
Arrangements in full swing for Pravesanotsavam: Minister
Addressing a press meet here on Thursday on the Pravesanotsavam arrangements, the General Education Minister said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan would inaugurate the Pravesanotsavam at 9.30 a.m. on Monday.
Mr. Sivankutty would preside over the event, in which students would present cultural programmes from 8.30 a.m.
Committee formed
Elaborating on the arrangements, Mr. Sivankutty said an organising committee with Alappuzha MLA P.P. Chitharanjan as chairperson and Mr. Cherian and Minister for Agriculture P. Prasad as patrons had been formed.
The Minister said the Kalavoor school's teachers, parent-teacher association, school management committee, and the people's representatives were visiting houses of all students to invite them and their parents to the event.
Street art
The school compound wall and premises had been beautified through street art under the leadership of the organising committee and the district panchayat art academy.
Provisions were being collected from the people and shopkeepers of Kalavoor for a sadya intended for 3,000 people.
Posters and reels related to the Pravesanotsavam had been provided to schools. Arrangements were being made to telecast the function in all schools, Mr. Sivankutty said.

Midday meal beneficiary students to get 4 kg of rice for Onam
Students who are beneficiaries of the midday meal scheme will be given 4 kg of rice each for Onam, Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty has said. Nearly 24.8 lakh students from pre-primary to Class VIII will benefit. The government has given permission for the rice to be distributed from the stocks of the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco). Supplyco will also transport the rice to schools. Besides the current transportation charges, an additional 50 paise a kg will be given. Directions have been given to Supplyco to lift stocks from neighbouring districts in case of shortage in a particular district.

Crop survey, birth and death registration must be carried out in time, Ballari officials told
Deputy Commissioner Prashanth Kumar Mishra has directed officials to ensure that the ongoing crop survey in the district must be conducted in a systematic and error-free manner, while delays in the registration of births and deaths will not be tolerated. Chairing a District-level Coordination Committee meeting at his office in Ballari on Tuesday, Mr. Mishra reviewed the progress of crop-cutting experiments, civil registration of births and deaths, crop area reconciliation and other related matters. Noting that 84% of sowing has been completed in the district for the current agricultural season, Mr. Mishra said that 1,760 field-level workers from the Agriculture, Horticulture, Revenue and Rural Development and Panchayat Raj departments have been deployed across five taluks to conduct the monsoon crop survey. 'So far, 1,704 crop-cutting experiments have been carried out. Form 1 must be mandatorily filled during the crop survey,' he said and directed departmental heads to ensure the completion of the exercise in time. On the issue of birth and death registrations, Mr. Mishra underlined that all registrations in both rural and urban areas must be completed within the stipulated 21 days as mandated under the Births and Deaths Registration Act. 'There should be no delay in issuing certificates. There should be no scope for middlemen. Citizens must be provided certificates promptly,' he said. District Statistical Officer N.K. Patribasappa told the meeting that between January and July 2025, 17,098 births were registered in the district, comprising 8,817 boys and 8,281 girls. During the period, 7,883 deaths were registered, including 4,667 male, 3,213 female and three persons belonging to minority gender groups. Responding to this, the Deputy Commissioner said that government and private health institutions across the district must mandatorily record all births and deaths occurring on their premises within the prescribed time. He noted that 3,388 cases of birth and death registrations remain pending in urban local bodies, including the Ballari City Corporation, and directed the District Health and Family Welfare Officer to issue notices to private health facilities responsible for delays. Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Zubair, District Surgeon N. Basareddy, Joint Director of Agriculture Somasundar, officers of the Horticulture and Municipal Administration departments, Land Records and Survey Settlement officials, all tahsildars and other district-level officers were present.

216 SC/ST girl students get scholarship
Madurai: Scholarship assistance was given to 216 SC/ST meritorious girl students from 54 govt and aided schools in the district on Thursday as part of 'Canara Bank Dr Ambedkar Vidya Jyothi. ' Under the CSR programme, students of classes V to X were provided a total contribution of Rs8.64 lakh. Each student of classes V to VII received Rs3,000, while those of classes VIII to X received Rs5,000. A Lakshmi, a teacher from Government Higher Secondary School, T Kunnathur, said five of their students received the grant. "These students are from a rural area and they all excel in academics. Their parents are all daily wage earners," she said. One of the students, Kala Devi of class X, said she would use the sum to purchase books and meet study-related expenses. A total of Rs18 crore was distributed in the state to 46,000 students this year. S Raja, fondly known as Pattimandram Raja, was chief guest at the event.
