Monthly Jalur Gemilang ceremony at Dataran Merdeka
KUALA LUMPUR: A monthly Jalur Gemilang flag-raising ceremony will take place at Dataran Merdeka on the first Wednesday of each month. Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif said the public is welcome to attend the event, held from 8.50am to 9am. She said the ceremony promotes reflection on Malaysia's independence and encourages national pride and patriotism. "This initiative is part of the Kuala Lumpur Heritage programme launched by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. "The ceremony will now be held on the first Wednesday of every month, with the Malaysian flag raised at Dataran Merdeka," she said after officiating the event. Maimunah said the initiative also aims to draw local and international tourists to experience the cultural and historical value of Dataran Merdeka. Schools and community groups will be invited to take part in the monthly ceremony, which started in November last year. The ceremony also aims to raise awareness about respect for the Jalur Gemilang and strengthen community ties with City Hall as part of broader urban development efforts.

PM: Warisan KL project to position capital as a creative and culturally rich city
KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Heritage (Warisan KL) project aims to position the capital as a creative and culturally rich city, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. His senior press secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, said the prime minister viewed the initiative as one that nurtured the spirit and identity of its people, beyond just constructing buildings. "The project serves as a catalyst for development rooted in heritage, creativity and community engagement. "The prime minister sees Warisan KL as a symbol of the city's soul being restored, in line with the aspirations of Malaysia Madani, which emphasises value-based and civilisational development. "Since the beginning of his administration, the prime minister has consistently stressed that development should not be measured solely by skyscrapers or mega projects, but by what touches the lives of the people and creates a vibrant, inclusive and meaningful city. "This project is a manifestation of that principle — to build the future without forsaking our roots and values," he said during the Prime Minister's Office daily briefing today. Anwar, who is scheduled to officiate at the Warisan KL project tomorrow, had said the initiative marked an important effort to revitalise the nation's capital, not just from a physical perspective, but also through cultural preservation, historical conservation and the strengthening of community values. He added that the Madani Government's efforts to conserve and preserve historical heritage sites were not only about safeguarding history, but also about instilling a sense of love and appreciation for the nation's legacy. "These efforts should be viewed as a government investment, one that establishes tourism landmarks capable of generating economic benefits for the people and the country. "The government will never allow, nor adopt, a complacent attitude towards historical landmarks that hold significant meaning for national development." Anwar had previously announced the RM1 billion project to preserve the capital's historic landmarks. Key sites under the initiative, including Dataran Merdeka, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, and Carcosa Seri Negara, will be officially recognised as part of Kuala Lumpur's heritage.
