NDTV Exclusive: "I Am Heartbroken," Aanand L Rai Slams AI-Powered Climax In Raanjhanaa's Re-Released Version
New Delhi: Aanand L Rai's Raanjhanaa is re-releasing in theatres on August 1, 2025. Instead of expressing joy, the filmmaker is disappointed as the studio Eros International has incorporated a new ending powered by Artificial Intelligence, as the marketing posters of the re-release suggest. In an exclusive conversation with NDTV, the director spoke about how Raanjhanaa never needed another climax, and also questioned Eros International's decision. What's Happening Aanand L Rai addressed the ongoing buzz about the 'AI-powered' climax in Raanjhanaa, which is re-releasing on August 1, 2025. The director told NDTV, " Raanjhanaa didn't need a new climax. It had heart and honesty. It became a cult film because people connected to it with its flaws and imperfections. To see its ending altered without a word of discussion is a gross violation not just of the film, but of the trust of the fans who've carried the film in their hearts for 12 years." He added, "Eros's actions open a dangerous door. They raise urgent legal and ethical questions about the impact of decisions like this on the moral rights of creators. Even worse is their apparent decision to alter the actors' contributions without their consent! How can they digitally manipulate an actor's input almost a decade after a film's release? This strips away their agency and raises serious concerns under personality and image rights. If this goes unquestioned, what stops anyone from "updating" any film, performance, or legacy to suit short-term profiteering?" "I'm heartbroken that this is the future we're heading toward, where intent and authorship are disposable. All I can do is dissociate myself from such a reckless and dystopian experiment," concluded Aanand L Rai. Aanand L Rai's Initial Reaction To The AI-Generated Climax Yesterday, in conversation with SCREEN, Aanand L Rai had expressed his disappointment at how the studio Eros International did not consult him before taking this step. He said, "I got to know through a social media announcement a couple of days ago. People have already been messaging me asking me why that ending is being changed. I just can't wrap my head around this." As the studio did not address his concerns, Aanand L Rai now plans to write a letter to them to remove his name from the film with an AI-generated climax. "I don't get it, how can they do this? It's an ending people have loved! If not the filmmaker, at least listen to the audience. What is a happy ending? It's a tragedy, that's an emotion. How can you meddle with emotions? The voice of the film lies in that ending," said the director. Raanjhanaa's Original Ending The 'happy ending' context comes in because in the original film, Kundan (Dhanush) dies. The AI-generated climax is supposed to provide a kind of ending where Kundan survives. Rewinding to the Raanjhanaa climax in 2013, Dhanush's character Kundan dies after getting shot. The incident unfolds at a public rally planned by the establishment. Zoya (Sonam Kapoor), who plays his love interest, is not oblivious to the conspiracy that has been sketched out to ensure Kundan's death. Kundan is also aware of it, but his love for Zoya stops him from making it obvious. In A Nutshell Aanand L Rai has strongly reacted to Eros International's decision to add an AI-generated ending in Raanjhanaa, which will be re-released on August 1, 2025. He expressed his disappointment and said all he can do is dissociate himself from it.

UP Woman's Detailed Suicide Note On Arm, Leg, Stomach Over Dowry Harassment
New Delhi: A 28-year-old woman, allegedly facing harassment for dowry by her in-laws, died by suicide in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat earlier this week, leaving a suicide note written on her body. The incident took place on Tuesday night when the woman, identified as Manisha, consumed poison. The woman, in the note written on her arm, legs, and stomach with a pen, expressed the pain she was going through due to the harassment by her husband, Kundan, and his family. "Kundan and his family are responsible for my death," it said in Hindi. Manisha also made a video blaming her in-laws for her death. The clip accessed by the police showed Manisha crying and narrating how her husband, his mother, father, and brother, constantly harassed her over dowry. According to her, they repeatedly asked her for a car and a huge amount of cash, despite her family spending Rs 20 lakh for the wedding and already having given a Bullet motorcycle as dowry. She further claimed that her in-laws and husband beat her occasionally, and even forced her to undergo an abortion. When she did not give in to the dowry demands, her in-laws allegedly attempted to kill her with electrocution, she claimed. Officials said that Manisha got married in 2023 to Kundan, a resident of Noida. A few months after the marriage, her in-laws started pressuring her for dowry. Due to the increasing mental torture, the woman went to her maternal home in July 2024. Four days before her death, Manisha's family began discussing getting her divorced from her husband. However, she had said she would not sign the divorce papers until her in-laws returned the dowry items, officials said.

