Artistic swimming success sees young club dive into spotlight
Since its launch in 2022, athletes from Selwyn Artistic Swimming have impressed as the club continues to grow. Head coach Chantelle Murray is expecting bigger and better things from her young team. Sam Coughlan reports New Zealand's youngest artistic swimming club, Selwyn, was founded just three years ago. It began with just five athletes who followed coach Chantelle Murray from her former club Canterbury. Today, the club boasts more than 40 swimmers and recently claimed five gold medals at the South Island Championships, held at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre. Murray said it took a lot of hard work to get to this point. 'In the first year, I think I grew about five (members) and then lost a few. Then it wasn't until the second year, 2023, we grew to about 30, which was like 'wow, this is really big'.' Keen to start her own club in 2022 after moving to Rolleston the year before, Murray said it was a natural fit to be based in the region. 'I thought, 'I want to have it just at one pool, I want to build the relationship with the aquatic centre and the community out here and be able to offer things just to Selwyn.' 'So when I moved out here, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to start.' With a strong artistic swimming background and more than a decade of coaching – including 11 years at Canterbury and six with national development squads – Murray brought plenty of experience to the venture. The jewel in Murray's crown at Selwyn is Kristina Stepchenko, 15, who joined in July last year after moving from Russia with her family. A competitive swimmer since the age of six, Kristina has quickly risen to become the club's top performer. She earned three gold medals at the South Islands and another at last year's national championships in Hamilton. 'We work together really well,' Kristina said of her teammates . 'I feel like I've known them for my whole life, even though it's almost a year.' She normally trains 18 hours a week, a combination of working on her routines, regular swim training, and on-land stretching and going through the movements of her routines. But even for such a dedicated athlete, balancing school and training isn't always easy. 'I need to focus on my time management,' the Rolleston College student said. 'The temptation is sometimes just to stay on my phone, but I think it (swimming) lets me grow as a person, so I'm really glad I have that.' Murray praised Kristina's ability and drive to improve herself. While focusing on the highest-performing athletes is important, Murray is passionate about growing Selwyn Artistic Swimming and attracting new members. She offers sessions for local schools where kids get the opportunity to give the sport a go and see if it sparks their interest. One such recruit is 12-year-old Matthew Hamilton-Cross, who visited the club late last year with his classmates at West Rolleston Primary School and stuck with the sport. His decision has already paid off – Matthew won gold in the mixed aquarina duet alongside partner Kelicia Purcell at the South Island Championships. ' I'm getting way better than I was when I started,' he said. Like Kristina, he has a busy schedule, training Wednesday mornings and afternoons as well as Sundays – but he does not mind the workload. ' If I was able to, I would definitely train more,' he said. The club is now preparing for its next major challenge – the national championships in Wellington at the end of September. Seventeen Selwyn athletes will be competing in the event, including Kristina and Matthew. ' I'm just hoping to do my best and do the cleanest swim I can do,' Kristina said. Said Matthew: 'I definitely (want) to at least get a medal at nationals.' Murray is optimistic about her team's chances. ' I feel like this year I think we're going to make a pretty good mark on nationals,' she said. 'As well having Kristina and Scarlett (Hardy, Kristina's duet partner) to look up to, we've got a quite decent chunk of athletes. 'There's some duets I really think that could do well. I think most could make the podium.' A strong showing in Wellington would cement Selwyn's status as one of New Zealand's rising forces in the sport.

