New thalassaemia ward opened at Ludhiana civil hospital
A state-of-the-art thalassemia ward was recently inaugurated at Lord Mahavir Civil Hospital in Ludhiana by Punjab health and family welfare minister Dr Balbir Singh. The new facility, supported by the Philanthropy Club, aims to provide comprehensive care—including regular blood transfusions, specialised counselling, and modern treatment—to hundreds of patients from Ludhiana and surrounding areas. (HT Photo) On the occasion, the health minister stated that in many countries thalassaemia has been completely eradicated, and Punjab is moving towards the same goal. Under this mission, bone marrow transplant services have been initiated with funds provided by Coal India, and with the collaboration of CMC, the Punjab government is conducting free surgeries for thalassaemia patients. The minister emphasised that this ward is not just a medical facility but a symbol of hope, compassion, and progress. No child or family should be deprived of treatment due to financial or social barriers — this is a priority for the government. The Punjab government will continue to invest in modern healthcare infrastructure, expert medical teams, and patient support services to ensure the best possible outcomes. The minister also appealed to people to join the 'Har Shukarvaar Dengue Te Vaar' campaign and praised the dedicated contributions of 20,000 Asha workers and nursing students who are actively working across the state to control vector-borne diseases. On this occasion, MLAs Ashok Prashar Pappi,Kulwant Singh Sidhu, SDM Jasleen Kaur Bhular, civil surgeon Dr Ramandeep Kaur, along with Dicky Chabbra, Vimmy Bajaj, Anu Gupta, Simrat Kathuria, Jazz Bhogal, and Nisha Sharma were present.

Ludh jails prep for Rakhi with sweets, handicrafts
Ludhiana: Authorities of Ludhiana Central Jail, Borstal Jail, and Women Jail have made special arrangements for Rakhi celebrations for inmates on Saturday. They have provided sweets and rakhis for inmates and their visitors. Additionally, the Ludhiana Women Jail is hosting an exhibition outside its premises, where jail staff will sell rakhis and other handicrafts made by the women inmates. All three facilities will facilitate meetings between inmates and their siblings for rakhi between 9am and 5pm. Superintendent, Ludhiana Central Jail, Kulwant Singh Sidhu said, "Sitting arrangements have been made in the 'dyodhi area' of the jail. Sisters of inmates will tie rakhi here and later come for meeting in the 'mulakaat ghar'. The jail authority has also provided sweets at a no-profit-no-loss rate at the canteen of the central jail. The families are not allowed to bring sweets from home. Those who wish to purchase sweets can get them from the jail canteen. " The official added that 60% of the money collected from sales will be allocated to the Punjab Prison Development Board (PPDB), while 40% will be distributed to inmates who crafted the items. Borstal jail superintendent Gupreet Singh confirmed that seating arrangements for siblings had been made in the 'dyodhi area', where rakhi will be celebrated between 9am and 5pm.
