Footfall swells at Naimisharanya as devpt boosts religious tourism

Lucknow: The number of devotees visiting Naimisharanya has increased significantly due to improved infrastructure and better facilities, according to official data released by the state govt on Friday. "Attendance in the 84 Kosi Parikrama increased from 1.5 lakh to nearly 5 lakh. The number of devotees bathing at Chakra Tirtha on Amavasya grew from 50,000 to 1-2 lakh. Similarly, footfall on Mauni Amavasya jumped from 1.5 lakh to 3-4 lakh while Guru Purnima now draws 2-3 lakh visitors compared to 1 lakh earlier. The annual count of pilgrims rose from 1 crore in 2017 to over 2 crore now," said a govt officer. DM Abhishek Anand said the development in the holy town is in line with CM Yogi Adityanath's vision. "UP holds immense significance in religious tourism , and Naimisharanya is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites. Earlier govts neglected this shrine, but this administration has brought real change." A hotelier, Prashant Thakur, said: "Renovations, Chakra Tirtha beautification and the upcoming heliport have made a visible impact. Better connectivity has not only helped hotels but also hawkers, travel agents and flower vendors." A govt spokesperson said to accommodate this surge, the govt has launched projects worth around Rs 150 crore. Notable developments include a grand Chakra Tirtha entrance gate by the UP State Construction and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited and corridor-style entryways worth Rs 9.72 crore. Dormitories for pilgrims are being built by the UP Tourism Development Corporation at Rs 7.93 crore. The list includes a heliport and access roads. The Dhruv Kund is being beautified with Rs 3.81 crore while Rs 9.68 crore is being invested in tourism development at Janglinath Temple in Bartal, Misrikh. An additional Rs 22.77 crore has been sanctioned for construction of Chakra Tirtha Kund Complex and Rs 9.06 crore for entrance plaza. Also, a Rs 47.63 crore project has been approved for parking and tourism infrastructure on Sitapur Link Road by Naimisharanya Vikas Parishad. Promotional efforts on social media and the construction of South Indian-style temples have helped attract more devotees from southern states. Combined with simultaneous development at Ayodhya, Kashi and Mathura, Naimisharanya has become a sought-after destination. Naimisharanya is believed to be the land where Lord Vishnu's chakra created Chakra Tirtha and where 88,000 sages performed penance.