General Hospital Spoilers Preview May 21: Kristina Finally Learns the Truth
The next General Hospital spoilers video for Wednesday, May 21, 2025, shows Alexis telling Kristina about Ric and Ava's blackmail while Sonny informs ADA Turner that no one's getting rid of him, and Joss has some choice words for Willow. Hosting the Nurses' Ball, Lucy (Lynn Herring) tells the audience, 'This will be a night you will never forget.' The weekly teasers state that the Nurses' Ball performances begin, and so do the shenanigans. READ THIS: Here's everything we know about the 2025 Nurses' Ball. Curtis (Donnell Turner) tells Portia (Brook Kerr), 'This could destroy everything.' Hopefully, Curtis goes easy on her and is more angry that Drew (Cameron Mathison) was strong-arming his wife than at her. Josslyn (Eden McCoy) says to Willow (Katelyn MacMullen), 'You will never take Michael's children away from him.' The teasers also show that Josslyn has some choice words for Willow, so hopefully they're more scathing. Willow deserves a verbal thrashing, and Joss is the one to give it to her. READ THIS: The pros and cons of Curtis and Portia's relationship. Lulu (Alexa Havins) tells Cody (Josh Kelly), 'I'm right. I just need to confirm my suspicions.' Really? At the Nurses' Ball, Lulu? According to the teasers, Lulu watches Lois's every move. But how will that confirm that Gio (Giovanni Mazza) is Brook Lynn's (Amanda Setton) son? Elsewhere, Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) informs a shocked Kristina (Kate Mansi), 'They know what you did, and they can prove it.' Finally! She obviously explained that Ric (Rick Hearst) and Ava (Maura West) have proof Kristina cut his brakes and are blackmailing her. Maybe now Kristina will understand why her Mom almost had her committed. READ THIS: Can Cody stop Ric and Ava? And, in an almost whispery tone, Sonny (Maurice Benard) menacingly informs ADA Turner (Nazneen Contractor), 'Nobody's running me out of here.' She's looking to oust him, but we're not sure why. Perhaps she's FBI Agent Hannah Scott (Lisa Vultaggio) with plastic surgery, come back to get revenge on Sonny for some reason?

General Hospital spoilers: Sonny learns a bombshell that leaves him furious?
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The week of May 19 has already proven to be quite explosive on General Hospital, and the 2025 Nurses Ball just kicked off. Pre-ball, Carly (Laura Wright) and Nina (Cynthia Watros) literally had a knock-down fight in Carly's living room, which honestly was one of the best scenes for the soap in a while. Then, on May 20, as Port Charles residents took to the Nurses Ball, Tracy (Jane Elliot) was arrested for drugging Drew (Cameron Mathison). Although she told Mac (John J. York) at the police station that she was being framed, he told her there was ketamine found in her car. Drew is obviously setting Tracy up, but that's a story for another day. Also on May 20, Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) had it out with Kristina (Kate Mansi). After arriving at Alexis' home and seeing her mother be 'nice' to Ric (Rick Hearst), Kristina chastised the Davis matriarch for being cordial to the man working with Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) and Drew to take Michael's kids. Ric cautioned Kristina about being nicer to him moving forward, and after he left, Alexis more or less stressed the same. Kristina railed against her mother for her newfound peace with Ric and for Alexis previously trying to have Kristina committed. Having had enough of Kristina's unfair remarks, Alexis blurts out that she's been trying to help her daughter, as she knows Kristina tried to kill Ava (Maura West), but caused Ric's accident instead. Digging more into the mess created by Kristina, Sonny (Maurice Benard) has no idea that his daughter cut the brakes of his half-brother's car, which almost killed not only Ric, but Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) as well. Furthermore, the Dimpled Kingpin of Port Charles has no clue that Ric and Ava were blackmailing Alexis to keep this all a secret. When Sonny hears all the sordid details of this catastrophe, we imagine he's going to be furious. Sonny is not one who likes to be left out of the loop when it comes to his children, and something of this size deserves his attention. Kristina is now a bonafide attempted murderer, an official criminal. While he likely wouldn't care much if Ric were to disappear for good, he probably would care about what could have happened to Elizabeth. The head nurse is the mother of one of Jason's (Steve Burton) sons, and she is the girlfriend of Sonny's good friend, Lucky (Jonathan Jackson). Plus, Kristina's actions were a call she needed help, and Sonny may not be happy for missing the signs and not getting her the assistance she required. Additionally, Ava has been skating on thin ice with Sonny for years now, and if they didn't share a child, he may have dealt with her long ago. If he learns that Ava was using this whole ordeal as an opportunity to exploit his eldest daughter and her mother, he could revert to vintage Sonny and levy a threat against Ava that turns every hair on her head ghostly white. Heck, he could make a move to kill her (which is unlikely in our book). All in all, we just hope Sonny's heart can take the bombshell news and withstand his probable visceral reaction. By the way, we should also note the possibility that Kristina's secret isn't the thing to push him over the edge. We'd be remiss if we didn't bring up the chance that Sonny explodes when he finds out Sasha (Sofia Mattsson) is carrying Michael's child and Jason, his best friend, has been lying about it. But hey, it's the Nurses Ball, so anything can happen. New episodes of General Hospital air on weekdays on ABC. If you miss an episode, you can catch up on Hulu.
