Anil Kumble Hails Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy As Test Showcase: 'Great Advert...'
Last Updated: Anil Kumble praised the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy as a brilliant showcase for Test cricket despite India's 22-run loss at Lord's. India trails 1-2 but has shown resilience. Despite India's 22-run loss at Lord's, former India captain Anil Kumble hailed the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy as a brilliant showcase for Tests, with India now trailing 1-2 in the five-match series. India made an impressive comeback in the second Test after a five-wicket defeat in the series opener at Leeds. With a composed bowling performance and improved fielding, the visitors bowled England out for 271 on the final day to secure a memorable victory with more than a session to spare. However, the hosts clinched a thrilling 22-run win on the final day of the third Test at Lord's, taking a 2-1 lead in the five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy on Monday. 'This is a great advertisement for Test cricket. All three Tests have gone down to the wire, and both teams have fought brilliantly. Yes, the scoreline says 2-1 to England, but if you look at session-wise performances, it's been even. India should feel confident heading into the next two Tests. They've already bounced back from a loss in the first Test. 'This match came down to fine margins—like Pant's run-out before lunch, the extras, and perhaps letting Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse score freely. Those key moments—India will need to grab them in the next game if they want to level the series," Kumble said on JioHostar. The loss at Lord's is India's fourth narrowest defeat in Tests in terms of runs. Kumble, who was part of India's narrowest defeat when they lost by 12 runs against Pakistan in Chennai in 1999, said he was reminded of that 12-run loss. 'I was just reminded of one Test match where I lost by 12 runs against Pakistan in Chennai. It was a similar kind of dismissal. Just 22 runs. Jadeja left stranded—I mean, he planned to get India this close to winning. But England just stuck to their task. I guess the previous over from Jofra Archer certainly rattled Siraj. 'It's not like he was looking to take the bowler on, but the silly point coming in added pressure. Thought that was a great chance to pull off a historic win. But that's what it should be for India—despite losing by 22 runs, there are a lot of positives," he added. 'Bumrah Should Play Both Tests': Former India Cricketer Sends Warning To Team India
Last Updated: Anil Kumble has requested Indian team management to push Jasprit Bumrah to play the next two Tests against England. Former India cricketer Anil Kumble has said that if he were a part of the Indian team management, he would push ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah to play the next two Tests against England at Old Trafford and Kennington Oval, with the hosts just one win away from winning the five-match series. Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and the fragile tail brought India back from the brink but fell short in the face of England skipper Ben Stokes' resolve, going down by 22 runs in the fluctuating third Test at Lord's. As India suffered a loss in the third Test at Lord's, Kumble requested head coach Gautam Gambhir to push Bumrah to play at Old Trafford, warning that his absence would make India's loss a certainty. 'I would certainly, if I'm a part of that group, I would push Bumrah to play the next game because that's crucial. If he doesn't play and then you lose the Test, that's it. The series is done and dusted," Kumble said while speaking on JioHotstar. 'I think Bumrah should play both the Tests. I know he said, I'm only going to play three. We have a long break after this. You don't need to play the home series. You can take a break if you want," Kumble added. The fourth Test will begin at Old Trafford on July 23, with a week-long break from now on. India, as of now, have opted to remain tight-lipped on their plans around Bumrah. In nine matches at Old Trafford between India and England, five ended in a draw, while the remaining four turned out in England's favour. view comments First Published: July 15, 2025, 13:18 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. India Given Blunt Advice: 'Push Jasprit Bumrah To Play; If He Doesn't, Then...'
Last Updated: There's uncertainty over Jasprit Bumrah's participation in the next Test given he's expected to play in only three matches of the England tour. With India losing the third Test at Lord's, Anil Kumble has advised the team to avoid resting their pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah if they want to avoid losing the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Bumrah has two five-wicket hauls in as many Tests of the ongoing series which India trail 1-2 after a close defeat on Monday. The 31-year-old, expected to play in three of the five Tests of England tour, has already played in two games which has left the team management with a big headache: Should Bumrah play or be rested for the 4th Test? Kumble said if he were part of the Indian team management, Bumrah would play at Old Trafford – the venue of third Test. 'I would certainly, if I'm part of that group, push Bumrah to play the next game," Kumble told JioHotstar after the match. 'That's crucial. If he doesn't play and then we lose the Test, that's it – the series is done and dusted." Kumble pointed out the eight-day gap between the third and fourth Test which as long enough for Bumrah to rest and recover. 'I think Bumrah should play both the remaining Tests. I know he's said he's going to play only three, but there's a long break after this. He doesn't have to play the home series – he can take a break if needed. But I believe he should be out there for the next two," he said. The right-arm, widely considered as the best fast bowler in the world currently, has a history of injuries which have pushed him to the sidelines for significant periods. The latest setback came towards the end of India's Australia tour earlier this year in January when Bumrah hurt his back and missed nearly two months of cricket including the Champions Trophy. Bumrah had played in all five Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and given his fitness concerns, it was decided that he will only play in three Tests of the England tour. view comments First Published: July 16, 2025, 13:46 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. IND vs ENG, 4th Test Playing 11: Will Jasprit Bumrah sit out crucial Old Trafford Test? India face conundrum
