RM1mil relief for KLFA but no rash spending, says president

PETALING JAYA: For a team that have previously struggled with financial issues, receiving a windfall is certainly a welcome relief, especially with the new Super League season set to begin on Aug 8. The Kuala Lumpur Football Association (KLFA) were handed an unexpected boost when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an RM1mil allocation during their Golden Jubilee celebration on Saturday. However, KLFA president Syed Yazid Syed Omar is keeping his excitement in check, stressing that any decision on how the funds will be used must be carefully discussed with the association's executive committee, with the main priority being the development of Kuala Lumpur football. 'We never asked for it, but the Prime Minister made the announcement himself. I didn't expect it at all. It's a substantial amount, and we are very grateful,' said Yazid. 'KLFA need to discuss on how to use the money thoroughly. What matters most is ensuring that KLFA are well managed. As for KL City's long-standing salary arrears and debts, Yazid said most of the outstanding payments have been resolved, although he declined to reveal the exact amount still owed. This season, KL City have also made bold moves in the transfer market by signing several high-profile players, including Manuel Hidalgo, Syamer Kutty Abba and Safawi Rasid. Yazid expressed his gratitude that the club's finances are now in a more stable position, largely due to the support of patron Fahmi Fadzil. With a strengthened squad, he is aiming for a top-two finish in the Malaysian Super League and a spot in the AFC Champions League 2 (ACL2). 'For KL City, funding and sponsorship have been flowing in. I would like to thank our patron for being instrumental in helping us secure the necessary support. 'We are financially stable now. Salaries are up to date under the new management and everything is running smoothly. Last season, despite facing severe financial difficulties, KL City still managed to finish sixth in the Super League and reached the quarter-finals of the Malaysian Cup.

PM Anwar allocates RM1m to KLFA for football revival in Kuala Lumpur

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced an allocation of RM1 million to the Kuala Lumpur Football Association (KLFA) in support of efforts to revitalise football in the capital city. Anwar said the government consistently encouraged the development of football, which he described as a people's sport that was widely loved and participated in. However, he stressed that emphasis should be placed on infrastructure as a fundamental aspect in advancing the sport. 'This is an opportunity for us to elevate the status of national football, but it has to start from the basics. That is why what was raised just now about collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Higher Education, or other training institutes is important. 'It's not just about funding, but adequate infrastructure is crucial — proper fields, training facilities, training academies — to ensure our children are trained well and in comfort,' he said in his speech at the KLFA's 50th Golden Jubilee celebration here today. Also present were Communications Minister and KLFA patron Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and KLFA president Syed Yazid Syed Omar. Meanwhile, Anwar also urged that sportsmanship be preserved, including proper conduct among supporters, who at times behaved beyond acceptable limits and tarnished the spirit of unity. 'There are groups of supporters that can sometimes get out of control... Losing does not mean the team should be ridiculed,' he said. The Prime Minister also said he had instructed the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to monitor and control any incidents that could harm the image of national football, in line with the goal of sports as a medium of unity and healthy living. He said associations such as KLFA were also responsible for ensuring that sportsmanship and unity continued to be upheld among supporters and players. At the event, KLFA also announced several strategic collaborations, including with the Ministry of Education to strengthen football development at the school level and the Ministry of Youth and Sports in implementing coaching development programmes and initiatives involving youth. - Bernama

Fandi to add spice for KL next season?

PETALING JAYA: Will Singapore's Fandi Ahmad join Kuala Lumpur as the new football coach? It will all be known tomorrow when the club get to know their total budget to run the show in the new season. Kuala Lumpur Football Association (KLFA) president Syed Yazid Syed Omar has indicated that there will be new additions and they will also decide on who the new coach would be. It is learnt that the two coaching candidates linked to the club are Sulaiman Hussin and Fandi, who did a great job to take Pahang to the Malaysia Cup final recently. Kuala Lumpur, coached by Miroslav Kuljanac during the 2024-2025 campaign, finished sixth in the Super League with 31 points, a respectable finish but still short of the club's aspirations. As for players, it is learnt that centreback Irfan Zakaria could return to the club after leaving Kedah earlier this year. 'There may be changes. We may bring four or five national players to join the team,' said Yazid. 'We want to build a strong team who can compete in the league. We will know the details after our meeting on Wednesday (tomorrow).' The current players that the club are looking to retain are Australian centreback Giancarlo Gallifuoco, striker Paulo Josue, rightback Kamal Azizi Zabri, goalkeeper Hafizul Hakim and winger J. Partiban. As for foreigners, there could be changes with one of them being Timor Leste captain and winger Joao Pedro.
