Gareth Southgate REJECTED for Poland job as chief reveals reason why
Former England manager Gareth Southgate has been turned away in his bid to return to international football management – with Poland rejecting his offer to become their new head coach.
Southgate led the Three Lions to two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final during his eight years at the helm, stepping down last summer after Euro 2024 final heartbreak against Spain.
The 54-year-old insisted last year he was in 'no rush' to return to management but Polish daily newspaper Przeglad Sportowy this week claimed Southgate submitted an application to take the reins at Poland.
In an interview with the same publication, the president of the Polish Football Association, Cezary Kulesza, has confirmed the former defender was interested in the role. But with 'no guarantee of success' in employing a foreign coach, Southgate's application was rejected.
'We have received an offer to hire him, but we must remember one basic thing: no foreign coach will give us a guarantee that we will qualify for the World Cup,' Kulesza said.
'If he gave us such a guarantee, I would hire him immediately.'
Kulesza pointed to the example of Fernando Santos' recent reign in charge as Poland boss to support his reasoning for not considering Southgate.
Santos managed his home country Portugal for eight years following a stellar career at club level across Europe. But his disastrous spell in charge of Poland lasted less than 10 months, criticised for poor performances and not attending Polish league matches.
'Fernando Santos is a perfect example,' Kulesza said. 'A successful coach, a big name, everyone applauded, and the verification was surprising and painful for all of us.'
Poland are instead hoping to appoint Maciej Skorża. The experienced coach is in charge of Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds who are currently competing in the Club World Cup in the United States.
Poland are looking for a new head coach after the sudden resignation of Michal Probierz last week.
His decision came after Robert Lewandowski, the country's record goalscorer, said he would not play for his country while Probierz is in charge. More Trending
Southgate meanwhile was briefly linked with the Manchester United job last year but indicated last October he would take at least a year out of the game.
'I won't coach in the next year for sure, I'm certain of that,' Southgate said in October.
'I need to give myself time to make good decisions. When you come out of a really big role you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time.
'I'm enjoying my life, so there's no rush. I'm fortunate that there are lots of opportunities presenting themselves.'

This new-look competition probably does not view City as the favourites as they might have been in the recent past and that is why Guardiola is channelling his positive thought and energy on getting them back there. That has been delivered in team talks and also with nearly £300m spent in 2025 for a new-look City line-up with the likes of Kyle Walker and Jack Grealish likely to follow Kevin de Bruyne out of the exit door. City's Brazil winger Savinho, 21, who is set to face Abu Dhabi side Al Ain in their second game in the US in Atlanta in the early hours of Monday in UK time, said: 'This is very much the new season for us. Last season is over, we can't change anything about that now. We're completely focused on this one. We've got to learn from the mistakes we made last season and also forget about it a bit. 'I'm really happy that we were able to bring in four such quality reinforcements. They're training really well and integrating into a group that is really settled so that is good to see. I'm looking forward to getting onto the pitch with them.' Savinho was a bright spot in City's season as the 21-year-old joined in 2024 for £30m and his pace, goals and energy really put him on the map. The season overall was a frustrating one for City but Savinho says it was a big learning curve for him despite the setbacks. Savinho said: 'I certainly learnt a lot and I felt like I evolved a lot as the season went on. That's thanks to Pep, my team mates and the coaches as well. But I'm looking to improve even more this season. To get more goals, more assists and be able to help the team. 'I'm so happy here. We put in some marvellous work and marvellous preparation. I'm really happy to be here and my team mates, the coaches are really excited about the tournament. We put in the hard yards, we've prepared well and we're really ready for tomorrow's game.' Nico Gonzalez was one of the big January signings as he joined for £50m and was seen as a vital arrival to help plug the gap left by Rodri who missed virtually all the season with a cruciate knee ligament injury. That was a huge blow and issue for City's season but Rodri is coming back and Gonzalez says he is learning from the Spain midfielder. He said: 'He has been back a couple of months, he is an amazing player and really good in everything that can be good in a midfielder. 'I am trying to learn the most I can and I think I am starting to watch him at his best level. I am seeing things that I haven't seen in a lot of midfielders.' Napoli open talks to sign another Man Utd star after Jadon Sancho agreement
Napoli are interested in signing another Manchester United star having enquired into a deal for Rasmus Hojlund. After a woeful second season in Manchester where he managed just four goals in 32 Premier League appearances, United are prepared to listen to offers for the Denmark international and make an upgrade up front ahead of the new campaign. Inter Milan have held talks with their Premier League counterparts in recent weeks over a move to bring the former Atalanta star back to Italy. The Nerazzurri are keen on a loan deal with an option to buy for €45million (£38m) but United are looking for a permanent arrangement. The temperature made it very difficult."
