent on-year to 10,161 tons in the January-March period. "We expect to export more than $1 billion worth of gim products this year as the volume and value of outbound shipments are both on the rise," an official from the oceans ministry said. The government earlier sought to reach the $1 billion mark by 2027. South Korea exported $997 million of gim products last year. The oceans ministry attributed the strong exports to the popularity of Korean gim products in the United States and China, the world's two largest markets. Gim exports to the US rose 21.6 percent on-year to $57.9 million in the first quarter on robust demand for seasoned gim products. Shipments to China spiked 86.5 percent to $51.1 million over the same period as gimbap, a Korean dish made from cooked rice and various fillings rolled in dried seaweed, gained popularity in the country. Exports to Thailand and Japan also gained 15.9 percent and 7.2 percent to $34.2 million and $34.4 million, respectively. (Yonhap)
