Kroger is giving away free ice cream on Friday: How to get yours
To celebrate the first day of summer, Kroger is giving away more than 90,000 pints of free ice cream. On Friday, June 20, the first day of summer, the grocery store chain is giving away 92,000 pints of Kroger brand ice cream for free – 1,000 pints for each of the season's 92 days. The campaign is a part of a promotion for Kroger's Summer in a Pint collection of ice creams. The grocery store chain started its Summer in a Pint collection last year, offering 45,000 pints of free ice cream (50 pints per minute of summer's 900 minutes of sunlight). "Last year, we were blown away by customer excitement for our free pint offer and this summer we are making it even sweeter," Kroger Group Vice President of Center Store Merchandising Mike Murphy said in a news release. Kroger doubles up on ice cream giveaway offering 92,000 pints to celebrate summer
This Friday is the first day of summer and the longest day of the year. If you're looking for a way to kick off summer, how about some tasty and cool scoops of ice cream? And for free! It's time to scream, or rather download, for ice cream. Kroger is back with a freebie to start the summer season by dishing out coupons for tens of thousands of pints of ice cream to celebrate. This year, the nationwide grocer is doubling down on its offer, giving away more than double last year's 45,000 pints. On Friday, Kroger will make available a downloadable coupon giving away 92,000 pints of its Kroger brand ice cream or, according to a news release, 1,000 pints for each of summer's 92 days. While that sounds like a lot of ice cream, the giveaway is online and valid across the Kroger family of stores nationwide, including in Michigan. According to a Kroger news release, the offer isn't valid in California, Colorado, Louisiana, Tennessee and Nevada or at its Mariano's, Metro Market, Pick 'n Save and QFC stores. "Last year, we were blown away by customer excitement for our free pint offer and this summer we are making it even sweeter," said Mike Murphy, group vice president of center store merchandising at Kroger, in a news release. At noon Eastern time, Friday, June 20, customers can go to to download a digital coupon. Coupons are available only while supplies last, and each coupon is for a single use. The coupon is valid from Friday through the Fourth of July. When Kroger offered the free, downloadable coupon last year, coupon supplies were depleted shortly after the 8 a.m. release. And if you don't get a free coupon for Kroger Brand of ice cream, customers can get a digital coupon, which goes live also at noon on Friday, for $1 off two Kroger brand pints of ice cream. Here are the four new flavors available for a limited time: Italian Style Summer Fizz: A blood orange-flavored sherbet with popping candy clusters and a blood orange-flavored ribbon. Fireside Nights: A take on classic s'mores is this toasted marshmallow-flavored ice cream with s'mores pieces and "glittering swirl that radiates the orange hue of a campfire flame." Sandy Shores: Coconut-flavored ice cream "reminiscent of crystal-blue seas" with a sweet and salty pretzel crunch. Poolside Tan Lines: Swirls of vanilla bean, chocolate and coffee ice creams. Kroger is giving away 92,000 free pints of ice cream so more customers can celebrate the start of summer with a taste of our new flavors," said Mike Murphy, Group Vice President of Center Store Merchandising at Kroger. To say that running a large supermarket is quite a task would be an understatement. Imagine what it takes to organize everything in the store to run smoothly. There are as many prices and expiration dates to manage as there are grocery items. Then, there's customer service, making sure shelves are stocked, and so much more. Sometimes mistakes happen. In May, Kroger was accused of secretly charging higher prices to its customers, according to an investigation from Consumer Reports, The Guardian and the Food & Environment Reporting Network. Quickly after the investigation revealed results, several Kroger workers told Consumer Reports that managers were instructed to fix all price tag errors within "a matter of days." Furthermore, Kroger also announced it was hiring 15,000 new associates to "enhance the customer experience," in roles such as "cashiers, baggers, deli bakery clerks, pharmacy technicians, Kroger delivery drivers," according to a press release. Related: Target struggles to stop spiral amid customer backlash The retailers' online marketplace Kroger Ship, which offered products from other companies alongside grocery delivery, was shut down and removed from its website in March. So far, the company has not issued any official statement on the move. More recently, Kroger has been awarded the 2025 Gold Bell Seal for Workplace Mental Health, a workplace certification that recognizes employers who are aiming to establish mentally healthy workplaces for their associates.