Aanand L Rai slams Eros' decision to re-release Raanjhanaa in theatres with ‘AI-powered climax', says they are ‘butchering the film'
Aanand L Rai's 2013 romantic drama Raanjhanaa has a loyal fan base, despite its polarizing ending. At the end of the film, Dhanush's character Kundan dies after getting shot at a public rally orchestrated by the establishment. Sonam Kapoor, who plays his love interest Zoya, is aware of the conspiracy. So does Kundan, but he obliges out of love for Zoya. Now, 12 years later, Raanjhanaa is re-releasing in cinemas on August 1. But there's a twist — there's 'a new ending powered by Artificial Intelligence,' as marketing posters of the re-release claim. However, Aanand L Rai, who not only helmed but also co-produced the film under his banner Color Yellow Productions, wasn't consulted by the studio Eros International for this decision. 'I got to know through social media announcement a couple of days ago. People have already been messaging me asking me why that ending is being changed. I just can't wrap my head around this,' Rai tells SCREEN exclusively. He reached out to Eros International and expressed his objection, but when they didn't see reason, he now plans to write to them, asking them to disassociate his name from the 'AI-altered film.' 'I don't get it, how can they do this? It's an ending people have loved! If not the filmmaker, at least listen to the audience,' says Rai. The AI-created climax is supposed to be an alternate, 'happy' ending, where Kundan survives. 'What is a happy ending? It's a tragedy, that's an emotion. How can you meddle with emotions? The voice of the film lies in that ending,' adds Rai. He also believes this move sets a dangerous, unfair precedent for filmmakers. 'The only good thing that's come out of this is I've learnt my lesson. I've to be very careful while signing the dotted line. I'm dealing with this, but other filmmakers should learn from this. A studio doesn't care about the story. Just to earn a few crores, they're tampering with a writer, director, and actor's creation,' says Rai. Eros International has sold the new print to Upswing Entertainment, a distributor in Tamil Nadu. 'Maybe they're trying to test waters in Tamil Nadu first. They've sold it to a distributor there and must've earned a few crores out of that already. But if you commit a crime in Rome, it's still a crime! Even if you're releasing it in Tamil Nadu, where we don't have that much of a presence, but my actor does. And I'm responsible for what happens to his image there with my film,' argues Rai. Rai feels Eros International doesn't realize the long-term impact of a business move they've made for short-term gain. 'They'll realize it soon, when the actors and the audience will get back to them. No actors would want to work with them now. Maybe they don't want to work with actors anymore. They plan to make films with AI only,' says Rai. The filmmaker clarifies he's not against the technology, but against the misuse of it. He himself is harnessing the technology to create better VFX for his next film, Tere Ishq Mein, starring Dhanush and Kriti Sanon. But he doesn't appreciate the gross misappropriation of his craft using the technology just because the studio has the legal, financial, and technological muscle to do so. Also Read — Aanand L Rai on Dhanush-starrer Tere Ishq Mein: 'It is from the world of Raanjhanaa, but…' 'They say, AI is the future. Everybody knows that. But then use it for the future or for the present. Don't use it to distort the past! If you buy a portrait by an artist, you can add moustache to it, if you like. But you definitely can't resell that for commercial gain. Next thing we know, they may change the climax of Sholay (1975) by keeping both Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra) alive,' says Rai. SCREEN reached out to Eros International for a response, but the studio hasn't responded till the time this story was published.
