Village Outreach Campaign begins in 12 blocks in Coimbatore district, 13 in Tiruppur district

The Village Outreach Campaign (Uzhavarai Thedi Velanmai), organised by the Agriculture and allied departments, which was inaugurated statewide by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin through video-conferencing from the Secretariat on Thursday, commenced in 12 blocks in Coimbatore district and 13 blocks in Tiruppur district.
The significance of the scheme will be made known to the target beneficiaries through pamphlets, radio, newspapers, social media, visual media, officials said.
Prior to conduct of the special camps, farmers will be asked to submit their grievances. The farmers will be facilitated to avail themselves of the utility of the various schemes. The camps will also feature stalls exhibiting inputs and agricultural equipment, and testing of soil, water and seeds will also be undertaken. Farmers will be sensitised to best practices in agriculture, water management techniques, value additions and marketing of produce, besides nature farming. Field inspections will be undertaken and there will also be agricultural productivity competition, according to officials.
The farmers will be able to secure certifications pertaining to Agriculture and allied departments at the camps, Krishnaveni, Joint Director of Agriculture, Coimbatore district, who took part in the camp at Anamalai village in Anamalai Block said.
Officials of all departments under Agriculture – Farmers Welfare Department and allied departments like Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Cooperation, along with scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendras reached out to the farmers to provide technical advisories and explain the schemes related to Agriculture and allied departments.
The initiative aimed at taking farming to the next level will be conducted on the second and fourth Fridays of every month so that farmers in all villages will gain awareness on agricultural technologies and government schemes within a year, officials said.
Services related to agriculture will be provided in the camps. Special problems arising in crop cultivation, animal husbandry and fish farming will be solved immediately by scientists of the Universities of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries.
In Tiruppur, District Collector T. Krishnan took part in the outreach program at Keeranur village in Kangayam block. Joint Director of Agriculture Sundaravadivelu, and senior officials of Cooperatives, Horticulture and Animal Husbandry departments also took part. A total of 353 camps have been planned village-wise by the Agriculture and Horticulture departments across 12 panchayat unions.

Chennai, May 31 (UNI) The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is closely monitoring the situation arising out of oil spill and plastic pellets in the sea along Tamil Nadu coasts after a Liberian ship sank off Kochi coast. A defence release here on Saturday evening said the Liberian-flagged Container Ship MSC Elsa 3 had sank off Kochi which was carrying 640 containers and #POL. "ICG had coordinated #Rescue of entire crew but numerous containers, debris, and plastic pellets (nurdles) were spilled at sea", it said. "Team #ICG East have been keeping close watch on the situation and coordinating response to these nurdles/other debris that have washed ashore along Tamil Nadu coasts at Colachel & Kanyakumari. A 40Ft Container has also washed ashore at Kodimunai Beach", it said. The ICG team were deputed to these sites for assisting the District Administration Teams towards the ongoing cleanup operations at Colachel and Kanyakumari to protect the Marine Environment, it said. Following the sinking of the ship, a total of 22 coastal villages across the Killiyoor and Kalkulam taluks in Kanniyakumari district have been affected by the debris that washed ashore, including a container. The vessel was carrying 640 containers, including 13 with hazardous cargo and 12 with calcium carbide and also had 84.44 metric tonnes of diesel and 367.1 metric tonnes of furnace oil. While the initial impact of the incident was felt along the coast of Kerala, plastic pellets, wooden logs, and cashew nuts have begun washing ashore in the villages of Kanniyakumari over the past three days. The district administration has opened a 24x7 control room to enable the public to report if any debris were found along the coast. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin also held a review meeting at the State Secretariat to discuss the steps for the removal of the debris that were washed ashore. Officials of the Revenue, Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Fisheries Departments and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board took part in the meeting which discussed on the safe removal of plastic and other materials that have washed ashore and to prevent any harmful effect on the public and to assess the potential impact on marine organisms. Though no hazardous materials have washed ashore on the Tamil Nadu coast till date, the Chief Minister directed the authorities to coordinate with various departments and volunteers for the safe removal of the debris, besides conducting studies on both the short term and long term environmental impact on marine life. Stage and pandal arrangements for the State-level school Pravesanotsavam (school opening day fete) at Government Higher Secondary School, Kalavoor, Alappuzha, are expected to be completed by Friday, Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty has said. Minister for Culture Saji Cherian will flag off a proclamation rally in Alappuzha town on Saturday in connection with the Pravesanotsavam. Nearly 5,000 people will take part in the rally, he said. Addressing a press meet here on Thursday on the Pravesanotsavam arrangements, the General Education Minister said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan would inaugurate the Pravesanotsavam at 9.30 a.m. on Monday. Mr. Sivankutty would preside over the event, in which students would present cultural programmes from 8.30 a.m. Committee formed Elaborating on the arrangements, Mr. Sivankutty said an organising committee with Alappuzha MLA P.P. Chitharanjan as chairperson and Mr. Cherian and Minister for Agriculture P. Prasad as patrons had been formed. The Minister said the Kalavoor school's teachers, parent-teacher association, school management committee, and the people's representatives were visiting houses of all students to invite them and their parents to the event. Street art The school compound wall and premises had been beautified through street art under the leadership of the organising committee and the district panchayat art academy. Provisions were being collected from the people and shopkeepers of Kalavoor for a sadya intended for 3,000 people. Posters and reels related to the Pravesanotsavam had been provided to schools. Arrangements were being made to telecast the function in all schools, Mr. Sivankutty said.
