Gareth Southgate REJECTED for Poland job as chief reveals reason why
Former England manager Gareth Southgate has been turned away in his bid to return to international football management – with Poland rejecting his offer to become their new head coach. Southgate led the Three Lions to two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final during his eight years at the helm, stepping down last summer after Euro 2024 final heartbreak against Spain. The 54-year-old insisted last year he was in 'no rush' to return to management but Polish daily newspaper Przeglad Sportowy this week claimed Southgate submitted an application to take the reins at Poland. In an interview with the same publication, the president of the Polish Football Association, Cezary Kulesza, has confirmed the former defender was interested in the role. But with 'no guarantee of success' in employing a foreign coach, Southgate's application was rejected. 'We have received an offer to hire him, but we must remember one basic thing: no foreign coach will give us a guarantee that we will qualify for the World Cup,' Kulesza said. 'If he gave us such a guarantee, I would hire him immediately.' Kulesza pointed to the example of Fernando Santos' recent reign in charge as Poland boss to support his reasoning for not considering Southgate. Santos managed his home country Portugal for eight years following a stellar career at club level across Europe. But his disastrous spell in charge of Poland lasted less than 10 months, criticised for poor performances and not attending Polish league matches. 'Fernando Santos is a perfect example,' Kulesza said. 'A successful coach, a big name, everyone applauded, and the verification was surprising and painful for all of us.' Poland are instead hoping to appoint Maciej Skorża. The experienced coach is in charge of Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds who are currently competing in the Club World Cup in the United States. Poland are looking for a new head coach after the sudden resignation of Michal Probierz last week. His decision came after Robert Lewandowski, the country's record goalscorer, said he would not play for his country while Probierz is in charge. More Trending Southgate meanwhile was briefly linked with the Manchester United job last year but indicated last October he would take at least a year out of the game. 'I won't coach in the next year for sure, I'm certain of that,' Southgate said in October. 'I need to give myself time to make good decisions. When you come out of a really big role you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time. 'I'm enjoying my life, so there's no rush. I'm fortunate that there are lots of opportunities presenting themselves.' Gareth Southgate rejected for new job as chief confirms ex-England boss snub
Gareth Southgate recently offered to become the new manager of Poland in what would've been his first coaching role since resigning as England boss in July 2024 Gareth Southgate has missed out on becoming Poland's new manager, the president of their FA has confirmed. Southgate, 54, has been out work since he resigned as England boss in July 2024, two days after the Three Lions agonisingly lost the final of the European Championship to Spain. The ex-England manager has been focussing on ventures outside of football, leading to suggestions that he won't ever return to the sport. But in a shock development, Southgate last week expressed his interest in ending his year-long absence by taking over a fractured Poland side in the wake of boss Michal Probierz's explosive departure. Probierz made the unpopular decision to strip star player Robert Lewandowski of the captaincy, dividing his nation ahead of a damaging 2-1 defeat to Finland in World Cup qualifying. Barcelona striker Lewandowski subsequently announced that he'd longer play for Poland under Probierz, who stepped down amid intense backlash after two years of underwhelming results and performances. Southgate's representatives then contacted the Polish FA (PZPN) to signal that the 54-year-old would be interested. But PZPN president Cezary Kulesza has now confirmed that he won't get the job. "We received an offer of his employment," Kulesza revealed to Przeglad Sportowy. "But we must remember the basic issue: no foreign coach will give us a guarantee that we will advance to the world championship. If he gave us such a guarantee, I would hire him right away." Kulesza, who's set to appoint his fourth manager in as many years as president, used the 'perfect example' of former Portugal boss Fernando Santos to explain why Southgate isn't in his thinking. Santos was appointed Poland manager in January 2023 but only lasted nine torrid months. "Fernando Santos is a perfect example," Kulesza went on. "Coach with success, big name, everyone applauded, and the verification was surprising and painful for all of us." Instead, Poland want to appoint Maciej Skorza. The experienced Pole is currently managing Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds at the Club World Cup and Kulesza has been in the United States to hold talks. Should Poland have appointed Gareth Southgate? Have your say in the comments section. "If I had to assess, the chances are 50-50," he said of Skorza. "Our talks were very specific. The position of national team coach is probably the dream of every coach in Poland." As for Southgate, he was heavily linked with Manchester United in 2024. However, the departure of ex-England ally Dan Ashworth from Old Trafford means that it's unlikely he'd succeed Ruben Amorim if he were to be sacked or quit in the new season. In December, Southgate hinted that his next role could be outside of football or sport altogether. "I've been 37 years a player and coach, and I'm not against the next period of my life being totally different," he told the BBC. "When you've had one of the biggest jobs, how do you follow that up?"

