Five arrested in Kelantan for illegal moneylending, including red paint attacks on borrowers' homes

KOTA BHARU, July 28 — Police have arrested five suspects believed to be involved in illegal moneylending activities, including threats and acts of mischief, such as splashing red paint on borrowers' homes. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the suspects, aged between 25 and 39, were detained under Op Vulture in separate raids. The first suspect was apprehended on July 23 in Pasir Tumboh, Kubang Kerian, while the other four were arrested on July 25 following a red paint incident in Pasir Hor. Police also seized 34 items believed to have been used in these activities, including red paint, threatening notes, clothing, face masks, mobile phones, and motorcycles. 'Preliminary investigations revealed that all five suspects are believed to be linked to at least nine cases of property damage in Kota Bharu, Tumpat, and Tanah Merah. 'Their actions included breaking window panes with stones, pasting threatening notes, and padlocking borrowers' gates as a form of intimidation,' he said in a statement tonight. Mohd Yusoff said the case is being investigated under Section 5(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951 and Sections 427/506 of the Penal Code. The suspects have been remanded for further investigations. — Bernama

Coconut milk trader, 64, charged with raping 18-year-old sister-in-law in Bachok

KOTA BHARU, July 27 — A 64-year-old man, who has two wives, was charged in the Sessions Court here today with raping his 18-year-old sister-in-law in January. According to the New Sunday Times (NST), the accused, whose name was not revealed, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read out before Judge Zulkifli Abdullah. The charge stated that the man was accused of raping his sister-in-law in a room at a residence in Kubang Golok, Bachok, at around 3pm on January 18. He faced charges under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to 30 years in prison and whipping upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Hajar Mazlan appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyer Ahmad Nurie Ab Rahman. NST reported that Siti Hajar opposed bail, citing the close family ties between the victim and the accused, as both families live together. However, Ahmad Nurie requested bail on the grounds that his client, a coconut milk trader, is the sole breadwinner and has two wives to support. The court eventually granted bail of RM12,000 with one surety, and set August 25 as the next hearing date.

Kemumin raid based on credible intelligence, police say

Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat advised the public not to spread unverified information and to continue cooperating with the authorities to preserve harmony in the state. (Bernama pic) KOTA BHARU : Police say the recent raid on a private gathering at a homestay in Kemumin was based on valid intelligence and evidence, with no intent of discrimination. Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat said the operation was carried out to maintain public order and safeguard moral values. He said intelligence revealed that invitations to the event, 'Majlis Malam Mesra Komuniti & Santai-Santai', were shared via WhatsApp within a select group, with no involvement by any official body such as an NGO or the health ministry. 'On the day of the event, the Kelantan police task force began surveillance at 5pm and observed around 100 individuals gathering to eat and socialise. The raid was carried out at about 1am to ensure public safety,' he said in a statement. He added that 20 individuals at the premises admitted to being part of the gay community, including a man from Perak and a student from a higher education institution in Besut, Terengganu. The rest were locals from Kelantan. Yusoff said checks of the participants' mobile phones found three individuals in possession of pornographic videos involving same-sex acts. 'All three were charged under Section 292 of the Penal Code and pleaded guilty in the Kota Bharu magistrates' court on July 20. They were fined between RM3,000 and RM4,000,' he said. The raid also uncovered hundreds of condoms and several boxes of HIV medication. Yusoff advised the public not to spread unverified information and to continue cooperating with the authorities to preserve harmony in the state. On Monday, the Kelantan government reminded all parties to inform local authorities and the relevant agencies before organising any events, to avoid confusion, misunderstanding, and negative public perceptions. Deputy menteri besar Mohamed Fadzli Hassan said that events, including health-related programmes, should be conducted properly and in accordance with procedures and regulations.

Inform before holding your events, Kelantan tells organisers

Deputy menteri besar Fadzli Hassan said all events, including health-related programmes, must be held in an orderly manner and in accordance with existing procedures and regulations. KOTA BHARU : The Kelantan government has reminded all parties to inform the local authorities and relevant agencies before organising their programmes to avoid confusion, misunderstandings and negative perceptions among the public. Deputy menteri besar Fadzli Hassan said all events, including health-related programmes, must be held in an orderly manner and in accordance with existing procedures and regulations. He was referring to the organisation of a health programme in Kemumin, Pengkalan Chepa, here, which was reportedly not officially communicated to the state authorities or enforcement agencies. 'The choice of venue and timing must also be considered wisely. Organising a programme until 2am in a village area such as Kemumin could cause concern among local residents. 'Such actions may be deemed insensitive to societal norms and local surroundings, and it would not be surprising if complaints were lodged with the police,' he said in a statement today.
