Hopewell: Fire causes extensive damage to St. James Catholic Church, under investigation
Authorities in Hopewell are investigating what caused a fire on May 14 at St. James Catholic Church that broke out around 9:41 p.m. Hopewell Fire & EMS responded to it swiftly. The blaze was contained to the building, preventing it from spreading to nearby properties. The church suffered extensive damage. Heavy smoke and flames were visible when firefighters arrived on the scene within four minutes of being dispatched. Crews immediately initiated fire suppression tactics, working efficiently to bring the fire under control. First responders conducted a thorough search of the premises and did not discover any occupants inside. No civilian injuries were reported. Mutual Aid assistance was requested and Chesterfield County Fire & EMS and Colonial Heights Fire & EMS responded to the scene to assist in firefighting efforts as well as fire investigations. NWS Virginia forecast: Possible thunderstorm, tornado, flash flooding on Sunday
The National Weather Service [NWS] issued a hazardous weather outlook on March 13 at 4:27 a.m. for eastern Virginia, central Virginia, east central Virginia, north central Virginia, south central Virginia and southeast Virginia, southeast Maryland and northeast North Carolina. The NWS announcement was made during Severe Weather Awareness Week, March 10 -14. Mentioned on NWS's website, the following localities in or around The Progress-Index readership area that may be impacted include Amelia, Powhatan, Richmond, Dinwiddie, Prince George, Charles City, Western and Eastern Chesterfield, including Colonial Heights, and Eastern and Western Henrico. Hopewell: VFW Post 637 hosts multiple events to honor Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans Saturday, March 14 - Sunday, March 15: Winds increase Saturday night through Sunday, with occasional gusts of 30 to 40 mph possible inland and 35 to 45 mph along the coast. Thunderstorms with strong to locally damaging wind gusts and the potential for a brief tornado are possible Sunday. Heavy rainfall may also lead to localized instances of flash flooding, especially in urban or poor drainage areas.