‘Ida' and ‘Corpus Christi' Stars Unite for ‘The Time That Never Came' as Dystopian Melodrama Debuts First Look, Locks a Private View as Co-Producer (EXCLUSIVE)
Agata Kulesza ('Ida') and Bartosz Bielenia ('Corpus Christi') will brace for 'The Time That Never Came.' The dystopian melodrama, set to premiere in 2026, will focus on a couple in a world obsessed with youth. Sara (Kulesza) chose to age naturally while Oskar, her partner, took an anti-aging treatment. Years later, when they reunite — divided by time but bound by the past — Sara begins a journey to reclaim lost love, confront buried emotions and find freedom. As they travel together to the City of Youth, unexpected events begin to shift her plans. Kulesza, also known for 'Green Border,' told Variety: 'I truly hope we can create a universal story, one that invites reflection on where older people stand in today's world and whether we're placing far too much value on youth, which is, from the outset, a race we're all destined to lose. I understand that when you're young, you don't think about growing old — but aging comes for all of us.' The film is directed by Julia Rogowska, who is making her feature debut. 'I'm genuinely interested in what young people think about and how they perceive the world. This story, and the world Julia created in her imagination, moved me immediately,' added Kulesza. 'I think we connected through that sensitivity and through the things that trouble us in the world. I'm at a stage in life that feels like a transition. It pains me that aging has become taboo, and that older people are pushed aside. We talk about them only in terms of age, but no one asks what that person has meant to the world or what they've done. They become nothing more than a number.' According to Rogowska, 'The Time That Never Came' was born from conversations about 'where our collective obsession with youth comes from and what the fear of aging silently takes away from us.' 'Together with screenwriter Małgorzata Piłacińska, we explored what we are willing to sacrifice, or even give up entirely, out of that fear. At its core, this is also a love story: one shaped by time, memory and longing. I was drawn to the emotional tension of melodrama: the idea that even after years apart, two people can still carry the weight of what was lost, and the hope of what might still be reclaimed.' She called Sara 'the kind of heroine we need today.' 'We've been told that significant change is the domain of the young, but Sara defies that notion,' Rogowska said. 'She challenges how we think not only about aging, but also about freedom.' Also featuring Dobromir Dymecki as Oskar and Michalina Łabacz, 'The Time That Never Came' is produced by Krystyna Kantor for Shipsboy (Poland). Joanna Szymańska co-produces, as well as Dries Phlypo for A Private View (Belgium). Next Film handles Polish distribution. 'As a company focused on international co-productions, we've always looked for stories that connect across cultures, but 'The Time That Never Came' is our first majority feature. Sara's journey struck us as emotionally resonant, artistically ambitious, and deeply relevant to the world we live in. This is the kind of bold, genre-crossing cinema we believe audiences are looking for,' said Kantor. Previously, A Private View collaborated with Shipsboy on 'Dust,' directed by Anke Blondé. 'We got to know Shipsboy as a reliable, committed, and strong partner. We're excited to now switch roles and stand behind 'The Time That Never Came' as co-producer, supporting this remarkable story,' noted Phlypo. 'The film offers a critical perspective on beauty ideals and aging while unfolding a captivating and universal love story. From the very beginning, we were drawn to the originality and distinct character of this project, a narrative in which love, despite every obstacle and temptation, always finds its way back to the surface,' he said. 'It's about the strength it takes to let go, the consequences of the choices we make and the search for freedom and self-worth.'
