Are students unaware or just coping well? MOHE says counselling numbers low as nationwide mental health study nears completion
KUALA NERUS, Aug 20 — The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) recorded a total of 402 public university students having been referred to counsellors at their respective institutions throughout last year. Prof Dr Zainal Amin Ayub, the Deputy Director General of Higher Education (Governance and Development), said the figure represented 0.067 per cent of the total number of public university students nationwide. 'Although the number is quite small, it can be seen from two different perspectives - either there is a lack of awareness among students regarding this service (counselling) or that the students' mental health is generally at a good level,' he told reporters after officiating the 3rd Malaysian Universities National Health Convention (MUNCH) 2025 here today. Zainal Amin also said that a comprehensive study relating to the mental health of public university students nationwide is being carried out by the ministry. He added that the nine-month study, conducted by researchers from various universities, including Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, is expected to be completed next month. He said the findings of the study will be presented to the ministry to identify the next steps to be taken. Meanwhile, Zainal Amin said the two-day MUNCH 2025, which began today, is attended by over 140 participants comprising staff from public university health centres nationwide. He added that this edition of the biennial convention, organised by the Public Universities Health Council of Malaysia, is jointly hosted by the UniSZA Student Health Centre and UMT Health Centre. 'MUNCH 2025, themed 'Empowering Healthy Community: The Future of Health Promotion', focuses on efforts to strengthen the capacity of health professionals, provide a space to present research results, raise awareness of disease prevention and create a collaboration platform between universities, researchers and the health industry. 'This convention is seen as positive effort by the public universities to boost health knowledge and awareness, thus contributing to community well-being - starting with the university population itself. The joint organisation by UMT and UniSZA also proves the ability of public universities to work together in promoting a healthy lifestyle,' he said. Also present were UMT vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Zamri Ibrahim and UniSZA vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Fadzli Adam. — Bernama

Fire rips through row of shops in Kuala Nerus, wipes out traditional medicine trader's lifelong business
KUALA NERUS, Aug 10 — A trader in Batu Enam here suffered losses of over RM200,000 when the traditional medicine and homoeopathy shop he had operated for 31 years was destroyed in a fire last night. Lukman Mamad, 67, said the blaze destroyed all the medicines and treatment equipment in his rented premises. 'Yesterday, I closed the shop at about 6 pm and went home to Losong in Kuala Terengganu. At 11 pm, while attending a meeting with friends, my son called to inform me that the shop was on fire. 'I rushed to Batu Enam and saw the flames raging. There were also loud explosions because the premises next to my shop were a self-service laundromat with many gas cylinders,' he told reporters at the scene. Lukman said the laundromat operator, who owns the shop building, lives in Kuala Lumpur. He said 28 officers and personnel from the Kuala Nerus, Kuala Terengganu and Jalan Kota fire and rescue stations, as well as the Sri Nerus Volunteer Fire Station, were immediately dispatched to the scene. 'The fire involved three rows of semi-permanent shop lots. A food shop was 50 per cent destroyed, while a self-service laundromat and a traditional medicine store were 70 per cent destroyed. 'The incident also affected a house located behind the shop building, which suffered 50 per cent damage. As the shop and house structures were semi-permanent with old wooden upper floors, the fire spread rapidly,' he said. Azmi added that the blaze was brought under control within 45 minutes, and the cause of the fire, along with the total losses, are still under investigation. — Bernama

JPJ to take further measures against bus operator in UPSI bus crash
KUALA NERUS, July 19 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is detailing additional measures to be taken against the express bus operator involved in last month's accident, which claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students.. Its director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said this follows the initial report of the Special Task Force on the tragedy, which was released by the Transport Ministry yesterday. 'We are currently finalising the details, and have already taken action with the Land Public Transport Commission (Spad) by revoking the bus company's permit. There will be several more measures to come. 'Meanwhile, action against the bus driver is currently being handled by the court, so JPJ is not interfering at this stage. If a fatal accident involves a driver, action will be taken by the police (PDRM) and the court,' he told reporters, after officiating the state-level 2025 MyLesen B2 presentation ceremony, which involved 968 participants. Aedy Fadly said that, based on the initial report, the issue needs to be addressed comprehensively, with actions taken not only by JPJ or the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) but also by other relevant agencies, to enhance the road safety system in the country. It was reported that the initial findings revealed that the bus was travelling at twice the permitted speed limit, which was one of the causes of the accident. The report also highlighted systemic weaknesses in industry governance, regulatory compliance, and the effectiveness of enforcement by both the operator and regulatory agencies. On June 9, the nation was shocked by a tragic accident involving a bus carrying 42 UPSI students, travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to Tanjung Malim, Perak, along the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding in Gerik, which claimed 15 lives. Meanwhile, Aedy Fadly said that, since July 1, the JPJ has issued 1,274 compound notices under the special operation on seat belts against drivers and passengers of express buses, tour buses, and goods vehicles. He said that, out of the total, 1,000 notices were issued to passengers for not wearing seat belts, 262 notices to drivers for the same offence, and 12 notices to express buses that failed to install seat belts. 'For passengers, 878 notices were issued to express bus passengers, 107 to tour bus passengers, and 15 to passengers or drivers of goods vehicles. 'For drivers, 33 notices were issued to express bus drivers, 24 to tour bus drivers, and 205 to goods vehicle drivers,' he said. — Bernama

Terengganu FC tackles new era with privatisation, eyes corporate figure for CEO role
KUALA NERUS, July 1 — Terengganu FC (TFC) will be led by a corporate figure as chief executive officer (CEO) this season. Terengganu Football Association (PBSNT) chairman Hishamuddin Abdul Karim said the state FA has compiled a shortlist of several suitable candidates to lead the club, in line with the full privatisation plan for the club to move towards professional management. He said the final selection is underway and a closed interview would be conducted next week to select the most qualified and credible candidate to lead the club to greater heights. 'This time we will bring in a corporate figure to manage TFC. We need to fully embrace privatisation for the development of the club. 'We will announce the person as soon as possible, within this month after interviews and approval from the board of directors,' he said when met at the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Terengganu Football Sdn Bhd (TFCSB) and the Terengganu Incorporated Group (Trg Inc) here today. At the ceremony, Trg Inc, represented by Chief Executive Officer Datuk Burhanuddin Hilmi Mohamed, handed over a sponsorship worth RM1.65 million to support TFC in the upcoming 2025/26 Malaysia League season. Burhanuddin said the sponsorship in the form of money and services represents a RM150,000 increase from the previous season. 'We believe that the strength of a football team does not solely depend on performance on the field, but also requires corporate backing, professional management and comprehensive community involvement.
