Villagers donate land for hostel

Published on: Sunday, August 10, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 10, 2025 By: Clarence Dol Text Size: Dr. Joachim (3rd right) listens to a briefing from Rudi while visiting the Cahaya Kasih Dormitory. About 20 students who lack accommodation in a school here will soon have a place to stay with the completion of the Cahaya Kasih Dormitory in the near future thanks to land donated by villagers here. Deputy Chief Minister II and State Assemblyman (ADUN) Kundasang, Datuk Seri Dr. Joachim Gunsalam inspected the Cahaya Kasih Dormitory which is still not fully completed in Kg Malinsau Darat, here. Advertisement The visit was to monitor the progress of the community dormitory project and identify the form of contribution that can be given by the Government or the Kundasang Assemblyman's Office. 'We will see what needs to be contributed, whether from the Government or specifically through the Kundasang Assemblyman's Office. Later we will discuss what other assistance can be given to them,' he said. The hostel was built using funds from various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) including the Sabah Churches Council. The initiative was initiated by the residents of Kampung Malinsau Darat together with Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sri Gabungan to help students who live far away to continue their education. The project, worth about RM230,000, also received a land donation donated by local residents who were concerned about the difficulties parents have in sending their children to school due to the long distance. Advertisement The project chairman, Rudi Burain, who is also the Headmaster of SK Sri Gabungan, thanked Dr Joachim for inspecting the needs of the hostel to expedite its preparations. 'We in this community agreed to build the hostel with the help of NGOs, especially churches throughout Sabah. So far, the construction progress has reached 90 percent, but there are still some equipment that need to be provided before it can be operational. 'With the help of Datuk Seri Dr. Joachim, we believe that this hostel can be used in the near future. The students here will not only get accommodation facilities, but also various academic and spiritual activities will be carried out,' he said. Also present during the visit were Dr. Joachim's Political Secretary, Yubidi Gompoyo; Chairman of JPKK Kampung Nasakot Malinsau Darat, Patrick Gundalam and several local leaders. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
