Journalist Kommineni sent to 14-day remand

Srinivasarao was arrested by Tulluru police in Hyderabad on Monday and brought to Nallapadu police station in Guntur via Vijayawada. Before being produced in court, he underwent a medical check-up at Guntur Government General Hospital (GGH), where doctors diagnosed a urinary tract infection. Other health parameters, including heart and sugar levels, were found to be normal. The case stems from a controversial television debate where journalist Krishnam Raju described Amaravati as 'a capital of prostitutes' instead of 'a capital of goddesses.' Srinivasarao, rather than denouncing the remarks, reportedly endorsed them by citing similar views and suggesting that such statements attract online abuse, according to the complaint. The remarks provoked widespread outrage from women's groups, civil society members, and Dalit organisations across Andhra Pradesh, leading to multiple complaints at police stations. While Srinivasarao was promptly arrested, Krishnam Raju is reportedly absconding, and efforts are underway to trace him. Given the heightened public emotions, particularly among women and Dalit communities in Amaravati, police arranged tight security during Srinivasarao's court appearance. Escort vehicles were flanked by additional convoy vehicles as a precautionary measure.

Senior journalist arrested over controversial debate

The Andhra Pradesh police on Monday (June 9, 2025) arrested Kommineni Srinivasa Rao, a senior journalist working with Sakshi TV, at his residence in Hyderabad and brought him to Guntur. The arrest was made based on a police complaint lodged by Kambampati Sireesha, a leader of Amaravati Capital Farmers' Dalit JAC and a resident of Rayapudi in Thullur mandal. 'During a live talk show with KSR programme in Sakshi TV, journalist V.V.R. Krishnam Raju and Kommineni Srinivasa Rao made obscene and malicious comments that Amaravati is not the capital of gods but of prostitutes and that only AIDS patients live there. These remarks, apparently made with the encouragement of the Sakshi management, have deeply hurt the self-respect of the women of Amaravati, particularly Dalit women,' Ms. Sireesha alleged in her complaint. The police mentioned in the FIR that, 'This is a case of insulting the modesty of women, promoting and creating enmity between different groups, with deliberate and malicious intention of outraging the religious feelings of citizens of India and defaming the women with criminal conspiracy. It promotes the feelings of enmity against members of the SCs or STs by transmitting through Sakshi TV channel that occurred on June 6, 2025.' Cases have been registered against the accused including Mr. Krishnam Raju, Mr. Srinivasa Rao and Sakshi TV management under Section 3(1)(u) of SC and ST Prevention of Atrocities Act (POA) Act, 1989, Section 67 of IT Act-2000-2008, Section 79 (Word, gesture or an act intended to outrage the modesty of women), Section 196 (Promoting enmity between different groups) and other charges including 353(2), 299, 356(2), 61(1) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). While Mr. Srinivasa Rao was arrested, the police are still on the hunt for Mr. Krishnam Raju, who is absconding. The police refused to divulge more details in view of security reasons.

Police complaints lodged against journalist for ‘offensive remarks' against Amaravati women

Women farmers and representatives of various Amaravati Joint Action Committees (JACs) lodged a police complaint at Mangalagiri Rural police station on Saturday (June 7, 2025), demanding action against journalist and political analyst V.V.R. Krishnam Raju for his alleged derogatory remarks against women from the capital region during a debate show aired on Sakshi TV. They condemned the statement describing Amaravati as a 'capital of prostitutes' and termed it an 'outrageous insult' to the women who had parted with their land and participated in the historic capital movement. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Assembly Deputy Speaker K. Raghu Rama Krishna Raju also lodged a complaint with the Director General of Police (DGP) on Saturday (June 7, 2025), seeking action against Mr. Krishnam Raju for making derogatory remarks about Amaravati and the women of Andhra Pradesh. Mr. Raghu Rama Krishna Raju condemned the reference to Amaravati as a 'capital of prostitutes,' calling it a 'disgraceful insult to the dignity of women'. He said such remarks reflect not only a biased narrative but also a severe breach of journalistic ethics and humanitarian values. The Deputy Speaker demanded that cases be registered against Mr. Krishnam Raju and senior journalist Kommineni Srinivasa Rao under IPC Sections 294, 354A, 500, 504, 505(2), and 509. He urged action against the television channel and the anchor involved, based on the telecast footage. The complainants, including leaders from the Amaravati Mahila JAC, Dalit JAC, and Rythu JAC, demanding a public apology from Sakshi TV and strict legal action. They alleged a targeted campaign by the YSRCP-supported media to defame Amaravati and disrupt its development. They accused former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP and his supporting media of demeaning women and stoking social tensions. Akula Jaya Satya (Women JAC), Vemuri Babu (Dalit JAC), T. Sambasiva, A. Ravi Kiran and others (Farmer JAC) and other leaders lodged the complaint. Lokesh condemns statements Meanwhile, IT and HRD Minister Nara Lokesh said that such disgraceful comments reflect the YSRCP's moral bankruptcy. 'Amaravati is the capital built on the sacrifices of mothers. Anyone who insults them has no place in our society,' he said. Mr. Lokesh reaffirmed his commitment to women's welfare and economic empowerment.