India vs England 4th Test Playing 11: Jasprit Bumrah's workload management has been as much a conversation in India's ongoing Test series in England as the series itself. Their decision to let Bumrah sit out the second Test was met with a flurry of criticism but then incidentally, that has ended up being the only match India has won thus far. At the end of that Test at Edgbaston, Shubman Gill replied with a simple 'Definitely' when he was asked if Bumrah will play the next Test at Lord's. However, after the end of the Lord's Test, which India lost despite a lengthy and dogged resistance of more than 50 overs from their lower order including Bumrah, Gill was more circumspect when asked the same question. 'You'll get to know soon,' is what he said. Former India bowlers Irfan Pathan and Anil Kumble are both clear that Bumrah simply has to play the fourth Test at Old Trafford, a ground where the 31-year-old has never played before. The five-match series could be decided there with India trailing 2-1. Kumble, in fact, feels that Bumrah should just play both remaining Test matches. 'I would certainly, if I'm part of that group, push Bumrah to play the next game,' Kumble told JioHotstar after the third Test. 'That's crucial. If he doesn't play and then we lose the Test, that's it—the series is done and dusted. I think Bumrah should play both the remaining Tests. I know he's said he's going to play only three, but there's a long break after this. He doesn't have to play the home series—he can take a break if needed. But I believe he should be out there for the next two.' Pathan also felt that resting Bumrah again would mean making yet another change to the bowling lineup. 'This is the biggest five-match series that you would play abroad in this World Test Championship cycle, and in such a crunch situation, changing too much isn't ideal—neither for the management nor for the fellow bowlers. In conditions like these, Bumrah's presence adds a lot of value,' he added. India head coach Gautam Gambhir had been clear before the start of the series that Bumrah will only play three matches and reiterated the same after India lost the first Test at Headingley. 'Haven't decided which two matches Bumrah will play but he will play total of three. We need to manage his workload. Scoreline doesn't change that… he will play three Tests only,' Gambhir had said.

IND vs ENG 3rd Test: 'He did enough' - Former India captain makes bold statement on batter's future after 'brain fade' moment
Brydon Carse of England celebrates dismissing Karun Nair of India during Day Four of the 3rd Rothesay Test Match between England and India at Lord's Cricket Ground (Photo by) Former India captain Anil Kumble believes India should avoid making too many changes for the fourth Test against England in Manchester. The veteran also backed India No 3 Karun Nair to keep his place in the team despite India's 22-run loss at Lord's. With the loss at Lord's, England now lead the five-match series 2-1, with the next Test starting on July 23. Asked if changes were needed and whether Nair should stay in the XI, Kumble said, " I don't want to make too many changes because I think India have played a fantastic game. Yes, they lost by 22 runs. Unless injuries, we don't know about Rishabh Pant." Backing the 33-year-old for the upcoming Test, Kumble added, " He certainly keeps his place. He did enough in the first innings. In the second innings, it was probably a brain fade, but he was batting well. That partnership was crucial ." Kumble referred to Nair's 61-run partnership with KL Rahul in the first innings, which helped protect captain Shubman Gill from facing the new ball early. India vs England: India fall short at Lord's, England lead series 2-1 "If he had gotten out early, then maybe Shubman Gill exposed slightly earlier with the new ball. We know that the first 20 or 25 overs were crucial. I think he will still keep his place. He was unfortunate that he got out. It was a brilliant catch by Joe Root. Probably give him one more opportunity," Kumble said on Star Sports' Follow the Blues, . Nair scored 40 runs in the first innings before being caught by Joe Root off Ben Stokes. In the second innings, he made 14 and was trapped lbw by Brydon Carse. Kumble also praised Ravindra Jadeja's recent batting contributions, especially from the lower order. When asked if lower-order runs were India's biggest positive from Lord's, he said, "The first Test, when India lost, the contribution from the lower order was nothing in the two innings, and since then, Ravindra Jadeja has certainly stepped up with his batting. He certainly will feel confident, and the team management will also feel so much more confident that the lower order is now contributing." Poll Should India make changes to the team for the fourth Test against England? Yes, they need to change some players No, they should keep the same team Only if there are injuries Kumble noted Jadeja's ability to build partnerships with both top and lower-order players. " He has been the sole sort of leader in that middle order to hold the innings, not just with a recognized batter, and putting together a partnership, but also ensuring that the lower order starts contributing along with him, and those partnerships that he has had, even in the first innings with Nitish Kumar Reddy, second innings with him, and of course, with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj," he said. Jadeja scored 72 and 61* in the two innings at Lord's, guiding India from a precarious position of 82/7 in the second innings. The veteran's marathon stand however, went up in vain with the 'unlucky' wicket of Mohammed Siraj at the hands of spinner Shoaib Bashir, falling 22 runs short of what would have been an iconic win.
