Village Outreach Campaign begins in 12 blocks in Coimbatore district, 13 in Tiruppur district
The Village Outreach Campaign (Uzhavarai Thedi Velanmai), organised by the Agriculture and allied departments, which was inaugurated statewide by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin through video-conferencing from the Secretariat on Thursday, commenced in 12 blocks in Coimbatore district and 13 blocks in Tiruppur district. The significance of the scheme will be made known to the target beneficiaries through pamphlets, radio, newspapers, social media, visual media, officials said. Prior to conduct of the special camps, farmers will be asked to submit their grievances. The farmers will be facilitated to avail themselves of the utility of the various schemes. The camps will also feature stalls exhibiting inputs and agricultural equipment, and testing of soil, water and seeds will also be undertaken. Farmers will be sensitised to best practices in agriculture, water management techniques, value additions and marketing of produce, besides nature farming. Field inspections will be undertaken and there will also be agricultural productivity competition, according to officials. The farmers will be able to secure certifications pertaining to Agriculture and allied departments at the camps, Krishnaveni, Joint Director of Agriculture, Coimbatore district, who took part in the camp at Anamalai village in Anamalai Block said. Officials of all departments under Agriculture – Farmers Welfare Department and allied departments like Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Cooperation, along with scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendras reached out to the farmers to provide technical advisories and explain the schemes related to Agriculture and allied departments. The initiative aimed at taking farming to the next level will be conducted on the second and fourth Fridays of every month so that farmers in all villages will gain awareness on agricultural technologies and government schemes within a year, officials said. Services related to agriculture will be provided in the camps. Special problems arising in crop cultivation, animal husbandry and fish farming will be solved immediately by scientists of the Universities of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries. In Tiruppur, District Collector T. Krishnan took part in the outreach program at Keeranur village in Kangayam block. Joint Director of Agriculture Sundaravadivelu, and senior officials of Cooperatives, Horticulture and Animal Husbandry departments also took part. A total of 353 camps have been planned village-wise by the Agriculture and Horticulture departments across 12 panchayat unions.

Mines dept DD caught accepting bribe
Mangaluru: The Lokayukta police of Mangaluru allegedly caught deputy director of mines and geology department, Krishnaveni, taking a bribe of Rs 50,000 to give permission to extract laterite stones and level land in Ullal taluk. A statement from the Lokayukta police said that the complainant applied to the mines and geology department seeking permission to extract laterite stones and level land to construct a house in Ira village of Ullal taluk on Oct 28, 2024. Subsequently, the Ullal tahsildar gave a NoC for the same on March 21, 2025. However, the mines and geology department refused to give permission to the complainant. When he approached Krishnaveni in this regard, she called Pradeep, a staff member, and asked him to collect Rs 50,000 from the complainant to give the permission. The complainant later lodged a complaint against Krishnaveni and Pradeep with the Lokayukta police in Mangaluru. On Wednesday, the Lokayukta cops caught Krishnaveni's driver, Madhu, red-handed when receiving Rs 50,000 from the complainant on her behalf. Both of them were immediately taken into custody. A case was booked against Krishnaveni, staff member Pradeep, and driver Madhu. This operation was carried out under the direction of Kumarachandra, superintendent of police (in-charge), Karnataka Lokayukta, Mangaluru, along with deputy superintendent of police Gana P Kumar, Suresh Kumar P, inspectors Bharati G and Chandrashekhar KN, and Udupi Lokayukta police station's inspectors Manjunath and Rajendra Naik, along with other Lokayukta personnel from Mangaluru and Udupi.

Rain and thunderstorm take Chennai by surprise
After a hot, humid day, thunderstorms brought rain and joy to the city on Sunday afternoon. The summer showers accompanied by thunder and lightning in several parts of the city brought temperature down by a few notches. According to the data from the Regional Meteorological Office (RMC) here, rainfall recordings till 5.30 p.m. were: Nungambakkam observatory recorded 11 mm, Meenambakkam 8 mm, Jaya Engineering College 11.5 mm, Tiruttani 3.5 mm, Chembarambakkam 34.5 mm, Poonamallee 25 mm, Pallikaranai 12 mm and Puzhal 5.5. mm. Chennai Nungambakkam recorded a maximum of 38.8 degree Celsius and Meenambakkam 39.6 degree Celsius. Robert,a resident of Tiruvallur town, said that his coconut tree broke and fell due to the heavy winds. 'It was laden with tender coconut and the tree just split. Many branches in the mango tree too fell,' he said. Krishnaveni, a resident of Nehru Nagar in Thoraipakkam, said by 3.30 p.m. the sky suddenly turned very dark. 'It was almost like night,' she added. Reports also came in of hail stones falling along with the rain at Poonamallee. B. Amudha, Head (additional in-charge), RMC, said that Poonamallee recorded 25 mm of rain on Sunday. The radar showed red, which need not necessarily mean hail. When thunderstorms with gusty winds occur, the ice crystals in the upper portion of the cloud will be brought down due to intense drafts resulting in hail rain. It will be a very localised phenomenon, she explained. Flights diverted As rains lashed the city on Sunday evening, a few flights were diverted from Chennai airport to Tiruchi and Bengaluru airports. As the rains began, some of the flights which were scheduled for arrival at that time couldn't land at the city airport, sources said. Three flights from Madurai, Tiruchi and Singapore had to be diverted. The flight from Madurai departed around 2.30 p.m. and had to arrive in Chennai at 3.55 p.m. But it was diverted to Tiruchi. The flight from Tiruchi which left around 2.55 p.m. and had to land at 3.55 p.m. was diverted back to Tiruchi airport itself. The flight from Singapore which was to land at 3.55 p.m. was diverted to Bengaluru airport. No flights were cancelled due to rain, sources added.
